Getting into the spirit of the season sometimes requires more effort than just eating tree-shaped cookies or listening to some carols. Sometimes, we need to dress our pets in embarrassing, holiday-themed clothing and take their photos, perhaps even sharing those pics online with the world.

Whether your pet is ready for a complete outfit or just a festive collar, the right apparel can make the season that much brighter. Our friends at Zootoo rounded up some of their favorite holiday costumes for pets to help both you and your four-legged friends celebrate the season.

A cute costume that also acts as a cozy hoodie, the Reindeer Coat from Top Paw lets your unsuspecting pet think that he's wearing a comfy, warm winter jacket when he's really being transformed into an adorable reindeer. And the coat is available in an impressive range of sizes to help ensure an appropriate fit for your reindeer-to-be.

For an easy, comfortable holiday accessory, try the Red & White Santa Bandanna from Kyjen. This canine classic combines soft velvety material with a jolly jingle bell to help keep both you and your pooch in the holiday spirit. And the adjustable Velcro strap helps you achieve a comfortable fit while keeping the bandanna in place through lots of seasonal festivities.

Featuring a comfortable fit and an appealing design, the Holiday Star Cat Collar from Petco allows your cat to get in on the holiday fun without a lot of discomfort. The collar uses an elastic opening to prevent you from struggling to get your cat into costume, and each of the star's five points has a small jingle bell to add to the seasonal feeling.

Made from 100% wool and free of chemicals, each Rustic Snowflake Sweater from Chilly Dog is handmade, featuring an attractive, classic winter pattern with cheerful details. Available in a range of sizes from XX-Small to XXX-Large, the eco-friendly sweater also uses only natural dyes derived from plants for the high-quality wool.

If your pet prefers a simpler way to celebrate the season, try the Holiday Houndstooth Collars from Martha Stewart Pets. These accessories feature a stylish red and white print, with an optional flower detail, and can help your four-legged friend make a festive statement without causing him too much embarrassment at the dog park.

We have never seen a more miserable-looking animal. And this pug has good reason to look like that. Please do not humiliate your pets this way. It's cruel.

Recently we posted an article called "6 Ways to Make Halloween Safe and Fun for Your Dog." One of the most important points made was that "if your dog is OK with wearing a costume, make sure the costume is comfortable." That's good advice, and we stand by it. But you know what? If you have a costume idea as brilliant as this, you have to go for it. We just hope this dog's owners didn't make it wear that tank costume for much longer than it took to shoot this video.

The Tompkins Square Park Halloween Parade in New York City celebrated its twentieth anniversary on Saturday with more than 400 dolled-up dogs competing for a prizes like an iPod Touch, which went to Gracie the pug and her owner, Dewey Moss, who dressed Gracie as Scarlett O'Hara from "Gone With the Wind," reports the New York Post.

The event was a clear indication of two things: the incredible creativity that abounds in New York City, and the intense love New Yorkers feel for their pets. Nobody spends this much time on a dog costume unless there's a serious bond there, right? A few of our favorites from the parade are in the gallery below.
And if you're dressing your pet for Halloween, be sure to submit your photos to us for a chance at having your pet featured in a special Halloween gallery on Paw Nation!

Helping Humane Society animals was the reason this spooky season at Animal Fair Magazine's 9th Annual Halloween Pet Costume Party. Co-hosted by Animal Fair founder Wendy Diamond and the cast of National Geographic Channel's Rescue Ink (a bunch of tattooed, muscular bikers who attended dressed as... tattooed, muscular bikers!), the fete was held at a swanky Manhattan nightclub, and featured some of the city's chicest socialites and their cheekily-attired pups.

As you'll see in our slideshow, the always-crowd-pleasing cavalcade of pirates, princesses, witches and devils was augmented this year by one-of-a-kind costumes inspired by everything from Shrek to the pope!

Today is not only National Cat Day, it is also two days before Halloween. Paw Nation decided to celebrate the two in tandem with this gallery of cats in costumes!
