Oscar was the victim of a gruesome accident last year. While lounging in a maize field near his home on the island of Jersey, his back paws were sliced off by a combine harvester, the BBC reports.
Luckily, a woman riding by saw the accident and knocked on the nearby door of Oscar's owners, Kate Allan and Mike Nolan.
"It was very traumatic. I was convinced we were going to have to put him down at this point," Nolan told the BBC.
But a local vet was able to dress the wounds and treat Oscar's pain. Once the 2-year-old cat was stable, the vet suggested his owners get in touch with a veterinary surgeon in England. Two weeks later, Oscar was on a plane, the BBC reports.
When he arrived in England, Oscar was prepped for his breakthrough surgery. Veterinary surgeon Noel Fitzpatrick drilled holes into the bones of Oscar's legs, then inserted special prosthetic implants into the holes, according to ABC News.
The implant has an umbrella-like end designed to form a seal against bacteria, ABC News reports. Over time, Oscar's skin and bone will grow into the implants, fusing them together. Essentially, Oscar is now part cat and part machine, a true bionic wonder.
