Ikea. All over the world, bachelors and bachelorettes just out on their own flock to its stores to furnish their nascent apartment dwellings with fashionable particleboard décor. But just because they might not all be able to afford real furniture doesn't mean they don't deserve pets to love and look after. I know I buy my tables and chairs at Ikea because I want to save the money to keep a cat hanging around my bachelor pad. It's in that spirit of inclusion that Ikea shot a commercial at their Wembley, London store for which they let 100 cats run loose, according to Gizmodo. Why exactly did they do this? The ad agency, Mother London, told the Guardian U.K. that cats know how to pursue ...

While the rest of us were celebrating Independence Day fireworks over the weekend, Judy, a female Great Dane and Minnelli, a male goat, were experiencing a different kind of spark, one of the romantic variety. The unlikely lovebirds were found wandering the grounds of a Dallas-area wedding venue last week, KTVT reports. As the pet blog Dogster noted, Judy and Minnelli absolutely adore each other. The unusual couple is currently in the care of the East Lake Pet Orphanage, where Judy paces and whines and Minnelli bleats sadly every time the two are separated from one another. They spend so much time together, East Lake Pet Orphanage veterinarian Karen Fling told KTVT that Minnelli acts more ...

Rescuing puppies isn't for the faint of heart. Case in point, the daring puppy rescue that Zak Anderegg carried out while rappelling into one of Utah's slot canyons. Two weeks ago, Anderegg set out to explore the scenic Arizona-Utah border when he came upon a shocking site: an animal trapped at the bottom of one of the region's famous deep and narrow canyons. Looking over the canyon's edge, Anderegg thought the animal might have been a small calf. "And then the longer I looked at him, I realized he's actually a dog," Anderegg told "Today." An animal lover, Anderegg was exactly the right person at the right place and time to help save the pup's life. Anderegg called his wife and told her ...

As loyal readers of Paw Nation know, we've covered extensively the controversial creative-dog-grooming competitions in the U.S. (featuring the gallery of elaborately groomed dogs that brought out your awe and ire). We've been following the trend in China as well, where the craze has moved beyond the show room to everyday dogs. That's why when we saw this new video at the Washington Post, exploring the Chinese canine fashion, we knew we had to share it. The video features an upscale Beijing pet spa that's making a name for itself clipping and dyeing in an effort to transform English sheepdogs into fairly convincing pandas, and bichons into miniature Spider-Men. The cost for such fancy ...

It's not a flying pig, but it's almost as rare. Here we have a swimming ape! Generally speaking, orangutans can't -- and don't -- swim. They stay away from the water, and if they do happen to slip into the old swimming hole, they're more likely to sink than perfect their side stroke. However, Suryia, a 7-year-old orangutan at Myrtle Beach Safari in South Carolina, is swimming with a passion and skill never before witnessed in his species. Not only does he wade into the water, but he actually is able to dive for "treasures" and swim up to 20 feet independently, reports the (U.K.) Daily Telegraph. It started with his trainer giving him a life vest so he could learn the proper technique, and ...

Sometimes you come across a video that's not just cute, but warms your heart. While it may seem like everything in the news is pretty much horrible all the time, maybe all it takes to restore our faith in basic goodness and decency is a video clip showing a tortoise stopping for a minute to save another tortoise in trouble. ...
