Q: How can I get my recently adopted 1-year-old Maltipoo and my 14-year-old Maltese to be friends?

A: When dogs get much older, sometimes owners bring in a younger dog in order to keep the older dog company. This can work well when a young dog brings some spark and new life to the household. Sometimes, the only reason for adding the younger dog is to anticipate that the older dog may not be around long and this is an attempt to reduce the owner's pain when the loss occurs. (This only works if the owner is fully prepared to meet the needs of the new dog.)

Because there is a wide developmental gap between a 1-year-old dog and a 14-year-old there are different issues that can come up and it can be hard to anticipate which way it will go. The new addition could work out well, or the 14-year-old may be totally annoyed by the new 1-year-old pipsqueak who is jumping around and causing a ruckus.

Maybe it's me but I think it's so stupid when people are afraid of dogs. Well, I understand someone being a little freaked when confronted with a vicious, growling brute but not when somebody balks at the sight of a well-behaved pug just doing his thing. I want to grab the person by the collar and say, "Dude, look at that sweetness, t's called unconditional love. Chill out!"

Nevertheless, I can see nondog people being creeped out by this video of a dog that smiles on cue because, all right, I admit it might, maybe, be interpreted as a growl. But still! This Maltese is so tiny. So furry. So just trying to please. You know it could be the best cuddle buddy ever.

Personality: "The Maltese is a sweet, loving little dog, who wants to be wherever its owner is," says Mary Palmer, president of Northcentral Maltese Rescue, Inc., located in Racine, Wis., a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing Maltese nationwide. "If Maltese cannot be with you, they want to know why. They are affectionate and intelligent almost to a fault." On its website, the American Kennel Club describes the Maltese as "gentle-mannered and affectionate, known for being lively, playfyul and fearless."

Grooming: Because of the Maltese's coat -- which is naturally long, flowing and snowy-white, a gorgeous trait that ranks the Maltese as "an aristocrat of the canine world for over 28 centuries," according to the AKC -- "grooming is a top priority," Palmer says. Most Maltese owners will keep their dogs' coats maintained in some kind of puppy cut, she says. "A visit to the groomer every six to eight weeks is important, and grooming in between visits is a must."

So you want a furry companion, but your home isn't exactly a sprawling canine shambala, but more like a 400 square foot efficiency apartment. Hey, we can't all live on a farm now, can we?

Believe it or not, plenty of dogs are perfectly happy with a few potty breaks and brisk walk in the park. Certified professional dog trainer Jane Del Re of Spots2Stripes thinks there is a dog out there that will fit your lifestyle as long as you're willing to do the work. Here are a few things to keep in mind before you bring your pooch home:

1) Check into what your apartment complex restricts and excludes. "You wouldn't believe how often people forget to check," says Del Re. Your building may have size or weight limitations.

2) Speak with friends and professionals for recommendations of breeds that might be a good fit for your lifestyle. For example, if you want a dog that doesn't need a high level of exercise, Del Re recommends "dogs that were bred to be pets like pugs, Maltese, Boston terriers, pekingese or the Italian greyhound." Another important thing to consider is how much the breed tends to bark as that can make life miserable for you and your neighbors.

A Few Breeds to Consider

Pug: Many of the breed's avid fans stress the pug's laid-back and family-friendly qualities, including even a tolerance for cats and other pets. In fact, the American Kennel Club (AKC) nominates the breed as ideal for apartment-dwellers, stating "They are comfortable in small apartments because they need minimal exercise." Not only are pugs know for their sweet, calm dispositions, they're not generally prone to excessive barking -- a nice trait when you've got neighbors coming and going at all hours of the day.

Brooke Burns with her pet picture

Photo: Fame Pictures

Celebrity pets keep going MIA, but this time there's a happy ending.

Brooke Burns, former "Baywatch" star and co-host of Fox reality game show "Hole in the Wall", was devastated when her black Maltipoo Max went missing last week, just weeks after Jessica Simpson's Maltipoo was snatched up by coyotes.

Burns went so far as to hire FindToto.com, an AMBER Alert-type service that calls neighbors in the area to inform them of a lost pet. (Simpson also hired the service, to no avail.)

Fortunately, all Burns needed was her trusty groomer.

According to TMZ, Burns' groomer mentioned Max's disappearance while chatting with another client -- and it just so happened that the client's neighbor had just found a black Maltipoo. They put two and two together and Max was soon reunited with Burns.

Max's groomer definitely has it!

Boo Boo the long haired chihuahua dog picture

Photo: Rebecca Grunwell, The Gisborne Herald

Current world record holder for smallest dog, Boo Boo, is facing some big, er, little competition. The tiny long-haired chihuahua who lives in Kentucky measures 10 centimeters tall (that's smaller than an iPhone!). But compared to some other petite pups, she may soon be considered a giant.

This year, a six-month-old Maltese named Scooter has been the talk of the small dog block. According to The New Zealand Herald, the pooch measures just slightly over three inches tall from his feet to the top of his shoulder blade, and according to his owner, he hasn't grown since he was two months old. The diminutive dog is so tiny that he can't be put on leash or taken for a walk. And climbing stairs? Not a chance. He eats from an egg cup and weighs less than a block of butter. If Scooter no longer grows, he could take away little Boo Boo's title, but he's not the only teacup pup with his eye on the prize.
