Food Network Star Rachael Ray needs a new recipe, but this time, it's for how to keep her much adored pit bull Isaboo from attacking other dogs. The TV host is distraught over the future of her aggressive dog and fears she may have to be put to sleep, reports RadarOnline.

While being walked by a dog handler in New York City earlier this month, Rachael's beloved pit bull allegedly tore off another dog's ear before her handler could tug the pooch away, according to a report in the National Enquirer.

Luckily, a vet was able to repair most of the injured dog's ear and Rachael and her husband, attorney John Cusimano, offered to pay for all medical bills, reports RadarOnline.

Rachael herself has been injured during Isaboo's run-ins with other dogs. The New York Post reported that when Rachael tried to intervene in dog fight three years ago, she was bitten by the other dog. In that case, it seems as though the other dog started the brawl, but the Emmy Award winner fears that Isaboo's behavior eventually will go beyond aggression towards other dogs and become a threat to children or adults, reports RadarOnline.

American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen Director Mary Burch recommends that Isaboo get an evaluation by a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist (CAAB) or another experienced canine professional to help determine the severity, possible causes, and how to get the situation under control. When a CAAB is brought in, for example, the first step would typically involve the animal behaviorist accompanying Rachael and Isaboo on a walk where they're likely to encounter dogs so that the behaviorist can better assess the situation

Isaboo, who Rachael sometimes calls 'Baby," has made guest appearances on Everyday with Rachael Ray. The dog also appears with Rachael in ads for Nutrish, the chef's line of dog food and treats. Back in August, Rachael told Paw Nation all about her deep connection with Isaboo and her former dog Boo: "They've taught me so much about life and the capacity an animal has to offer unconditional love."

While Rachael clearly adores Isaboo, her pooch's aggression can have several causes and may be based out of fear. "Aggression can occur when dogs are protective of their owners (and owners reinforce the aggression), or when dogs are not properly socialized from an early age," says Burch.

But, there's hope for difficult dogs like Isaboo. Depending on the severity of the situation and the causes, it could take just several weeks or even just a few months for both owner and dog to learn how to keep antagonistic behavior under control, especially when she's in the presence of other dogs. "An animal behaviorist will spend a good portion of time training the person who is at the other end of the leash, in this case, Rachael and her husband," says Burch.

We wish Rachael the best of luck with Isaboo. What do you think about other, more vicious dogs? Do you believe that even the most aggressive dog can be rehabilitated or are some beyond hope."

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Valentine's Special: Pets in Love

We're not the only ones who celebrate Valentine's Day! With the Westminster Kennel Club 134th Annual Dog Show almost upon us (Feb. 15-16), Paw Nation will be talking with some of the show dogs' owners for some insight into this year's contestants.
Dog Breed: Havanese

Group: Toy

Dog's Full Registered Name & Nickname: Am Can Ch Heartland's Rumor Has It

Nickname: Rumor

Dog's Age: 3

Owner's Name: Sandy McCabe, Wade Koistinen and Ronnie Crowder

Hometown: Clare, Iowa

Tell me about your dog's personality.
My dog is very outgoing. She absolutely loves people and animals, and loves to show. She's also a very obedient dog. Though she does get very upset when we're showing other dogs. She definitely has some jealousy in her!

What is your dog's favorite treat?
Liver! She loves to eat liver! Though she pretty much eats anything. We'll make her liver as a treat when she's showing. She loves to eat chicken breasts too.

What is your dog's best trick?
She doesn't do any tricks, but she thinks she's a human. She's appalled to think that she's a dog. Many people call her a "pole dancer" because when she's getting ready to go in the ring, she climbs up the grooming arm pole. She always does this!

What's your dog's weirdest quirk?
When we're with other dogs in the ring she gets so jealous that she pouts. She doesn't bark -- she's definitely not a barker -- but she does get very mad. She'll sit there and watch the other dog's every single move. Then when we come back to her, she'll be so mad that won't even look at us for a few minutes!
Several of the dog breeds on the list are known for their hard work in keeping the country safe through border patrol, bomb and narcotics detection and searching for missing persons.

