You'd think the ad wizards here in the States would have the presence of mind to slap a necktie and a pair of specs on a cat. I guess if you spend too much time outside the box, you get scooped on an obvious, classic idea like this. Instead, we Yanks get stuck with a talking garden gnome for years and years.

YouTube user sunovia5 helpfully provides a rough translation of the commercial's voiceover dialogue: "'I'm Niyaran. Today big profits are a hard task. (while looking at computer) It's grown! (profits are up!).' Tagline: 'Profitable: Hotel Yakumo.'" So we guess it's a commercial for a hotel that caters to business travelers? Who cares; the silly cat is wearing glasses and taking a plane ride! Cuuuuuuuute!
You pretty much have to be cute on some level to make it as a star on the Disney Channel. And if degree of cuteness dictates level of success, then Miley Cyrus must be the cutest Disney Channel star of all time. But she's hedging her bets.

Just to keep her cuteness locked down for a little longer, Cyrus -- aka Hannah Montana -- recently was spotted out and about with her adorably fuzzy new puppy in her arms.

His name is Mate, inspired by Cyrus's nickname for her Australian boyfriend. No word yet to confirm the pooch's breed, but really, who cares? The thing is adorable as all getout. Isn't that all we really need to know?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Blind Angler Catches Record-Breaking Catfish

Holy mackerel!

Holy catfish, rather. This 15-stone, 4-pound catfish (that's 214 pounds to Yanks like you and me) broke records recently when a woman wrestled the leviathan from a Spanish river while on vacation, reports the (U.K.) Daily Mail. As if that feat wasn't impressive enough, the accomplished angler in question happens to be a mere 5'3" in stature, a grandmother, and legally blind. The superwoman, Shiela Penfold, 56, took 30 minutes to bag the beast.

The monstrous catfish, dragged from the depths of the River Ebro near Barcelona, measured a terrifying 8 feet, 2 inches in length. Penfold used halibut pellets as bait to supplement what we presume is her superhuman strength.

"I was exhausted but elated afterward," Penfold told the Daily Mail. "I'm still walking around with a smile on my face. But it goes to show that just because you are blind it doesn't stop you breaking records like this."

After snapping a few photographs of the catfish that will give you nightmares for the rest of your life, Penfold released her vanquished opponent back into its freshwater home.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

R.I.P.

Last summer, we reported the story of Casper, a 12-year-old cat from Plymouth, England who bizarrely but charmingly lined up every morning at 10:55 to take the same 11-mile round trip on the No. 3 bus. Now we are saddened to learn that Casper has died, struck and killed by a car, according to the (U.K.) Daily Mail.

Casper's owner, Susan Finden, told the Daily Mail that the driver who hit Casper did not stop after running over the cat. "Casper died from his injuries," Finden said.

Casper was, in fact, crossing the street to catch his usual No. 3 bus when he was struck by the car that killed him. "Casper was quite quick for his age but I was trying to stop him from riding the bus so much," Finden told the Daily Mail. "He had no road sense whatsoever."

Finden posted a sign at Casper's bus stop to let commuters know that they'd no longer be enjoying the company of the cat of whom they'd grown so fond. "He will be greatly missed," Finden said. "Thank you to all those who befriended him."

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Polar Bear Cub Debuts in Japanese Zoo

Another week, another bear-cub zoo debut. "We'll see your 5-month-old panda and raise you a 3-month-old polar bear," Japan taunted San Diego this week. "Not fair," San Diego's Yun Zi protested after watching the video below. "That polar bear gets her own stuffed toy polar bear to play with. That's adorable. How am I supposed to compete with that?" The dejected panda cub then waddled off into a patch of bamboo to eat his feelings.
Pandas: They're friggin' cute. They're so irresistible, in fact, that science has shown that even the most jaded and beaten down of misanthropes are thawed when presented with images of pandas at play. If there's someone in your life who's depressed or angry at the world, just show them this video of Yun Zi, the San Diego Zoo's 5-month-old giant-panda cub.
You know when you see some mom or dad at Target lose their cool and start screaming at their child in the middle of the store? You might think to yourself, "What a terrible, impatient parent! And how uncouth, to cause such a scene in public." But don't judge. If a kid pesters you enough, at some point you're going to want to bite off their head.

Lions don't have department stores, but they do have kids, and even in the animal kingdom, it seems, kids can be annoying pains in the neck. Take this leonine papa at the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park, for example. By the (UK) Daily Mail's account, he showed the patience of Mufasa as his bratty cub "spent hours tugging on his mane and chewing his fur." But there's only so much even the king of the jungle can take before his patience runs out. Dad whipped around and wrapped his jaws around the cub's dome as if to say, in the immortal words of Dr. Cosby, "I am your father. I brought you in this world, and I'll take you out."

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Monkeys Eating Jell-O

Very few people actually like Jell-O (exceptions: hospitals, college students, and Dr. Cosby).

