Anyone who's ever fed a puppy by hand knows it comes with risks. Jane Curley knew this when she offered her 11-week-old German Shepherd puppy, Greta, a bit of bacon. Not surprisingly, the puppy overshot and ended up biting Curley's finger -- an injury that required three stitches, reports FOX Charlotte.

Curley also wasn't surprised to see animal control show up at her door after her hospital visit, but when the officer said he'd have to take the puppy with him, Curley told FOX Charlotte, "[O]ur jaws dropped to the floor and we just panicked."

Greta is currently being quarantined for 10 days under state law 130A-196, which states that any dog without a rabies vaccine who bites must be quarantined, but here's the kicker -- Greta isn't old enough for the vaccine, reports FOX Charlotte.

Now, here's the part that really, uh, bites -- FOX Charlotte reports that the same statute says "after reviewing the circumstances of the particular case, the local health director may allow the owner to confine the animal on the owner's property." Curley is concerned about the effect this quarantine could have on the young pup's temperament and wonders why that option isn't being offered, since Greta's is obviously the type of case that the provision was designed for.

While, as FOX Charlotte reports, the Mecklenburg County Health Department and CMPD Animal Care & Control are at odds over whether this case was handled properly or not, little Greta remains quarantined at the vet's office, and her owner is barking mad. But, perhaps some good will come from this controversy and the law will be revisited.

An animal control officer in Stoughton, Mass. found a woman's lost dog -- only to give it away as a gift.

As reported by the Brockton Enterprise, an animal control officer, Kristin Bousquet, was fired after an internal investigation and hearing revealed that she had found a lost dog belonging to Janet Torren, and inexplicably gave it away to a police officer and his girlfriend to keep as a pet, all the while telling Torren that she had not found the dog, a four year-old Yorkshire Terrier named Shai, who went missing on September 18.

"Shai is like my child," says Torren, 59. "How could [Bousquet] think that I didn't love my pet enough to go all out to try to get her back?" Speaking with Paw Nation, Torren recounted the story of the efforts she made to find Shai -- and just in the nick of time. When Torren finally was reunited with Shai on October 1, the dog was en route to the airport with her new owners, who were moving to Florida.

Somebody should have explained to Kenneth Lang Jr. that "101 Dalmatians" is not a training video. Last week, Lang was found with over 100 Chihuahuas living with him in his Dearborn, Mich. home.

According to the Detroit News, Animal Control officials made the startling discovery last week when they were called to investigate a man suspected of having feral cats. After finding four kittens hiding under a lawnmower, authorities returned with a search warrant and entered Lang's home. Once inside, they discovered approximately 112 Chihuahuas in the house, and far more tragically -- 150 dead Chihuahuas stored in freezers.

Lang's attorney, James Schmiel, says his client has been undergoing an evaluation and that his client suffered from obsessive compulsive disorder. "Given the situation that they were in, these dogs are in good condition," said Schmier. "He would love to have the dogs back even though that doesn't look possible."

Not likely, since Lang and the puppies were found to be living in squalor with "trash, feces and urine throughout the home."

The case is currently considered a criminal investigation based on animal cruelty law which can carry a sentence of up to four years in prison. The Chihuahuas are currently being cared for by the Dearborn Animal Shelter. Although all 112 surviving dogs have been receiving treatments and proper care at the shelter, they are not yet ready for adoption.
