Before bringing your puppy home, you'll need to "puppy proof" your house. Puppies are like babies: they want to explore every corner of your house, and they want to put everything into their mouths.

Poisonous household items
Make sure all poisonous household items are securely stored out of the puppy's reach.
Place all household cleaners, insecticides, fertilizers, mothballs, antifreeze, insect poisons, rat poisons and other items in cabinets or on high shelves. Remember, as your new puppy grows, he will be able to explore higher places and be tempted to jump up on shelves.

Check your plants
Many plants in and around your house can be harmful to your pup. Did you know that the pits of apricots and peaches, as well as spinach and tomato vines, can make your puppy sick and, in large dosages, can even be fatal? Click here to learn about the plants that should be kept away from your furry companion. For a more complete list of plants that are dangerous to dogs, consult your veterinarian.
Nutro Products is recalling some of its dry cat food.

The voluntary recall includes several varieties of Nutro Natural Choice Complete Care and Nutro Max dry cat foods with "best If used by" dates between May 12, 2010 and August 22, 2010. It does not include canned cat food or any Nutro dog food.

Click here for a complete list of affected Nutro Products.

The cat foods were distributed to stores in all 50 states, as well as in Canada, Mexico, and elsewhere.

Nutro Products, one of the largest pet food manufacturers in the U.S., announced the recall on Thursday after finding a mistake made by its U.S. supplier of mineral premixes. Apparently, two premix batches didn't have enough potassium, and one of those batches had too much zinc.

If you're using one of the recalled products, Nutro advises you stop immediately. While the company says it hasn't received any complaints, it asks that cat owners monitor their cats for symptoms including loss of appetite, weight loss, vomiting or diarrhea.

Unused dry food portions may be returned to your retailer for a full refund or exchange.

For more information on this recall, contact Nutro Products at 1-800-833-5330, or visit www.nutroproducts.com.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Funny Cat Video: Spider-Cat Scales Building

Filed under: Cats, Pets News, Funny Animal Videos
Charlie is surely no scaredy cat.

This gravity-defying, daredevil tomcat can scale the 13-foot wall to his apartment building in Denny, England.

But this claim to fame isn't intentional. Charlie gets locked out a lot.

According to his owner, the seven-year old cat routinely meows to be let outside, then changes his mind and wants to come back in. If no one hears him, Charlie gets impatient and wanders around the back of the building, scales two stories, and pops in through his balcony, The Sun reports.

The British cat has become somewhat of a local celebrity in his hometown, where he's known as "spider-cat."

Cue the stunt music.
All dressed up, and penguins do have a place to go.

For years, zoologists have been trying to figure out where these land-and-sea birds jet off to during their long spells away from home. And now, some French scientists think they've solved the penguin mystery. So where's the secret hideout? The southern Indian Ocean.

A team of scientists from the National Centre for Scientific Research attached tiny monitoring devices (weighing less than an ounce) to the legs of a dozen macaroni penguins just in time for their annual voyage, according to a story on Yahoo! News via the Agence France-Presse.

At the onset of winter, the unsuspecting penguins left the Kerguelen Islands with monitors in tow. The devices tracked location, ambient light and water temperature for six months until the birds returned to Kerguelen to breed.

The birds headed east to the southern Indian Ocean, clocking an average of 8,930 miles during their six months away. 80% of their time was spent between 47 and 49 degrees latitude south, where they gorged on lobsters, shrimps, crabs, and other crustaceans. Come rush hour (the final weeks of migration) the birds covered 1,108 miles in just one month.

This information is priceless to scientists. Macaroni penguins are the most numerous penguin species but their population is thought to be on the decline. Charles-Andre Bost, who led the study, says the findings pinpoint the penguins' key feeding grounds and will help in conservation efforts.
Continue reading The Penguin Files - Study Cracks Penguin Mystery

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Dog to Undergo Sight-Restoring Surgery

Buffy the pup may see her devoted owners again by week's end.

The 11-year-old Maltese will undergo the first ever retinal reattachment surgery in Western Australia this Friday at a private veterinary clinic in Mt. Lawley.

Ophthalmologist Dr. Dimitri Yellachich, his assistant Denise Lomax and veterinary surgeons Robert Harris and Trevor Pavey will re-attach Buffy's retinas during the operation, which could take anywhere from one to five hours. When it's done, Buffy should be able to see again.

"Buffy is a lovely little dog," Dr. Yellachich told Paw Nation. "We are going to do everything we can to make sure the operation is a success."

Not only is this the first surgery of its kind for Western Australia -- it won't cost Buffy's owners a dime.

"I have called upon good will," said Dr. Yellachich. "All the equipment and consumables for this surgery are loaned or donated. It's all coming from the private sector. No Medicare, no public hospital resources will be used." And in keeping with the spirit, the medical professionals and vets have also forgone their fees. "The operation will take place in a private veterinary clinic on our own time," Yellachich said.

