Welcome to Local Lowdown, where we give you ideas for hanging with your hound (and kitty!) in your area. In this week's column, our last Local Lowdown post for a while, we suggest you head to the wine country for a nice outing with your dog. Many wineries are so dog friendly, they actually have their own resident winery dog, many with the coveted job of Official Greeter.

We list 13 dog-friendly wineries here as well as other resources such as DogFriendly.com to find others close to you.

Be sure to call ahead to ask about their pet policies, but it can be assumed, at the minimum, that your dog must be well-behaved, on-leash and will probably not allowed in the tasting rooms. It is also a good idea to pack food, water and bowls for your pup too.

13 Wineries to Check Out

Branchport, N.Y - Hunt Country Vineyards
In the Finger Lakes region, New York's largest wine producing area, visit Hunt Country Vineyards, and you and your dog will be welcomed by Hedy, the Bernese mountain dog and the official winery greeter. Relax and make a day of it while you sample some of the 24 wines from 100 percent New York State grapes. Find other local listings at the GoPetFriendly blog.

Dahlonega, Ga. - Wolf Mountain Vineyards
At Wolf Mountain Vineyards, dogs are welcome at their outdoor tables and throughout the property. Enjoy the views overlooking the foothills of the Southern Appalachian Mountains and their award-winning wines.

Delaplane, Va. - Barrel Oak Winery
With house red and white wines that feature the winery's golden retrievers on the labels, there's no doubt that Barrel Oak Winery welcomes dogs. Just an hour outside of Washington D.C., escape to the vineyards and enjoy wine-tasting, picnicking and more, where leashed dogs are even allowed in the tasting room. Don't miss the "Paw for Cause" event on June 13, to benefit Maryland Westie Rescue.
Continue reading Local Lowdown - Explore Wineries With Your Dog

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Local Lowdown - June Dog Festivals and Other Woof-Tastic Events

Summer is fast approaching, and it's time to make your travel plans for the family, four-legged members included.

It's easier than ever to find dog-friendly hotels, bed-and-breakfast inns, resorts and more with so many websites dedicated to pet travel and chains that have declared all of their hotels pet-friendly. The sites listed here can help you find accommodations that not only allow dogs of all sizes, but actually cater to them with special services and amenities too. We've also included information about pet-friendly hotel companies and specific hotel and resorts offerings.

Helpful Websites
Start out by hitting the Internet to find all the details you need, such as information about any extra fees that may be required, dog weight restrictions, and more. Once you decide on your accommodations, do confirm the pet policy directly to be sure it hasn't changed. Here are good sites to use to begin your research:

At GoPetFriendly.com, search by city and state to get pet policy details and rates. There's also a road-trip planner to find pet friendly accommodations along your travel route.

While Pets Welcome lists pet friendly accommodations of all types, including campgrounds and B&B locations, what's most impressive is their comprehensive listing of nationwide hotel chains. Along with the chains' general pet policies, you can search for specific properties. The site also has a special category to help you find those accommodations which welcome large dogs, which is often a challenge.

At Vacation Rentals by Owner, search over 140,000 rental properties worldwide, and look for the purple paw icon within your results to find those that are pet-friendly.

Search for accommodations by city, state and country at PetTravel.com then view results with detailed descriptions and, in most cases, the option to book directly online.

Trips with Pets and DogFriendly.com are two more sites to bookmark as pet travel resources.
Continue reading Local Lowdown - Sniffing Out Dog-Friendly Accommodations for Summer Travel

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Local Lowdown - Can Your Dog Fly? Dock diving is a fun and fast-paced sport in which dogs of all breeds, sizes and shapes compete to see who can jump the longest or highest distance into a pool from a dock or raised platform. You will bond with your dog as you compete together in this high-energy dog sport, or simply enjoy getting out to the events as spectators. There are several national dock diving organizations including Splash Dogs and Ultimate Air, but we'll use the DockDogs as an example. Here's what you need to know:

Who can compete? Dogs of almost any age and ability level can participate -- even senior and tiny dogs. Though truthfully, dogs that love to chase, retrieve and enjoy the water will do best. While dogs with these exact characteristics (think Chesapeake Bay retrievers, golden retrievers and Labs) dominated the sport in the early days, you'll now see dogs of all breeds and sizes competing and having a great time.

