What a road trip! The Telegraph is reporting that a four-month-old kitten from Cornwall survived a 20 mile car ride while holding onto the hot engine underneath the car.

The cat, named Lola, was being chased by a dog when she hid under a moving car, reports the Telegraph. Lola's owner, Vicky Rodgers, assumed that her pet had run for safety after hearing the screeching car come to a halt outside of her home. "I heard the screeching of brakes outside and I feared the worst. The driver said to me 'she's under the car', but we couldn't find Lola anywhere," she told the Telegraph.

The driver left, unaware of the extra passenger that was clinging to the hot engine underneath the car. Lola was found three days later at a camp site, with burns on her paws, reports Metro, a newspaper in the UK.

"I can't believe Lola managed to hang on for 20 miles to a hot engine. She's a bit timid, so she must have been absolutely terrified," Rodgers told a Metro reporter.

The kitten was brought to a veterinarian, whom Rodgers had called looking for her lost feline. The veterinarian, Amy Hoddinott, treated the cat for burns on her paws, reports the Telegraph. "She kept lifting the front left paw, which was really badly burned. The other three were only burned slightly," she told the Telegraph. After treatment, the cat was happily reunited with her owner.

Hopefully, the next time Lola goes for a ride she'll be in the car!

Read | Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Watch Wildlife On These Live Webcams

Filed under: Exotic Pets, Animal Sites We Love

Who says you need to trek on a safari or go to the zoo to catch a candid glimpse of animals? Technology is bringing live feeds from web cams all over the world right to your computer screen. Here are Paw Nation's picks for viewing your favorite species.

Pandamonium
With the birth of a new cub and almost twenty different camera angles, the San Diego's Zoo's Panda Cam puts the spotlight on these fuzzy black and white bears. If you get frustrated by their lack of action check out the time lapse video which recaps the bear's activities by day.

For Lion Lovers
The view of this watering hole at the Nkhoro Bush Lodge in South Africa streams live 24 hours a day. People have spotted lions and hyenas while watching the feed. The bonus? It even has night vision so no matter the time difference, you can still see the action. Plus, they have cameras in other locations, which focus on elephants and flamingos.

Peep at Penguins
The Monterey Bay Aquarium has a cool cam installed above their penguin pen. Be sure to tune in at 10:30 am and 3 pm PST, when the birds are fed.

Online Aquarium
The folks at EarthCam joined together with the New England Aquarium to bring you this fishy feed. The featured tank is home to different types of marine life including sharks and sea turtles.

Zootopia
Home of almost 20 different cameras, the Smithsonian National Zoological Park broadcasts from some pretty cool habitats -- everything from an orangutan to an octopus.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Your Dog's IQ: How Clever Is Your Canine?

Filed under: Dogs, Pet Training, Photo Galleries

Ever wonder how smart your dog really is? Is one dog smarter than the other? The truth is that canine intelligence can vary greatly by breed and level of training. The good news? You may be able to improve your pooch's intellect with a few simple steps and commands.

Hounds
Hounds in general do not rank highly in the canine league table for intelligence (the most intelligent is the Norwegian Elkhound). Hounds have a strong tendency to become distracted, in the case of the scent hounds by a passing smell and for sight hounds by some peripheral activity. They must learn to pay attention and concentrate on commands so they can begin to understand them.

Your Dog's IQ / Thunder Bay Press (San Diego)

Pastoral dogs
Some of the most intelligent breeds of dog are included in this group, which covers various Collies and Sheepdogs, Corgis and the Samoyed, among others. If you want to take advantage of their smarts, concentrate on problem-solving tests and games.

Your Dog's IQ / Thunder Bay Press (San Diego)

Terriers
Ten terrier breeds are to be found in the 'above average' rankings for intelligence. These busy little creatures have a tendency to be undisciplined and easily distracted, and one of the most difficult to train is that giant among them, the Airedale. Your terrier's IQ can be improved by emphasizing obedience to commands and insisting that your dog ignore distractions while training.

