It's nice to see a new ASPCA adoption commercial without having our tears jerked by some sappy Sarah McLachlan song. Don't get us wrong; this ad is going to manipulate your emotions just as hard, but wouldn't you rather be made to consider taking home a needy cat because you have a heart full of warmth rather than eyes full of tears? And if you already have as many pets at home as you can handle, simply sit secure in the knowledge that you've done your part, and enjoy all the cuteness of a talking-animals fantasy world without all the done-to-death pidgin language and endless cheeseburger requests.

Paige poses with her cat, MeeMow. Colleen Paige
We know you want to celebrate National Cat Day properly, so we went straight to the source to learn more. National Cat Day founder Colleen Paige chatted with Paw Nation about how the holiday came to be, how you can celebrate it, and what she hopes people take away from it.
How did National Cat Day come about?
Really, it was a follow-up to National Dog Day, and I simply wanted to give cats a day to be celebrated. They really do what dogs do in terms of giving us unconditional love and companionship, but don't always get the recognition. And sadly, there are so many more cats out there that need homes than dogs.

The hotel heiress and reality star is well-known for her love of diminutive dogs, but last week Paris Hilton decided to explore her feline side.
She broke the news of her kitten adoption on Twitter July 29, tweeting, "I adopted the cutest kitten today. I named her Princess Annabelle. She is so adorable and sweet!" Hilton urged others to contact Laurel Pet Hospital in West Hollywood, California, where she adopted the adorable kitty. "There's other kittens there that are in need of homes," she tweeted.
Apparently, people listened. Dr. Meredith Rettinger, a veterinarian at Laurel Pet Hospital told Paw Nation that the practice, which also rescues animals, has since been getting "a lot of calls" from potential adopters. "Some of the people say that they would never have thought about adopting a mixed-breed cat, and that they've only had purebreds," Dr. Rettinger told Paw Nation. But seeing Hilton adopt a Himalayan-mix cat changed their minds.
