What is it about tennis balls that has every single dog in the world so ensorceled? Is it physical factors like the texture of the felt or the smell of the rubber? Is it the need to please us, the masters, who throw the balls with the expectation that fetching will happen? Throw a tennis ball anywhere in the vicinity of a dog and that dog will become electrified.

Redditor THETUDOR illustrates that electricity perfectly with this photograph. Look at the wildness in their eyes, the joy, the all-consuming need to fetch.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Grizzly Cub and Wolf Cub Are Pals for Life

Here's a pair that you wouldn't expect to see together. Both intimidating presences in the wild, it's not as if grizzlies and wolves are compatriots of the forest. But boundaries get broken through the innocence of childhood, so these two cubs became BFFs in captivity. It's cute to watch them play, but it's all bittersweet knowing their friendship could never last. Or could it? Watch and see.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Dog Is an Awesome Soccer Goalie

Filed under: Dogs, Cats, Funny Animal Videos

OK, between that cat who crashed the EPL match and Ethan the dog's goalkeeping skills, we really think we've hit upon a soccer goldmine here. FIFA has tried a thousand different ways to make Americans care about <strike>football</strike> soccer. Nothing has worked, not even when they let us host the World Cup in 1994, or the subsequent creation of the MLS.

Well, it seems to us that the English Premier League has just stumbled on a new strategy. When this stray cat wandered onto the pitch in the middle of a match between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, it certainly grabbed out attention. So, FIFA officials, why not make cats a regular part of soccer? Sure, you'd have to rewrite the laws of the game fairly drastically and almost certainly infuriate all the footie loyalists in every other nation in the world. But you say you want America's eyes and hearts on soccer. How badly do you want it really?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Cat Listens to Piano Music

Filed under: Cats, Funny Animal Videos

My family adopted a cat in 1990. None of us had ever had a cat before, and I can still remember us discovering a lot of the little ticks and quirks of cat behavior that are very familiar to most cat lovers. In particular I can remember watching the cat take in music in its quiet way. Even if in the middle of a catnap, she would prick up her ears if my father put on one of his Miles Davis records. Over time, I thought I could tell when she was enjoying whatever music was on, or if she was merely hearing it and tolerating it.

How about you, readers? Do you like to play music for your pets?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Woman Gets Emotional Over Penguin Hug

Filed under: Birds, Funny Animal Videos

Is there a new viral trend of people so emotionally overwhelmed by animal encounters that they burst into tears? Last week, actress Kristen Bell had a mini-breakdown after meeting a baby sloth who was literally too cute to handle. Now this Redditor's wife is crying with joy when her favorite animal, a penguin, gives her a hug on her birthday during an encounter at Sea World.

How about you, dear Paw Nation reader? Is there a certain animal to which you feel such a connection that you'd cry if you ever got to meet one?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Bryn the Dog and Barney the Penguin

Filed under: Dogs, Birds, Funny Animal Videos

Everyone's standing around giggling at Bryn because they think it's so cute how she desperately wants to play with that penguin. "Oh, if only I could swim in the sea," they think she thinks. What they don't realize is that that penguin totally stole Bryn's wallet, and it's mercilessly taunting her right to her face. No wonder she's flipping out.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Monday Squee - Little Kitten Gamer

Filed under: Cats, Funny Animal Pictures

I'm not a gamer. I haven't played video games in years. Don't get me wrong; I'm not against video games. It's just that, well, at a certain point my cat fell in love with my PS3 controller. I never had the heart to take it away from her, so I just sort of fell out of the gaming habit. My friends at Daily Squee are kind of bummed that I never play online with them anymore, but what can I say? It brings me more joy just to see her snuggled up like that with the joysticks.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

2,000 Ducks

Filed under: Dogs, Birds, Funny Animal Videos

Hey, do you remember last week when we were all sort of charmed but mostly terrified by that stampede of 42 St. Bernards?

Well, how do you feel about 2,000 freakin' ducks?!

Frankly, there's no doubt in our minds that the two videos are related. It's the Canine-Anatid Wars all over again! Will this dog-duck aggression ever end? Can these age-old enemies ever hope for peace?
You'd think that whenever Teddy Bear shows up, it would sate our obsession with animal noms. But the truth is that the opposite occurs. We want to see more noms.

