Whale-shark watching has brought booming tourism to a once-quiet Philippine village, but now biologists are saying it may not be such a great idea, according to the Daily Mail U.K. Until about two years ago, fishing was one of the chief ways to work in Tan-awan, and fishermen there made a modest living. If the town saw any tourists, they were usually just passing through. But then, Internet postings from a few visitors to Tan-awan reported the fascinating whale sharks that visited the village's waters. People ...
A six-foot-long nurse shark living at the Birmingham National Sea Life Center in England has reportedly become the first shark in the world to have developed a preference for leafy greens over meat. The shark, named Florence, made headlines in 2009 as the first shark in the world to survive an 'out of water' surgery that was necessary to remove a rusty fish hook deeply embedded in her mouth that was discovered after she stopped eating. Visitors to Kelly Tarlton's Underwater World aquarium in New Zealand got a shock when they saw one shark attack another -- and baby sharks swimming out of the gash left in her side. The mother, a school shark, was brought to the aquarium after she was snared by fishermen, and aquarium staff had no idea she was pregnant, according to a press release issued by Underwater World. When a broadnose sevengill shark took out some "normal seasonal aggression" on the expectant mother, it left a gouge big enough for the babies to swim free. Four tiny ...