Well, it turns out we can add monkeys to that short list of Jell-O fans. Zookeepers at the Bronx Zoo recently presented their squirrel monkeys with a batch of the gelatin dessert as a holiday treat. The adorable primates were fascinated by the jelly texture of the "food," but seemed more interested in getting to the more appetizing blueberries within. Watch the video below.
What's the cutest animal? That's right, the giant panda. And what's the cutest thing a giant panda can be caught doing? No, I'm sorry; "sneezing" is only the second cutest thing. The correct answer: The cutest thing a giant panda can be caught doing is falling (literally!) asleep on its feet.

Tai Shan, the four-year-old panda in Washington's National Zoo, did just that last week. He tried fighting against the Sandman's spell, determined to stay upright, but eventually his drowsiness won out -- until his own forward momentum propelled him into a hilarious nap time somersault. Luckily for all of us, a zoogoer managed to capture Tai Shan's adorable clumsiness on camera, and shared her photos with the (UK) Daily Mail.
"If you've lost a pet -- DO NOT GIVE UP!"

Cat owner Tracie Steger posted those words of encouragement on Craigslist last month when her pet cat returned home after having been missing for almost two weeks, reports the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times.

Giggle-Blizzard is one of Steger's many pets, including six other cats and two dogs. Steger normally allows her animals to roam free and unattended in her yard, and they are trained well enough to come to her when she calls them in. But according to the paper, on November 15, Steger was dismayed to find that one of her cats -- Giggle-Blizzard -- did not return with the rest of the pets.

Steger's next moves were the standard actions familiar to anyone who's ever been unfortunate enough to lose a pet: an immediate but fruitless neighborhood search; signs attached to telephone polls; calls to neighbors; posts placed on Craigslist. "I was frantic," Steger told the St. Petersburg Times. But as the days passed, hope dwindled.
Continue reading Lost Cat Returns Home With Two Broken Legs

Permalink | Email this | Comments

First Case of Swine Flu in Dogs Reported

Filed under: Dogs, Pets News, Pet Health

The spread of the virulent H1N1 flu strain (a.k.a. swine flu) continues as the virus apparently has made the transition from humans to dogs. The AP is reporting the first case of a canine swine-flu infection coming out of White Plains, N.Y. this week, with the diagnosis confirmed by two separate labs. The unfortunate victim is a 13-year-old mixed-breed dog who currently is recovering in an animal hospital.

The incident has taken experts by surprise. Until now there has been no evidence of H1N1 spreading from humans to dogs, but it appears that the dog contracted the virus from its owner, who had been ill with swine flu. The virus previously has been seen to transition from humans to cats and ferrets.

Be aware of symptoms in your dog such as breathing problems, sneezing, and vomiting. If your dog is exhibiting these symptoms, don't wait to bring it to the vet, but don't panic either; it remains very unlikely that your dog will have been infected with swine flu. Any number of more common illnesses is more likely the culprit.

And of course, "Don't play kissyface with your dog," advises Ann Hohenhaus, spokeswoman for the Animal Medical Center in New York. In this video, a group of intrepid Welsh shepherds nicknamed the Baaa-studs (wordplay!), come together to plumb the previously unexplored creative possibilities of their ancient craft, all in service of a viral campaign for Samsung. Though the video was admittedly "helped enormously" in postproduction, the Baaa-studs are genuine shepherds, their canvas an actual Welsh hillside, and their medium real sheep.
Now there's a kid on a bus. Of course, in this case by "kid" we mean "baby goat." This goat is awfully determined to get on that bus! Maybe it really wants to learn its reading, 'riting, and 'rithmetic. Or maybe it just misses its girl when she's at school all day. Either way, there's only three words to describe it: "Funny. Silly. Funny."
Psssh. That ain't nothing compared to Buju Banton over here. According to the Rexburg Standard Journal, this dog (yes, that is indeed what this Rastafarian-Cousin-It-looking creature is) was snagged by police when a resident of St. Anthony, Idaho reported an "animal of unknown species" in her backyard.

The police contacted the local chapter of the Humane Society, who brought the extraordinarily hirsute canine to a nearby animal hospital. The staff there were able to remove nine pounds of matted hair from the 11-pound dog, although the poor, put-upon pooch had to be anesthetized in order to remove the hair from his paws. Because of the neglect, the dog will require some further medical care, and remains in the custody of the Humane Society.
Police were able to locate the owner of the dog, but he or she was found to be of "diminished capacity," and will probably not be charged for animal cruelty or neglect, reports the Rexburg Standard Journal. The owner had other dogs as pets too, but those animals were judged to be in good health.

Those photos of the dog with all that matted fur are funny and cute, and it's OK to have a chuckle over them, but in the end it's not worth the price of a neglected dog who had to suffer with almost twice his body weight in dreadlocks dragging him down and making him sick. We're glad the little fella is getting the care he needs, and we hope that the owner will receive the care that he or she needs as well.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
