The Westminster Kennel Club 134th Annual Dog Show (Feb. 15-16) is like Oscar night for dogs... so let's meet the stars! Paw Nation spoke with some of the Westminster show dog's owners to give you a sneak peek at the adorable contestants you'll see prancing around the ring on the big day.

Dog Breed: Tibetan Terrier

Group: Non-Sporting

Dog's Full Registered Name: Ch. Ri Lee's Diamonds Are Forever

Nickname: Sydney

Dog's Age: 4

Owners' Names: Brenda Algar and Nikkie Kinziger

Hometown: New Castle, Del.

I heard Sydney was mauled by a wild animal and almost died?
It's true, on Dec. 15, 2007, three days after her second birthday, Sydney was badly mauled in a near-fatal attack by a bobcat in the fenced yard at our home in Maine. She underwent two emergency surgeries to save her life and repair her front left leg.

Tell me about Sydney's personality.
She knows that she's a princess, but she's not a spoiled princess. She's like Grace Kelly: graceful, sweet and dignified. She carries herself well and she knows who she is. Sydney is unlike any other Tibetan I've had.

What is her biggest quirk?
She chases her tail. I don't have another dog that does this and I have seven. And she'll catch it, hold onto it and then chase it the other way.

What is her best trick?
She doesn't really do tricks -- Tibetens aren't trick-type dogs -- but the thing she does do that is like a trick is when we're showing and she stops, looks right at the judge and wags her tail a little.
Continue reading Meet the Westminster Dogs: Sydney the Tibetan Terrier

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ch.
Dog Breed: Puli

Group: Herding

Dog's Full Registered Name: Ch. Lajosmegyi's Singin in the Rain

Nickname: Kelly

Dog's Age: 5

Owners' Names: Anna Quigley, Patricia Turner, and Steve and Alice Lawrence

Hometown: Chehalis, Wash.

Tell me about Kelly's personality.
He is one of the sweetest puli I have ever been around. Kelly enjoys life to the fullest and loves people. He is so calm before he goes in the ring and then when he's there, he's perfect. He has been raised with his sister and they are very close.

What is his best trick?
He jumps straight in the air and touches the top of a six-foot fence. He has tried to do this in the ring but is afraid of slipping on the floor!

What's his weirdest quirk?
He loves riding on top of his crate.

What is his favorite treat?
Bully Sticks are his favorite chew and boiled chicken is his favorite treat.

How do you and Kelly prepare for Westminster?
We use a treadmill to keep Kelly in condition. We have 60-foot runs, but the dogs hate the rain -- and we get so much of it in the Northwest. Most important is his mental conditioning. We make sure he has rest and try to keep him from being bored.

Anything else you'd like to share?
It is just such a thrill to be the breeders of two great dogs. His littermate Conrad is the puli that won the group last year at the Garden. Going is as much about seeing old and new friends as it is about being in the show.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ch. What animal lover hasn't daydreamed about ditching their desk job and applying for a job at the zoo? Or at a doggy daycare? Or tracking gorillas in Africa? We sure have, but since most of us may never actually get to work with the animals we love, we thought we'd introduce you to a few people who do.

Name: Brent "The Bug Guy" Karner
Age: 39
Job: Manager of Invertebrate Living Collections at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County

Tell me about what you do at the museum. It looks like a fun job!
My job title is Manager of Invertebrate Living Collections, which is a mouthful, so I just call myself "Brent the Bug Guy." For the last 20 years, I've been using my knowledge of bugs to educate the public, because I've found that while I like bugs, most people don't.

What made you want to work with animals and teach people about them?
As I got involved with museums, I realized that this is a great way to introduce people to these animals. I'm not looking to turn them into entomologists, but if I can get Joe Blow to look at the bug before he steps on it, I've done my job. I'm in the de-education business, taking generations of preconceptions, stories and myths that have created misunderstandings that have made us loathe these animals to the point where we try to separate ourselves from them; and that's something from an ecological perspective that we cannot do. We have to understand them for what they are. The usual lines about how important they are don't make a difference until people have to actually meet one up close and personal and see it won't eat their children.
Continue reading I Work With Animals: Brent "The Bug Guy" Karner

Permalink | Email this | Comments

First-Ever Cat Corporate Executive Named in Japan

In Japan, a 10-year-old cat named Tama has been promoted to an executive position at the Wakayama Electric Railway Co. Promoted, you say? That's right! Tama has quickly climbed the corporate cat tree with promotion after promotion since she assumed her first position as stationmaster of Kishi Station in January 2007. It seems her superiors felt she was ready for a bigger challenge.