What happens at competitions? Dock diving comprises three separate events: Big Air, Extreme Vertical and the Speed Retrieve. In Big Air, the most popular event, each dog competes for the longest jump by running down a 40-foot dock into water to retrieve a floatable toy launched by the handler. For the Extreme Vertical, dogs compete to jump the highest and in the Speed Retrieve event, each dog runs to the water, jumps in, and swims to retrieve a toy held on a pole 38 feet past the end of the dock.

Is dock diving something your dog might like? You never know until you try it! The best way is to take your dog to an event and let him jump during the "open dock" practice time. You can do this even if you're not in the competition, and there will be people on hand to help you out. You can also look for a local dock diving club to join. These clubs welcome newcomers, and you and your dog can test the waters by attending one of their practice sessions. The last option is to find a dock on a lake, pond, or river to get your dog used to what the sport involves. Once your dog is jumping off the dock, you are ready to compete!
Continue reading Local Lowdown - Can Your Dog Fly? Now that the weather is warming up, skip the doggie bag and enjoy the fun of dining al fresco with your pooch. You can even find restaurants catering to dogs on special nights with menus and other amenities just for them.

Before you choose to dine out with your pup, call ahead to ensure dogs are welcome and outside seating is available. Also, your dog should be ready for it, i.e. well behaved, particularly around food (counter surfers need not apply), and trained to know "down," "sit," and "stay" commands so as not to disturb others in the restaurant. Doggie diners should always be on a leash, with the leash tethered to your chair or in your hand, and regardless of how good their manners are, they should not sit in chairs or on the table. Lastly, bring your own dog water and foods bowls. "Bone" appétit!

To find dog-friendly dining locations near you, search online or visit BringFido.com or DogFriendly.com and search by city.

We've also listed below sample resources for Austin, Texas; Chicago, Ill.; Los Angeles or Orange County, Calif.; Portland, Ore; New York, N.Y.; and the San Francisco Bay Area, Calif. Also, in the comments below, feel free to post your favorite dog-friendly restaurants and why you love them.

Local Resources

Austin, Texas
Check out Austin's Pet Directory for the scoop on dog-friendly spots in Austin, from casual coffee shops to restaurants of all types, you'll find them all there.

Chicago, Ill.
Visit Chicago Canine for a map and listings of outdoor cafes that allow dogs. Due to a dog-friendly dining ordinance put into place in 2008, Chicago restaurants must have special licenses, may only serve water to its doggie diners and the outdoor dining areas must be accessible from the street only.
Continue reading Local Lowdown - Find Great Places to Dine Out with Your Dog

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Local Lowdown - Hitting the Hiking Trails With Your Dog

Filed under: Dogs, Traveling with Pets

Welcome to Local Lowdown, where we give you ideas for hanging with your hound in your home city. We'll tell you about interesting local events, important activities, useful resources and other fun happenings all across the country. And feel free to help us do a better job by writing in with suggestions for local events near you.

This weekend, mix things up a bit and head to the trails with your dog! Enjoy the beauty of your local state parks and national forests, all while you watch your dog's excitement in exploring new places. Just think how much he'll love the change of scenery and all of the new scents that go along with it.

To find a great hike for you and pooch, seek out dog-friendly trails at Hike With Your Dog. Search by state for listings of over 2,000 state parks, national forests and other areas in the U.S. and Canada that welcome dogs. You'll even find reader suggestions categorized by state and many more ideas on where to hike with your dog. Also try regional hiking resources like Bay Area Hiker for the top dog-friendly spots in the San Francisco Bay Area, or Explorer Dog for the best hikes in Western Washington.