Continue reading Dog to Undergo Sight-Restoring Surgery

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Giant Goldfish Caught Near Little Rock

Did your mother ever tell you not to overfeed the goldfish? Someone in Arkansas was definitely not listening.

While fishing on Lake Valencia in Maumelle, Arkansas on May 7, Little Rock firefighter Josh Womack and his friend James Knabe thought the big one they were reeling in was a catfish. But the catch of the day turned out to be a big -- make that enormous -- goldfish.

"We did not weigh it, although now I wish I had, but I estimate the length was around 24 to 28 inches," Womack told the Maumelle Monitor.

Shortly after taking the photo, the guys tossed the fish back in the water.

Clifton Jackson, a fish biologist with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, said the goldfish could likely set a state record, but that he would need to weigh it to know for sure.

And if Womack's 24-to-28-inch guesstimate is correct, the goldfish would be the longest in the world, let alone Arkansas. Since 2003, a goldfish in Hapert, Netherlands has held the title of Longest Goldfish in the Guinness Book of World Records. The Dutch goldfish measures 18.7-inches from snout to tail-fin end; the Arkansas fish is allegedly a half foot bigger.

But fame came be so fleeting. Jackson said that after a cool weather delay, the commission will be restocking Maumelle lakes with catfish as of next week, making it highly unlikely that the goldfish will get hooked again.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Cops Scare Coyotes with Paintballs

Coyotes with splotches of pink fur? It's not your imagination. At least not in Denver.

In response to increasing numbers of coyote sightings near homes, the Greenwood Village Police Department has armed its cops with paintball guns in hopes of humanely pushing the wild animals out of local backyards.

"The city of Greenwood Village has dealt with coyotes for years," Police Lt. "It's never been as bad as it is now."

So far, only one resident has been hurt by a coyote. In December, a teenager was attacked in a town park but was unharmed. Another resident reported a coyote grabbing his Shih Tzu. Sadly, Greenwood Village police discovered a coyote's den with 30 dog and cat collars.

Continue reading Cops Scare Coyotes with Paintballs

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Bringing a New Puppy Home - Tips

They may be small, but new puppies can be big work. So much so, that the second you tell someone you're getting a dog, the advice comes pouring in. "I think you get more advice when you walk down the street with a puppy than you do with a child," says New York-based pet trainer and author, Andrea Arden. We asked Arden for her five top tips for welcoming a new puppy into your home:

1. Get lots of toys
"A puppy, no matter what size, age or breed is going to have a lot of energy," says Arden, who recommends having plenty of toys around the house to keep your pup busy and out of trouble. A toy that can be stuffed with food keeps puppies busy by encouraging them to hunt for their meals, and burns calories at the same time. Arden suggests keeping five to ten toys on hand. Remember, she says, "a nice tired puppy is a wonderful puppy."

2. Create a confinement area
"There's a misconception about crating or confining your pet," says Arden. "It's not cruel. We use confinement to keep pets safe, like we do with children. If you were a visitor at someone's home, you wouldn't want to be set free to explore the home to then be reprimanded for going somewhere or touching something you weren't supposed to. It's the same with your new dog."

Arden advises puppy owners to purchase a crate that's an appropriate size for your pooch to stand up in, lie down, and turn around comfortably. This is meant to be used as a short-term confinement area. If you need to leave your pup alone for a stretch of time, consider an exercise pen - similar to a baby pen. Such pens give puppies more room while keeping them in one place.

Continue reading Bringing a New Puppy Home - Tips

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Funny Animal Video: Grizzly Bears Playing Ice Hockey

Filed under: Exotic Pets, Funny Animal Videos
Ahhh, Russia. Home of borscht, vodka, and... ice skating bears?

Apparently, grizzly bear ice hockey is something of a national past time in Russia. According to a write up in The New York Times, it works much like traditional hockey, replete with sticks, pucks, numbered jerseys, a jam-packed arena, and a (brave) human referee. Admittedly, the bears spend the bulk of their time looking for the regulation-sized puck, which seems downright diminutive beneath their large legs.

This may be news to us, but bears balancing their burly frames on ice skates dates way back to 1962 when the Moscow Circus on Ice played a bear ice hockey game at New York's Madison Square Garden. Watch these grizzlies get all Gretzky on the ice:
She can't hear very well, wears special doggy glasses and sports a sweater on chilly days, but Chanel, a 20-year-old dachshund who lives with her owner in Port Jefferson Station, NY, looks pretty good for her age -- she is, after all, the world's oldest dog. Chanel will set a new record when she turns 21-years-old tomorrow (that's 147 in human years!).

Technically, her title will be official in September - when the Guinness Book of World Records makes it legit. Jay Leno is already banging on her door.