In fact, the company says Tama has been instrumental in increasing ridership by about 300,000, and they gave her the promotion "in recognition of her contribution to expanding the customer base," the Manichi Daily News reports. Tama will continue to serve as stationmaster while tackling this new role, although she did not accept a wage increase (and her payment currently is rendered in the form of cat food). It also doesn't sound like she'll have to take on any of the more stressful parts of being a corporate executive. Her job description includes greeting customers as they enter the station, posing for photos with tourists, and napping.

The company held an official appointment ceremony for Tama, and about 100 fans came to support the feline, says the Manichi Daily News. In addition, plans are in motion to rebuild Kishi Station into the shape of a cat's face this summer. Success: She has it!

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Abandoned Pets Survive to Tell the 'Tail'

Filed under: Dogs, Pets News, Hero Pets

A house in Walnut Creek, Calif., had been vacant for several weeks, leading suspicious neighbors to call animal control to investigate. When they arrived, they discovered two crates full of chihuahuas, none of which had survived. But the tragedy was joined by an incredible story of survival in the locked bathroom, where a kitten, a chihuahua, and Leonardo, a 108-pound mastiff, stayed alive against all odds, reports the San Jose Mercury News. Experts suspect the three animals drank toilet water to survive, and lasted weeks without food, with Leonardo never turning on his much smaller companions.

Instead, the traumatic experience created a special bond between the three animals, with Leonardo instantly cheering up when he saw the kitten again during pet therapy sessions. But he was not out of danger just yet. After several months in a county shelter, the kitten and chihuahua were both adopted, but lovable Leo had yet to find a family, and was scheduled to be put down. That's when the local Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF) stepped in to give him another chance.

After ARF made his story public, they received a record number of calls about adopting Leonardo. A local couple gave him a comfortable new home last weekend, while the interest raised by the story had the shelter adopting twice as many animals as usual - a much-deserved happy ending for everyone involved.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Funny Cat Video: The Return of Ninja Cat

Filed under: Cats, Funny Animal Videos
The infamous Ninja Cat is at it again! If someone on your list is wishing for a pet this holiday season, here are some tips and things to consider to make sure that everyone -- including the new animal -- is jolly. Sherry Woodard is resident animal behavior consultant for Best Friends Animal Society, an animal advocacy group that also runs an animal sanctuary, as featured on the National Geographic show, "Dogtown." She offers some smart advice on making this important decision.

Is a pet the right gift?
Owning a pet is one of the most rewarding things life can offer and it's the start of a friendship that will last for years, but pets also come with serious responsibilities and a commitment to their health and happiness. Before deciding what kind of animal to buy, first consider the following questions:

- Is the giftee ready for the responsibility of pet ownership? If the answer ends up being no, are you prepared to take on full responsibility yourself? If you don't think your kids are ready, perhaps give a lower-maintenance animal, like a fish, and see if they demonstrate the responsibility necessary for that desperately-wanted puppy.

- Has the giftee expressed a clear desire for a new pet? This is one case where a truly surprising gift might be an unpleasant surprise. If you're not sure, Woodard suggests using creative ways to find out: Walk them by a pet-store window; leave Animal Planet on in the background during dinner; take a stroll around the local park or dog run to see if any particular pet catches their eye.
Continue reading The Purr-fect Gift: A Guide to Giving a Pet

Permalink | Email this | Comments

All Aboard! Kenmore the cat, a local celebrity to riders of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's Green Line train in Boston, has found a new home. Trolley operator Karen Ingraham adopted Kenmore after the cat spent more than five months eluding capture and making occasional appearances in Kenmore station, becoming an urban legend in the process.

The Boston Globe reports that Kenmore was first seen by riders between stations, huddling by the rails and dodging oncoming trains. MBTA employees attempted to lure him with water and food, to no avail. Eventually, the cat was brave enough to make Kenmore station his own, lounging on the platform and being snapped for a rare pic that definitively proved his existence to online fans who eagerly discussed each kitty sighting.

Finally, Ingraham became concerned for Kenmore's safety and spent one of her days off unsuccessfully trying to capture him. She did not succeed that day, but another MBTA employee soon did, and Ingraham now has adopted the lucky cat into her home. According to her, Kenmore had never been out of the subway before, but he won't be returning to the rails anytime soon.
British comedian Russell Brand, best known in the States for a memorable role in the movie "Forgetting Sarah Marshall", has been spending more time in America now that's he's in a tabloid-fodder relationship with singer Katy Perry. There's just one problem: With all his travel away from London, he's had to leave behind his beloved cat Morrissey (named after the legendary lead singer of the Smiths). Now Brand wants to obtain a cat passport so Morrissey can join him in his travels.

"Disappointingly, there's no photo in them, which I was looking forward to," Brand told to the Melbourne Herald Sun. "I was hoping the passport man would look at the picture and go, 'Not that photo -- your cat's smiling!' but sadly that's not going to happen."