With that in mind, here's a super dramatic time-lapse video of a tortoise eating a pile of salad. Why time-lapse? Because tortoises are slow, dummy! You don't have all day to watch this and neither do we. Also, because time-lapse is just cooler than regular-lapse. That's a science fact.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Teddy the Porcupine Has a Valentine

Filed under: Exotic Pets, Funny Animal Videos

Teddy Bear visited us last week, using his snacking skills to predict the winner of yesterday's Super Bowl. And wouldn't you know it? The New York Giants won the game, just like Teddy Bear said they would (much to my chagrin, as I hail from New England and a dyed-in-the-wool Patriots fan).

Fresh from his prognosticatory success, Teddy Bear is setting his focus on the next great holiday, Valentine's Day. Does Big T have a secret admirer? It's not us. Our admiration for Teddy isn't secret; it's public and well documented. But somebody sent the porcupiny paramour a heart-shaped box full of corn. Naturally, Teddy opted to wolf down all the corn in one sitting rather than try to make it last until the 14th. But why stop there? We love dogs, but 42 full-grown St. Bernards panting and running around the same place at the same time looks and sounds like the end of the world. Punxsutawney Phil isn't the only prognosticating animal out there. Our porcupine friend Teddy Bear is finally back, and this time he's showing us that there's more to him than just epic snacking. This time around, Teddy is picking the big winner for this weekend's Super Bowl between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants. Who does Teddy think it's going to win? You'll have to watch the video above to find out. And of course you'll have to wait for Sunday to find out if he's right.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

It's Groundhog Day!

Happy Groundhog Day! Depending on your perspective, Groundhog Day is either the silliest, stupidest, or most fun holiday on the calendar. We love animals at Paw Nation, so we know that this is, in fact, the best of all American holidays.

But there's more to these "giant grumpy squirrels who dig burrows underground" than you might realize. For example, did you know that in Alaska, they did away with Groundhog Day a few years ago in favor of Marmot Day? (Pipe down, Alaskans; we know you knew that.)

Watch the video above to learn more about groundhogs and their day.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Baby Monkey Adorably Nibbles Shoelaces

After we saw this video, we immediately dispatched a team of Paw Nation field agents to the location it was shot in an attempt to recreate this event. Unfortunately, we couldn't make it work. We found several baby monkeys, but none of them were interested in our operatives or their shoelaces. We then tried contacting the YouTuber who posted this video to ask what irresistible substance was used to coat the subject's shoelaces in order to attract the adorable monkey, but we have not received a response.

If you or anyone you know can figure out the secret to this monkey encounter, please e-mail us that information. Because seriously, you guys; We wanna meet a baby monkey.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Name a Baby Penguin!

Filed under: Birds, Animal Sites We Love, Funny Animal Pictures

Ever dreamed of naming a baby penguin? Wow, really? That's weird. That's a really specific dream. But we're not here to judge you; we're here to help make your weirdly specific dream come true!

A Humboldt penguin chick was born at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in January, and there is a contest to name the baby bird. Read the rules and guidelines for the naming contest here and submit your names here. Bulldogs aren't the most active breed there is. They're not sporting dogs, and you won't need a huge backyard for a bulldog to run and play in. They make great apartment pets because they love loafing around just like you do.

Maybe that's why it seems like bulldogs take just a little bit longer to figure out this whole walking thing. It sure is cute to watch them try. Don't give up, little guy.
The next time a random dog humps your leg, it may help to remember that the dog is probably just as confused and disappointed as you are.
"So where's your new dog, man?"
"What are you talking about? He's right there."
"What? Where?"
"Dude, he's right there on the floor. Right in front of us."

It's difficult to tell how old this dog is. One thing is for sure: He looks a lot older right now than he probably is. And we'll wager a guess that he probably feels quite a bit older than he is too. Kittens will have that effect on you. A kitten may be the cutest thing in the world, but it's also a handful. Have to deal with three kittens at once? Well, prepare to get frazzled.

These kittens are starting to wake up, but Fido looks like he'd just as soon roll over and snooze for another hour or two. Imagine if you had three 4-year-olds, and it's 5 a.m. on Christmas morning, and all three kids are trying to get you out of bed. Now imagine that's every day. Sympathize with this poor pooch yet?

Permalink | Email this | Comments