If you prefer to join in with others and participate in groups hikes, look for dog-hiking clubs in your area, a few of which are listed below for the Baltimore/Washington D.C. areas, Greater New York City/New Jersey areas, Honolulu, Los Angeles, and a state-wide club in Arizona.

To make sure your furry hiking companion is prepared and stays safe on the trail, check out the quick list of pointers below, and get more tips here.

Before Your Hike
- Your dog should be fit and healthy so he can enjoy the outing.
- Ask your vet If you have any concerns.
- Begin with shorter hikes and gradually increase the distance.
- Research the areas you're visiting to be sure that dogs are allowed on the trails.
- Ensure your dog is wearing his ID tags, and that the information on them is current.
- Be sure your dog's vaccinations are up to date and its toenails trimmed.
- To avoid an upset stomach, don't feed your dog right before a hike. A few treats are fine.
- Make sure the weather is mild so your dog won't get overheated in particularly sunny or humid weather.
- Pack plenty of water, a bowl from which your dog can drink, poop bags and a dog first-aid kit.
Continue reading Local Lowdown - Hitting the Hiking Trails With Your Dog

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Local Lowdown -- Pawfect Pet Events for the Month of May

Below is a roundup of pet events across the country for the month of May. Not all events are listed here, of course, and that's where help from you comes in! Please post the events going on in your area in the comments section for all to see. Paw Nation's pet people want to know when and where to get out with their pups, or to learn more about pets, and you can help by spreading the word about events in your neck of the woods.

If your town isn't one of the eight listed here from California, Illinois, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Virginia and West Virginia, be sure to search online or check your local newspaper or magazine for ideas.

Berwyn, Ill.
This free event is the perfect way to spend a Saturday!

If you're looking to increase the bond you share with your dog, and experience new activities together, consider checking out the Dog Scouts of America.

With the goal of educating the public about responsible dog ownership, supporting the community, and strengthening the bond between dogs and dog owners, this terrific non-profit organization offers local Dog Scouts of America membership programs across the country.

With the motto "Let us learn new things, so that we may become more helpful," troop members and their dogs work together to master new skills to earn any of over 70 available Dog Scout merit badges. The badges -- which your dog can wear on his red scout vest or neckerchief -- can be earned for backpacking, water sports, community service, tracking, weight pull, search and rescue, sledding, even painting by paw.

To get your dog started on becoming a certified Dog Scout, complete an application to join the national Dog Scouts of America organization, then contact the troop leader in your area. If you can't find a troop in your area, you can start your own, or take advantage of Dog Scouts' "worldwide certification program" that offers certification with the use of video equipment.

Below is a partial listing of local troops and activities including ones in California, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Pennsylvania, Washington plus a Tri-State Troop representing parts of Indiana/Kentucky//Ohio If your area is not listed, go to this link for a full list of Dog Scout troops. Also be sure to add comments below if you've had any experiences with the Dog Scouts.

You don't need to refer to the countless research studies that have proven the mental and physical benefits that animal companionship can give. You live it. So why not consider sharing your pup's friendly charm and companionship with those who would appreciate it? Consider getting your dog certified to become a Therapy Dog. Opportunities for certification are offered year-round across the country, and once certified, you and your dog can volunteer for rewarding work that helps others. Here's what you need to know:

What do Therapy Dogs Do?
Therapy Dogs and their owners work to help children feel comfortable reading aloud, to assist veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, to simply help brighten the day for those in nursing homes and hospitals, and more. Once your dog is certified as a Therapy Dog, you'll volunteer together at hospitals, libraries, nursing homes, and other places to provide comfort and companionship.
Continue reading Local Lowdown: Could Your Dog Become a Therapy Dog?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Local Lowdown: Attend Major League Baseball Dog Days

Now that Major League Baseball season has officially begun, it's time to get tickets to your local team's Dog Day Game!

At these special events you and your pooch will sit in a designated section and can take part in all kinds of activities like pre-game parades around the field, costume contests, special treats and more. Even better, many ballparks donate a portion of ticket proceeds to local animal charities.