Put your paws together for the Labrador retriever who took the title as the #1 most popular purebred in America for the 19th year in a row.

Bumping the Yorkshire terrier out of the number two spot, the bold German shepherd is now the second most popular dog in the nation for the first time in over 30 years.

"Labs have been America's top dog for nearly two decades due to their loyal and gentle nature," said AKC Spokesperson Lisa Peterson. "But the German Shepherd Dog has gained ground recently, quite possibly due to the increased attention they receive for their security efforts at home and abroad."
Luna, a deaf American bulldog mix, was found and returned to her owners in good health after she escaped her boarding pen at Shaker Veterinary Hospital in Latham, N.Y. on January 2, reports Omidog.com.

When the rescue dog ran away, Ralph and Shelley Rataul feared the worst for the family pet. Shelley posted an $800 reward, which consisted of their money, donations and a contribution from the Veterinary hospital, reports Albany's Times Union.

The 4-year-old dog was found when a couple discovered her in their backyard and recognized her from a story that appeared in the Times Union the previous week. They called the hospital after the frightened dog refused to go into their house.

The couple who found Luna refused both the money and recognition for their good deed. They said they'd like the reward to go to charity instead.

Rataul told the Times Union that half of the money will be donated to the ASPCA and the other half to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society in the name of the couple who found Luna.

While it took a while for Luna to recognize Rataul when he came to the couple's backyard, once she realized it was him, the pooch leaped into the arms of her joyful owner.

"She's not an outdoors dog, not a hunting dog, but some instinctual stuff must have kicked in," Rataul told the Times Union about his dog's survival. Vets said Luna lost about 12 pounds during her nine-day flee.
Continue reading Deaf Dog Returns Home Nine Days After Escaping Hospital

Permalink | Email this | Comments

'Twilight' Star Adopts Two Dogs

Filed under: Dogs, Celebrity Pets, Loss of a Pet

Soon after spending time in the hospital during the "New Moon" premiere, Honey passed away. The grieving star tweeted on December 17, "My heart is simultaneously forever healed and forever broken."

Honey was no stranger to the spotlight either. The rescued pup and her famous owner graced the cover of Modern Dog magazine's Summer 2009 issue.

Lefevre told Modern Dog that her four-legged friend adds to the perspective she tries to maintain as a celebrity. When asked who would play Honey in a movie of her life, Lefevre named Katharine Hepburn. "Katharine seemed so fiercely independent and Honey will cuddle with you, but she is not needy. She wants you to know, 'I'm going to take care of me,'" the "New Moon" actress told the magazine.

On December 30, Lefevre and her boyfriend vowed to honor Honey by rescuing two new pups at the start of the new year.

Sticking to her New Year's resolution, the starlet visited Baldwin Park shelter in California and brought home two new furry additions: Jack Sprat, a miniature poodle mix and Momma Bear, a cocker spaniel.

We hope Momma Bear and Jack Sprat are enjoying their new home!
We all know jury duty is just about impossible to avoid, but what about purr-y duty? An East Boston cat and his family are determined to find out. Sal Esposito, a cat, is expected to show up at Suffolk Superior Court on March 23, reports The National Ledger.

Anna and Guy Esposito, Sal's owners, were stunned when they received Sal's jury summons in the mail, reports MSNBC News. Anna tried to disqualify Sal, but the jury commissioner rejected the appeal.

The couple thinks the issue stemmed from an error on the last census form. Just like any other member of the family, Anna listed Sal under the "pets" section. "I just wrote 'Sal Esposito', scratched out the 'dog,' and wrote, 'cat,'" Anna told MSNBC News.

If the issue isn't resolved by Sal's court date, Anna will have to bring her cat to the jury box to serve his apparent civil responsibility.