While it sounds like a joke, the pet passport system, called PETS (Pet Travel Scheme) does exist in many countries, including the U.S. and the U.K., to help remove the months-long quarantine period that can be enforced when an animal travels internationally. Now pets that have been certified as rabies-free and given an identifying microchip can get a document allowing them to move with their owners easily between participating countries. You can read more about PETS on the British government's official site.
Best friends always show up when you least expect them -- and when you need them most.

Big Boy, a guinea pig so named for his hefty 3-pound frame, was scheduled to be euthanized at a shelter before being taken in by the Cavy House, a guinea-pig rescue shelter in La Honda, Calif., reports Mercury News.

There, Big Boy met Rosie, another guinea pig who had stopped eating after a previous friend had died, and was rapidly losing weight. Their friendship blossomed as they began nuzzling between their cages, and with Big Boy around, Rosie was inspired to begin eating again.

Mercury News reports that things took another turn when Big Boy was diagnosed with lymphoma, which typically claims the life of a guinea pig in a matter of days. But with chemotherapy treatments and Rosie's support, Big Boy made a swift recovery and is now completely cured and active over half a year later. Big Boy and Rosie also fostered two young orphans, helping wean them until they could be adopted into happy homes. The two guinea pigs continue to help others as much as they help each other.

The pair remain in the care of the small, non-profit Cavy House rescue shelter. One tiny kitten has a lot to be thankful for this holiday season.

According to WJXT in Jacksonville, Fla., the cat was spotted hanging onto an axle underneath a car as the vehicle traveled up to 70 miles per hour down Interstate 95. Eagle-eyed motorist Amy Jones spotted the kitten stuck under the other vehicle and motioned to its driver to stop.

Once they pulled over, another bystander climbed under the car and found the kitten, whose paws were injured from holding on so tightly, but was in otherwise good shape. The cat, now named Axel due to his ordeal, was quickly taken to a nearby veterinarian's office, where he is making a speedy recovery.

Especially during the cold winter months, cats have been known to climb into the small spaces beneath cars, seeking warmth. Axel's story can remind all drivers to be especially careful to ensure no outside animals have taken shelter underneath their cars before pulling out of the driveway.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Pet Product Review: Dog Gone Smart Bed (It's Smart for Cats Too!)

My cats love a good place to curl up and nap (the more expensive or delicate the surface, the better), but there is a continuous battle between me -- the neat-freak owner -- and the hair that inevitably builds up on their favorite perches. I've had to retire many a standard cat bed after hair became too thickly mashed and entwined in the bed's fibers, despite my brushing and rubbing with sticky wipes.

Enter the Dog Gone Smart Bed, which, while technically was designed for dogs, is a great option for fur-fighting cat owners too. The patented NanoSphere material boasts anti-odor and anti-stain properties (great for dog owners), but the real innovation is how easy it is to remove hair from it. A month's worth of my two cats' hair was easily removed with a few swipes of damp paper towel, which makes me wish everything in my apartment (and my closet!) was upholstered in the fabric.

As advertised on the company's Web site, both ketchup and honey easily slid off with a quick run under the faucet, and of course, water beads right off without absorbing into the fabric. They company also claims it's easy to cancel out smells and stains from bed-wetting, but I thankfully haven't needed to test the veracity of that claim.
Continue reading Pet Product Review: Dog Gone Smart Bed (It's Smart for Cats Too!)

Permalink | Email this | Comments

The 'Dog Whisperer' to Become Sitcom Starring Wilmer Valderrama

Have you ever watched "Dog Whisperer" and thought to yourself, "This is a great reality show, but it would make a really great sitcom"? Well, you're in luck. According to Variety, a new comedy based on Cesar Millan's life -- currently the subject of his own Emmy-award-nominated reality show on the National Geographic Channel -- is in development at Fox and will star Wilmer Valderrama, best known for his role as Fez on "That 70's Show," as a successful dog trainer.

We hope that, if it makes it to air, the new show will last longer than another popular reality star's attempt at crossing over to the traditional sitcom format. Emeril Lagasse's famously doomed self-titled sitcom lasted less than one season back in 2001 before it was yanked off the air. Maybe viewers are looking for a little less bam! and a lot more ssh!

But our real question is: Who will be cast to play the adorable Daddy?
YouTube offers more than hilarious excerpts of obscure Japanese game shows and poorly warbled covers of Top 40 songs. The site now has enlisted its millions of users to submit inspiring videos to promote change on a local and global level.

During the month of October, the YouTube Video Volunteers channel raiseed awareness of animal-welfare issues with inspiring and heart-wrenching videos about the importance of animal shelters, adoption and spaying/neutering pets. Celebrity guest curator Ben Stein joined regular viewers to choose the top three, which are being on YouTube's home page at the end of the month.