Get your seats now and make sure to order Dog Day tickets not General Admission ones so you can have access to the designated section and events. Also be certain that your dog is comfortable with noise and crowds so he enjoys the day.

We've included the dates for games in Atlanta, Chicago, Cincinnati, Houston, Oakland, Miami, New York and San Francisco, If your team isn't listed here, look for the games on your team's promotions and giveaways schedule. Minor League teams often have Dog Day Games as well so check for those too.
While there are fabulous Easter egg hunts and parades for dogs to enjoy this weekend, there's no reason you can't look ahead and plan your dog's social calendar for the month of April. Spring is in the air, and dogs across the country are ready to play. That means it's time for some of the biggest and best dog events the nation has to offer all year!

Here are events in: Austin, Tex.; Charlotte, N.C.; Dallas, Tex.; Davis, Calif.; Portland, Ore.; Raleigh, N.C.; San Diego, Calif.; and Winter Park, Fla. If your town isn't mentioned here, be sure to search online or check your local newspaper or magazine for ideas.

Austin, Tex.
Join thousands of dogs and their people on April 17th at the 12th Annual Mighty Texas Dog Walk and help to bring the Guinness World's Record for "Largest Dog Walk" back to Texas. The three-mile stroll though downtown Austin benefits the Texas Hearing & Service Dogs and every dog gets a gold medal at the finish line. Expect lots of doggie socializing since the current record and number to beat is 10,272 dogs!

Charlotte, N.C.
The April 24th Bark in the Park Dog Festival includes contests, shopping, entertainment and the highlight, the Pooch Parade of Adoptable Dogs. Charlotte's premier dog event, Bark in the Park was enjoyed by 14,500 people and pets last year.
Continue reading Local Lowdown: Woof-Tastic Dog Festivals and Events for April

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Local Lowdown: Doggie Easter Egg Hunts, Parades and More

There are all kinds of Easter-related events this weekend and next that are custom-made for you and your dog.
At Doggie Easter Egg hunts, your dog will love putting fabulous sniffer to work uncovering Easter eggs filled with dog treats. Easter Bonnet Parades and Costume Contests are fun for the canine fashionista and of course any photo op with the Easter Bunny must be taken.

Listed after the jump are events in Chicago, Ill., Westhampton, N.Y., Delray, Fla., Dallas, Texas and the Carmel, Calif. Search online to find other canine-friendly events in your area.

Of course you can always create your own egg hunt just for your dog and his friends! Use large plastic eggs, the bigger the better so your dog can't swallow the plastic and fill them with dog treats. (Don't worry, his powerful nose can smell the treats through the plastic.) Remember to always keep your dog away from chocolate eggs and bunnies.
Continue reading Local Lowdown: Doggie Easter Egg Hunts, Parades and More

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Local Lowdown: Participate in a Spring Running or Walking Race With Your Dog!

Spring is almost here and it's the perfect time to find new activities to enjoy with your dog. What should be at the top of your list? Dog running and walking races! These events offer the perfect combination of dogs and their people socializing and exercising.

The races are typically 1K to 5K, and the choice of whether to walk or run is up to you and your four-legged partner. Most races are offered as fundraisers for animal welfare causes. There often are goody bags for all participants and prizes to the top dogs in categories like size and age. Many events include post-race parties or pet festivals with contests, vendors and entertainment too. If you've never run with your dog before, check out this Paw Nation article that's filled with tips and advice.

While walkers and runners without dogs are invited to join in on the fun, some events offer something special for them, the option to "rent-a-dog" with which to participate in the race. Local humane societies provide the pups and benefit from their "rental fees," and the dogs get in some exercise, socialization and perhaps even a new home.

Here are upcoming races in Fletcher, N.C., Grapevine, Tx., Paso Robles, Calif., Portland, Oreg., Richmond, Va. or Tuscon, Ariz. Or start your search for one in your area.

Fletcher, N.C.
Get your dog's tail wagging at Run for the Paws on March 28th. It's a one-mile walk, post-race Pet Wellness Fair, and more.