"She's independent. If she didn't want to do something, she had a look she would give, and she usually got her way," Chanel's owner Denice Shaughnessy told the New York Post. The pooch is in the center of a media frenzy, appearing on NBC's TODAY Show this morning. Co-hosts Meredith Vieira and Matt Lauer couldn't stop smiling at the darling dachshund, who's brown hair turned white years ago.

Now that Chanel is turning 21, "She can drink whiskey out of a toilet," joked Vieira.

Playing off Chanel's "wiener dog" breed, Lauer said the dachshund was "the oldest hot dog I've seen since that barbecue at your [Vieira's] place."

Be nice fellas...

Chanel wears glasses because of cataracts, and only eats boiled chicken with whole-wheat pasta because her teeth are so brittle.

But Chanel doesn't let those obstacles keep her at home. "She still enjoys a walk, but now she's carried for a lot of it," said Shaughnessy.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Hero Dog Saves Owners from Mountain Lion

A brave dog was nearly killed by a mountain lion as it defended its owners on a hiking trail in the Santa Ana Mountains on Tuesday.

"Out of nowhere, a mountain lion just charged us, attacked us. When it was discovered that the toddler had wandered out of the house, his mother feared the worst. But at 11 p.m. that evening, Nathaniel was found near a creek about a mile from his home. Dressed in only socks and a t-shirt, he was curled up next to Stanley. Rescuers believe that warmth from the dog's body helped Nathaniel battle the cold and dampness.

Buddy had been trained to assist when his owner Joe Stalnaker exhibited seizure symptoms, but 911 dispatchers were amazed when they heard barking and whimpering at the other end of the line. This was actually old hat for Buddy, who'd done it twice before!

As the economy worsens and folks struggle with finances, more and more pets are being surrendered to animal shelters. But leave it to the Girl Scouts to turn lemons into Lemon Chalet Creme cookies.

Virginia's Girl Scout Troop 173 tabulated their sales of Thin Mints, Tagalongs and other cookie classics, then donated 25 percent of the profits to the Roanoke Valley SPCA Pet Eat Too program, according to The Roanoke Times. The PET program provides pet food to Meals on Wheels and other food pantries.

And over in New Jersey, Troop 792 set out to collect food to help seniors feed their pets. The mission was such a success that the "pet food pantry" at the Hackettstown Senior Center will be holding a second day, according to the Warren Reporter.

So go ahead and stock up on Samoas -- for a good cause, of course!

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Rare Leopard Stolen in Carjacking

Filed under: Exotic Pets, Pets News

A Russian carjacking turned into a catjacking when the SUV's cargo included a rare leopard.

"We had been driving all night with the leopard in a travel cage. The plan was to take her to the vet. The driver was fiddling with the cage when two men jumped into the vehicle and threw us out. My suspicion is the theft was done to order," owner Mikhail Barakin told Britain's The Guardian.

Barakin, who heads a private television station in Saint Petersburg, was grooming the wild cat to star in TV commercials. He said the one-month-old cub -- a rare Amur Leopard -- is tame, but she's also highly endangered: There are less than 45 left on Russia's eastern border.

Barakin says the thieves can keep the car -- all he wants is his leopard back. He is offering a $150,000 reward for her safe return.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Most Common Pet Conditions

You watch your pet closely to make sure he eats right, stays fit, and is healthy and happy. Yet somehow, the poor pup still ends up at the vet with the same dreaded, recurring ear ache.

Frustrating? Definitely. But take heart, it's not just your pup.

Veterinary Pet Insurance, the nation's oldest and largest provider of pet health insurance, looked over last year's medical claims to pinpoint the most common pet maladies.

Ear infections were the most popular ailment among dogs while lower urinary tract disease were the most common in cats. What animal lover hasn't daydreamed about ditching their desk job and applying for a job at the zoo? Or at doggy daycare? Or tracking gorillas in Africa? We sure have, but since most of us may never actually get to work with the animals we love, we thought we'd introduce you to a few people who do.

Name: Kevin Richardson
Age: 34
Job: Animal behaviorist, lion tamer, author and film producer based in South Africa

This amazing shot of you and Meg had animal lovers in a tizzy. When did you start working with lions?
About 11 years ago I met a guy who owned The Lion Park in South Africa. I had the opportunity to go there and met two lion cubs that kind of touched my heart. Next thing I know, 11 years have gone by and I'm still very friendly with these lions Tau and Napoleon. I now work at a facility that I helped set up with one of the owners of The Lion Park called The Kingdom of the White Lion.

Do you have a specialty?
I specialize in indigenous animals -- hyenas, leopards, cheetahs, lions, all of our African predators, really.

How did you train for your job?
There's no book written for it! I think it's something one develops over the years. There's no substitute for experience. You've just got to pioneer things, push the barriers a bit.

