Good night, Paw Nation. Get home safe, and see if you can manage to relax this hard. See you tomorrow!

Sucka27, Youtube

Not a lot of information accompanies this YouTube video. "We babysat a pug and what is this," the title states/asks flatly. The video's description says only, "Are you kidding me?" No, nobody's kidding you. This is pretty much par for the course when it comes to pugs. Sure, they're pretty cute with their scrunched-up little faces, but if you're thinking about adopting one, you should first know what you're getting yourself into. See, dog breeds don't exist in nature. They've been selectively bred by humans over thousands of years to be able to perform different tasks and serve different purposes. And the reason pugs exist apparently is because there are people who really want to own a dog whose purpose is to have no nasal passages. That's human ingenuity at work! So if you really want a dog that has all the energy of a toddler, and all the breathing capacity of your grampa with a sinus infection taking a nap after Thanksgiving dinner, then a pug might be a perfect fit for you. Just watch this video before you make any decisions.

We've noticed a trend. Lately is seems like an increasing number of the more astonishing pet tricks we've been seeing on the Internet aren't home-grown. No, to a large degree, many of these impressive animal videos are Asian in origin. Now, don't get us wrong; we love the Asian countries and their rich cultures. We're not complaining about their efforts. But you guys, they're kind of making us Westerners look like chumps. Only just recently we've seen a Japanese dog who can catch with his paws, a Chinese cat who instructs a human how to open a container, and now an adorable Japanese pug conga line? We should have thought of that! That should have been ours! But no, our best answer Stateside is a cat who can't jump onto a low ledge, and a dog who tries to play fetch with a statue. Maybe we should be less concerned with laughing at our pets' failures and start training them to be viral-video champions. Step yo' game up, America! Because when we watch this excellent video, we don't see just two precious pugs dancing in a conga line; we see a missed opportunity.

Aw, we love pugs. They're so cute, the way they just sit there on their butts, paws extended and limp, like they're just waiting to be patted on their heads, with their adorable, smushed round faces...

Oh wait! Wow, scratch that! We love Pomeranians. Loooove them poms! They're so cute, the way they pop out of stuff? And then shake? TOO CUTE!

(P.S. We still love pugs.)

Let's say you have two pugs. Both are adorable. One is a tad bit older and plumper, while the other is younger, more lithe, and always ready to play.

Say you get the older, tubbier pug into his bed, where he happily sits, beaming. Then the younger, more spry little guy comes along, begging his elder to get in on the fun.

It's a tug-of-war of sorts, and we're just glad "tug" rhymes with "pug," for the purposes of this hilarious video.

There really is nothing better than sleeping next to a warm body.

Is it true that you can estimate how old a dog is in human years by multiplying its age by 7? Are certain dog breeds known to be, well, dumb or lazy? American Kennel Club spokesperson Lisa Peterson helps us debunk common dog stereotypes and gives us the truth about some of our favorite four-legged friends.

Sure, there are some dog breeds whose breathing can be problematic (see bulldogs and pugs), but also bear in mind that for all the possible aggravation, owning such a pooch can bring with it some priceless moments, just like this one. We could watch this funny snoring shar-pei video for hours.

At Paw Nation, we share equal places in our heart for every breed, of course, but there is something particularly charming about the pug.

What is it about pugs that make them so darn cute? Ugh, that face! So wide, so full of life, emotion, and expression, the pug's face can say so much with nary a sound. Happiness, sadness, boredom -- it's all there, and photographer Jim Dratfield knows it well. The celebrity pet photographer and author of "PugShots" has returned with "PugNation", a collection of delicious photos that capture pugs in all their "quirky, bug-eyed, silly splendor."

An ideal coffee table book for the dog lover in all of us, "PugNation" does not disappoint. Dratfield's photos are both artful and thoughtful without ever feeling pretentious. It's clear that he is both great at what he does and exhibits a true appreciation for his subjects. Whether the pug is swimming, costumed, or nonchalantly chillin' beachside, the photographed pooches are a sight to behold, and Dratfield's gorgeous imagery details the evidence that the pug mug is, if nothing else, worth a thousand words.

It isn't just kids who get caught in the middle of bitter custody battles.

A pair of New Jersey exes have racked up $40,000 in legal fees as they battle for permanent custody of their pet pug, Dexter, reports the New York Post. Eric Dare, a New Jersey policeman, and Doreen Houseman, a customer-service manager, headed to Salem County Family Court on Wednesday for a third round of legal arguments.

Dare and Houseman ended their thirteen year relationship and engagement in 2006. Since then, the two have been in a tug of war over six-year-old Dexter. Dare, who was originally awarded custody, claims he let Houseman share the pooch with him when they split. Houseman, who had originally sued for custody, appealed the decision, claiming that Dare had given her the dog after they broke up, reports the New York Post.

According to the New York Post, Houseman won her appeal last March, when three appeals judges disagreed with Judge John Tomasello's original ruling, which compared Dexter to a piece of furniture. The decision set a new precedent: that pets have "special subjective" and "sentimental value," which should have been considered in the initial decision.

According to court papers, the appeals process got even more heated when lawyers for the Animal Defense League and Lawyers in Defense of Animals filed paperwork urging the court create a rule "that requires consideration of the best interest of the dog."

We kind of wish there was a serious Canine Olympic Games, if only to see this as an official event: the Quadruple Synchronized Doggy Head Tilt. If our fantasy were ever to become reality, surely Minnie, Mabel, Max, and Monte here would be serious contenders for the gold.

"But Paw Nation," you're saying, "how can you rationalize this as an athletic achievement?" Like this: If curling and badminton are Olympic events, head tilting could be too. A tip for the owner: don't use the R-I-D-E word during the official contest, 'cause if the pugs break form, it's an automatic DQ.
