Chaser, a border collie from Spartanburg, S.C., knows a whopping 1,022 nouns -- the biggest canine vocabulary ever reported. Intensive Training Chaser's linguistic feat is no accident. It's the result of thousands of hours of hard work by her owner, John W. Pilley, a retired psychologist. As the New York Times reports, after reading about Rico, a German border collie who'd been taught to recognize 200 toys by name, Pilley began a similar effort.