Will the feline juror have his own opinions about the case or will he be a copycat?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Paris Hilton Sleeps With a Pig

Filed under: Small Pets, Celebrity Pets

While some think micro-pigs are too high maintenance for pets, Paris Hilton simply keeps her pig in a blanket... in her bed. The heiress revealed that she and her boyfriend, Doug Reinhardt, love to cuddle up with her mini pig in bed, according to the UK's Daily Mail.
"Doug and I will be lying in bed, watching DVDs, and she'll just lie there between us," she told Hello! magazine when she showed off her tiny pig wrapped in a pink blanket during a Christmas photo shoot.
Along with Victoria Beckham, who owns two of the must-have pigs, Hilton helped fuel the micro-pig craze when she purchased Miss Piglette. Hilton's new BFF, who will grow up to be just 14 inches, is the latest addition to the 28-year-old's pack of 13 pets.
Saved by the bark! When Welly the kitten went missing from his home in Swindon, England, his owner, Lorna Hayes, was devastated. But just in time for the holidays, Hayes' neighbors' greyhound mix, Susie, discovered the 11-week-old cat in the bushes. By barking in front of the cat's hiding spot, Susie led Hayes straight to Welly, reports the Swindon Advertiser.

Hayes couldn't believe that her kitty -- who was found curled up and frozen -- survived the cold night. "Susie found my kitten nearly dead in the undergrowth - we were ecstatic because we thought he had been caught by a fox or killed by the cold," Hayes told the Swindon Advertiser.

Hayes believes that Welly may have escaped in a visitor's stroller. She started searching for her missing cat the previous night and continued at 6:30 a.m. the next morning.

The pooch in shining armor began barking when she saw Welly in the bushes the previous night, but she was brought inside to avoid upsetting the neighbors. The next day, Susie returned to the same spot and continued her barking, eventually leading Hayes to the rescue.

"Susie is my saviour," Hayes told the Swindon Advertiser.

While Hayes admits she would normally be mad at her furry troublemaker, she's happy that Welly is alive and well. Since his homecoming, Welly has been staying away from the door.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Top 125 Dogs in American Pop Culture Announced

Filed under: Dogs, AKC Top 125 Dogs

Uga VII died last week due to heart failure.
After the recent death of the University of Georgia's mascot, Uga VII, PETA thinks it's time to do away with real bulldog mascots. Their suggestion? A robotic or costumed mascot.

In an e-mail to the school's Athletic Director, Damon M. Evans, PETA asked the school to stop breeding animals to avoid deadly genetic issues.

"Purebred dogs are prone to countless congenital ailments from years of inbreeding -- every breeder perpetuates these genetic problems for future generations with each litter," PETA said in their e-mail to Evans. "Bulldogs are especially predisposed to breathing difficulties, hip dysplasia, and, as shown in the Uga lineage, heart disorders."

PETA also explains that Uga VII's heart illness was worsened by the pooch's exposure to hot weather and poor ventilation. The dog was four years old when he died.
Ivan Banovic, a Croatian soccer goalie, took a break from protecting his goal to protect a cat who had wandered onto the field at the beginning of a game, reports NPR. After Banovic quickly carried the curious cat to a safe spot under the scoreboard, a referee called a penalty on the goalkeeper for the violation of leaving the field mid-game.

The referee who made the decision was immediately booed, and BBC Sport reports that the crowd -- including the opposing team's fans -- spent the remainder of the game applauding the penalized goalie for his kindness.
Titan the Great Dane has something to really bark about - he's just been named the World's Tallest Dog by the Guinness World Records, reports Sign On San Diego.

At 42.25 inches tall, the 4-year-old dog from San Diego is deaf, epileptic and partly blind, Titan's proud owner Diana Taylor told Sign On San Diego.

Taylor adopted her 190-pound Great Dane in 2005 from a rescue group in Tennessee. "It's not just wonderful for Titan," she told Sign On San Diego. "It's wonderful for all dogs."

Titan replaced previous record-holder Gibson, a Great Dane from Northern California who died earlier this year after fighting bone cancer, the Associated Press reports. Gibson measured a little shorter than Titan, at 42.2 inches.

Taylor plans to throw a party for Titan to celebrate, complete with her dog's favorite treats, but it seems he has already started to rejoice: when Titan heard the news, the pooch slobbered all over his official Guinness certificate, Taylor told Sign On San Diego.
