Cute Pet Name: Oly (aka Lolly, Miss Pants, or Stop that!)

Location: Stone Mountain, Ga.

Age: 6 years

Dog Breed: Lab/border collie mix

Favorite Toy: She's never been a toy girl, but has one tired old bone (same one since the day her owners adopted her!) she chews for about three minutes, once a day.

Favorite Treat: "As far as I can tell, licking the leftover wasabi and soy sauce mixture off my fingers on sushi nights is her favorite treat in the universe," her owner says.

Likes: Running as fast as she can in the backyard, walks, car rides and Dog TV -- staring out the front or back doors for hours, maniacally chasing small mammals.

Dislikes: The vacuum, thunder, aggressive dogs, unauthorized squirrels, cats and humans spotted during Dog TV.

Fun Fact: She'll walk right up to you and sit up to "ask for a hug" without your having to say a word. "It pretty much demands that you cease whatever you're doing, squat down and comply!" her owner says.

Weird Quirk: He will run to his bowl or the door and then back to you and back to the bowl or door to tell you whether he needs to go out or if the bowl is empty and he needs water. He will also tap you on the arm with his paw if he wants to get under a blanket you are using or tap on a door if he wants to come in from outside or into a room where the door is closed and he can't open it.

Fun Fact: If his owners start saying, "Oh no!" like the Mr. Bill doll and keep saying it over and over he will start to howl like he's talking along with them.

Dog Breed: Border collie cross (though it is thought she might be a coyote cross). Her mom is a red border collie, and Kele was a free pup from a country litter of mixed pups. She chose us.

Favorite Toy: Kele doesn't play with conventional dog toys; her favorite thing to play with is our Standardbred horse, Mr. Eko. They will play chase whenever they get a chance.

Favorite Treat: It's a toss-up between Milk-Bone treats and the Frosted Mini-Wheats cereal I share with her at breakfast. There are always two squares saved just for her.

Likes: Kele loves to be my shadow. Wherever I go, she's right at my side. Kele loves to go exploring with me on long walks in the woods. She is a good girl, and when I am attempting to take pictures of wildlife, she will be very still and not chase them, even though I know she wants to.

Dislikes: She doesn't like strangers or visitors to our farm. It takes her awhile to warm up to people.

Weird Quirk: When you scratch her bum, she lifts her head and points her nose high in the air. You can tell she is in heaven with a good back scratch.

"After 125 years, American Kennel Club opens competitions to mutts," reports the Washington Post. Not all events of course -- your mixed-breed pooch won't be sharing the show ring during the beauty competitions, but your mutt can prove what he's made of in the skill contests.

The American Kennel Club, which has been celebrating the best of purebred canines since 1884, has relaxed its standards a bit, creating a new option for owners of mixed breed dogs called AKC Canine Partners. Paw Nation got the scoop on the new program which allows dogs, regardless of fancy pedigree (or lack thereof), to participate in AKC Rally, Agility and Obedience competitions. We talked with Pam Vojtas, the owner of a 4-year-old terrier mix named Charlie, who is a big reason why AKC Canine Partners exists.

Vojtas adopted Charlie from a local rescue group. He proved to be a handful, eating cell phones, a couch and more. Vojtas enrolled him in obedience classes. "He was a 'C' student," she tells Paw Nation, "but one night after class, there was an agility practice going on in the arena, and we were both mesmerized. I signed up the next day for an intro agility class, and the rest, as they say, is history."