Grapevine, Texas
The 11th Annual Hound Dog Hustle on April 24th includes a Dog Costume Contest, Dog Adopt-A-Thon & Expo, and you'll meet the local K-9 Unit there too.
Continue reading Local Lowdown: Participate in a Spring Running or Walking Race With Your Dog!

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Local Lowdown - Celebrating St. Patrick's Day With Your Dog

You don't need an Irish wolfhound, Irish setter or any of the nine dog breeds recognized as the Dogs of Ireland to enjoy St. Patrick's Day with your pooch; you just need to know where to celebrate!

Show your spirit and dress your pup in his finest green attire (if he'll let you), or simply choose a festive shamrock collar or bandana. Then join or watch one of the hundreds of St. Patrick's Day parades planned for this coming weekend. In addition to the floats, bands, Irish dancers and more, many humane societies often join the processions with dogs available for adoption, hoping the luck o' the Irish will find them homes. Chicago's South Side parade even offers a best-dressed "Irish" dog contest.

Below is a sampling of parades celebrating St. Patrick's Day this weekend. Start your search for a parade here or check in with your local Humane Society to see if they have special events planned around the parade in your area.

Chicago, Ill.
Take part in the South Side Irish Parade Family Fest on Sunday, March 14, which includes a parade and festival featuring the best-dressed "Irish" dog contest, live entertainment and more.

Jersey City, N.J.
March with the pups and people of Liberty Humane to show your support at the 48th Annual Jersey City St. Patrick's Day Parade on Sunday, March 14.
Continue reading Local Lowdown - Celebrating St. Patrick's Day With Your Dog

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Local Lowdown: Great Ideas for Dog-Centric Socializing

Your dog is your best friend, exercise partner and confidant (not to mention your furry vacuum cleaner), but more than that, he can also improve your social life by helping you meet other great dog people.

Beyond the regulars at the dog park, stretch your leash a bit further to meet people at dog-owner groups or organized but casual meetups. While your pup plays with his new furry pals, you'll find friendship (maybe even romance!) with those that also share a love of dogs.

There are all kinds of dog-owner groups. Some bring together owners of a particular dog breed or type (small or large dogs), and those centered upon activities like agility, dock diving or hiking. You'll also find groups just for pups in certain areas or neighborhoods, many of which serve to support local parks or dog runs. The groups may meet weekly or monthly with activities ranging from casual outings and walks to seasonal and special events.

To find groups, start at meetup.com and search for your dog's breed, your city or terms like 'large dog breeds' or 'active dogs.'

Here's just a sampling of the some of the dog groups you'll find in San Francisco and New York City:

SAN FRANCISCO
This dog friendly area offers meetups for all kinds of dog breeds from the San Francisco Yorkshire Terrer Meetup Group (765-members strong) to San Francisco Chihuahua Meetup, Bay Area Beagles, and Frenchie Fridays. There are many neighborhood-specific groups too. Active pups may enjoy a dog agility club like the Bay Team, and for pups that love to swim and retrieve, there's Bay Area Diving Dogs.
Continue reading Local Lowdown: Great Ideas for Dog-Centric Socializing

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Local Lowdown: Spay Day

Although there are few things in life more adorable than a litter of puppies, those precious pooches don't always have happy long lives. That's why today is the 16th annual Spay Day sponsored by the Humane Society of United States (HSUS). On this day -- and throughout February -- the HSUS focuses on educating people on how spaying and neutering can help save animal lives.

HSUS explains, "Seven dogs and cats are born every day for each person born in the U.S. Of those, only one in five puppies and kittens stay in their original home for their natural lifetime. The remaining four are abandoned to the streets or end up at a shelter."

Even if your puppies or kittens do find good homes, it means that those new parents won't be rescuing an animal from a shelter. According to the HSUS, there are six million to eight million homeless animals entering animal shelters every year. About half of these animals are adopted, and tragically, the other half are euthanized.
Continue reading Local Lowdown: Spay Day

Permalink | Email this | Comments
