Adorable adoptable dogs from the Humane Society of New York rubbed furry elbows with celebrities and were treated to swanky snacks and dog-friendly beer at a St. Pawtrick's Day party. The event was hosted at Kimpton's The Muse New York hotel in conjunction with Wendy Diamond's Animal Fair magazine. Everyday pet owners as well as TV personalities and their dogs were decked out in festive attire, all to benefit the Humane Society of New York.

Guests and their pups were offered green hats, beads and more before stepping in front of the cameras for a photo op. Most were already primped and prepared, as you'll see below, but a few still took advantage of the fun props.

Be sure to check out all of the photos and then go online to see what fundraisers are happening in your area for animal welfare organizations or shelters.

Since launching pet lifestyle and animal rescue magazine Animal Fair more than 10 years ago, Wendy Diamond has been dubbed "Canine Queen" by Forbes, and described as "the Martha Stewart of the bone and milk dish," by "The New Yorker." She has published several books, is a regular guest on morning talk shows and was a judge on the CBS reality show, Greatest American Dog.

In her newly released book, "It's a Dog's World: The Savvy Guide to Four-Legged Living," Diamond shares a wealth of information she garnered while traveling the globe with her trusty Maltese, Lucky, whom she adopted in 1998. "I had a dog and a cat and they were a part of a lifestyle," Diamond tells Paw Nation. "My dog didn't want to sit at home and she wanted to go wherever I went, so I began taking her along."

Stowed away in a bag, travel-loving Lucky has been to movie premieres, Broadway show openings and to more continents than most people. "Lucky has been all over the world, from New Orleans to Israel," says Diamond, who devotes a section of her book to identifying the pet-friendliest airlines (Virgin Atlantlic and El Al Israel Airlines for international travel). There is also information about the top-10 kid-friendliest dog breeds, recipes for dog treats, how to exercise your dog, tips for helping your pooch when she becomes car sick, and much more.

"The book is a culmination of everything I've learned in the last decade," Diamond says.

Chicken Soup for the Soul

The popular "Chicken Soup for the Soul" book series has unleashed two new titles just for cat and dog lovers. Entitled "Chicken Soup for the Soul: What I Learned from the Dog" and "Chicken Soup for the Soul: What I Learned from the Cat," each of the books features 101 heartwarming and true tales of love, loyalty and friendship. (Two such stories are excerpted on the Read More page.)

"We learn a lot of lessons from our pets," the books' publisher, Amy Newmark, tells Paw Nation. "If you've had a bad day, having a loving animal waiting for you makes you view life in a simpler way." From a dog who helped a woman recover from alcoholism to a cat who won over a staunchly anti-feline fellow, the stories will make you smile, sometimes cry, but always appreciate the furry friend in your life.

"It was so hard to pick just 101 stories because there were so many wonderful submissions," says Newmark. (The publisher invites the public -- both professional and non-professional writers -- to submit their true tales, and pays $200 for each story selected.)

Newmark asked longtime animal rescue advocate and pet lifestyle expert Wendy Diamond to write the foreword for each book. "Our animals give us unconditional love and are so committed to us," Diamond tells Paw Nation. "The stories are inspiring and help us appreciate what we have in life."

Read on for two stories excerpted from "Chicken Soup for the Soul: What I Learned from the Dog" and "Chicken Soup for the Soul: What I Learned from the Cat."
