Now here's behavior that's unfamiliar to us. A dog who doesn't want a bone? Who not only doesn't want the bone, but adamantly refuses it? We can imagine a few specific circumstances that led to this.

1. The dog doesn't like any bones ever. (Unlikely)

2. The dog doesn't like this bone in particular, or else it's simply not her favorite bone. (Moderately likely)

3. It's Christmas, and this bone is not the bone that the dog asked for in her letter to Santa! (Highly likely)

Each week, Ben Westhoff shares the ups and downs of owning Pippi, the dalmatian mix he and his wife, Anna, adopted as a puppy in late 2009.

Last week was Christmas, and, like any doting pet owner, Anna and I got Pippi a special present. (Truth be told, we didn't get anything for Nora, our cat, but the supersize portion of catnip we dumped in her bed certainly made her happy.)

When I saw the item in our local pet store, Faux Paws, I immediately knew Pippi would go berserk for it -- it was a 6-inch-long beef bone jam-packed with marrow.