A bit?
[Laughs] A bit. You know, a lot of people ask me these things. I don't know how I do it, it just kind of works out.

What is your educational background?
I went to university and studied zoology for two years but got fed up because in zoology, you study a lot of sea creatures -- urchins, microscopic organisms. You don't ever really get to study mammals as one would imagine. I didn't want to spend my life studying a garden snail! I eventually studied physiology and anatomy, and then I went to work on people doing exercise physiology.

And you didn't like working on people?
People were never my first choice. I thought animals would always be a hobby because I had to go get a career. But when you're passionate it's only a matter of time before something comes along that suits that passion. In the back of mind I think I always knew exercise physiology would've bored the hell out of me.

What's the trade-off? Salary?
You're not going to get rich working in this field. I have a really great boss who is equally passionate about the animals. Still, my job is not just a guy who rolls around with lions all day -- I have a busy day and chores. From working with animals to producing a feature film, to starring in documentaries to raising babies to managing a game park. A typical animal keeper in South Africa will earn between R5,000 to R10,000 a month ($550 to $1,100 in US currency).

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Pet Product Review: Camera Offers Pet's Eye View

Filed under: Dogs, Cats, Pet Product Reviews

Does your dog give you that "it wasn't me" face when you shake your mangled shoe at him? Do you find yourself wondering what he could possibly have just eaten in the back corner of the yard?

It's time to get some answers.

The Uncle Milton 1538 Pet's Eye View Digital Camera ($36) attaches to your dog's (or cat's) nylon or flat-belt collar for a full-view of your pet's world.

Or just check out the dog bed.
We know the job market is tough, but this is ridiculous. At the Bronx Zoo, even the animals are losing their jobs.

The Bronx Zoo, the largest metropolitan zoo in the United States, is being forced to pack up and ship out some of its residents. Deer, foxes and porcupines are among the hundreds of creatures being transferred to other zoos across the country.

"We plan to close four exhibits, four areas of the zoo . . . and we will have to reduce our collections in order to handle the cuts that we already know about," Bob Cook, executive vice president of the Wildlife Conservation Society, which runs the zoo, told The New York Post.

The 114-year-old zoo is struggling to cut costs following a $15 million budget shortfall. Australia must not be feeling the effects of the recession.

Luxury pet products company Pets Palace Australia is releasing a new line of sparkling mineral water specifically for dogs. Bellaqua costs $30 per four-pack -- that's over $7 per bottle! -- despite the fact that most dogs are perfectly content to drink from the toilet.

Most of that price tag can be attributed to the packaging: Each bottle of Bellaqua is crafted from handmade crystal, then embellished with white and blue jewels. Because, y'know, dogs are all about the bling.

But Pets Palace Australia stands by their product: "Once upon a time a can of dog food smelled and tasted like, well, chopped liver," Diane Costa, PPA spokeswoman, said in a press release. "Now dogs can dine on 'fresh garden vegetables, slowly cooked with tender lamb chunks in rich gravy'. So why not offer them a decent drink to wash it down with?"

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Dogs and Chocolate - When to Worry

Filed under: Dogs, Pet Health, Animal Nutrition
No responsible dog owner would ever intentionally feed their pup chocolate. But sometimes those furry scalawags sneak the forbidden snack right off the counter or out of your bag. So how do you know if the amount ingested requires a trip to the vet -- or worse, the ER?

Fortunately, this interactive chocolate chart from National Geographic helps you determine your dog's danger zone. Use the cursor to scroll down according to your dog's weight in pounds (or kilograms), then check the color-coded bar on the side to see its dangerous effect. The chart even breaks down the quantities by type of chocolate: white, milk, semi-sweet, dark, baking or cocoa.

For emergency reference, be sure to bookmark the chart. And always be conscious of keeping chocolate out of your dog's reach.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Pigs Hog Camera in New Reality TV Show

Filed under: Exotic Pets, Pets News

Four little hogs are about to be as happy as pigs in... a TV hit.

A new Austrian reality show called Pig Brother will track four piglets living on a family farm in Helfenberg. Lilly, Piggy, Pauli and Freddi will ham it up for the cameras to help promote Austria's third annual "Speck Spectacle" (German for "Bacon Spectacle") in early June. But don't let the translation worry you: No pigs will be harmed in the making of this series.

Our friends over at People Pets report that the show will stay true to reality TV form. The swine will compete in weekly "pig Olympics" and vie to become Super Pig (the show's version of Head of Household). And it wouldn't be the pork version of Big Brother if they weren't filmed 24/7 as they eat from troughs and roll in the mud.

"Pig Brother" premieres April 27th on Austrian TV, but Americans can get updates via their web site -- just be sure to grab a German-English dictionary.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