Your Dog's IQ / Thunder Bay Press (San Diego)

Utility dogs
Utility dogs vary greatly in intelligence. While the Poodle is reckoned to be the second most intelligent dog of all, the Chow Chow and Bulldog are among the four least intelligent breeds.

Your Dog's IQ / Thunder Bay Press (San Diego)

Working dogs
It is crucial and only fair to consider the IQ of the breeds in this group -- which include the Dobermann, Boxer, Great Dane and St Bernard -- in relation to the jobs they were bred to do. Their brainpower is focused mainly on one particular field of activity. Playing games with these dogs that enable them to bring the natural physical and mental abilities of their breed to the fore can enhance their intelligence. For some, their predominant talent lies in some form of visual skill or in thought, as in problem solving. However, it is best not to engage in rougher games such as wrestling or tug o' war with them as their generally dominant nature may release a tendency towards aggression.

Your Dog's IQ / Thunder Bay Press (San Diego)

Toy dogs
These small breeds vary in their level of intelligence, but do not assume that small size means small IQ in a pea-sized brain! Some toy dogs score very highly in intelligence tests, and the Papillon and Pomeranian rank as two of the brightest breeds. The intelligence of this group can be significantly improved by games and tests of thought and skill.

Your Dog's IQ / Thunder Bay Press (San Diego)

Sporting/gundogs
Every one of the 30-plus breeds in this group - which includes all the Spaniels, Pointers and Retrievers, as well as the Weimaraner and Vizsla - is very intelligent and none falls anywhere near the bottom half of the canine IQ rankings. By nature they are sharp, focused and highly obedient - they have to be, in their work as hunters' assistants. As you might expect, these dogs' intelligence can best be promoted by tests and games that involve their innate physical abilities of searching and tracking by sight or scent.

Your Dog's IQ / Thunder Bay Press (San Diego)

Mutts
The principle of hybrid vigor ensures that mongrels tend to be at least as intelligent as their pedigree relations, if not more so. On average, mongrels possess bigger brains than pedigrees: this is either because of genetic expression of that hybrid vigor, or because the more interesting experiences these dogs tend to have from puppyhood onwards, as compared to pampered show-bench types, stimulate the brain literally to grow bigger.
To increase the intelligence of your mongrel, you need to play games and set tests that draw out the innate characteristics of the breeds in his make-up.

Decreased kitten production? Say it isn't so!

The Courier News in New Jersey has reported that Allerca Lifestyle Pets, a company that produces hypoallergenic animals, is citing "decreased kitten production" as the reason they couldn't deliver a very expensive kitty to a New Jersey man.

Now, Andrew Reale is suing the company for a refund of the cat that he never received.

Reale, of Warren, NJ, purchased the feline from the company for $5,950, reports the Courier News. On top of that, he shelled out $1,950 for shipping.

According to the Allerca Lifestyle Pets website, the company produced their first hypoallergenic kitten in 2006 and have over 350 clients. He went on to help capture and train five of the dolphins who played Flipper on the TV series.

With the success of "Flipper," came the popularity of capturing animals for performances at zoos and theme parks. O'Barry now believes that captivity is harmful to dolphins and is fighting for their protection. "I spent ten years building this industry up, and the last forty trying to bring it down," he told Paw Nation.

In "The Cove," O'Barry joins a team of divers, filmmakers and environmentalists to expose the mistreatment and slaughter of dolphins in Japan.

Richard O'Barry first heard about the cove, an area in Taiji, Japan, from fellow colleagues and environmentalists. When he made his own journey to Japan eight years ago, he saw the truth about the dolphins in Taiji and decided he had to help.

Oceanic Preservation Society

Soon, O'Barry discovered that what looked like a town dedicated to preserving the majestic dolphins that surround its area was, in fact, a place with a very dark secret.

Behind fences, signs and barbed wire were dolphins in danger of being hunted for their ability to perform and even more terrifyingly, for their meat.

Oceanic Preservation Society

England's ugly duckling has found a place to call home.

Last week we reported on E.T., a rare Mexican Hairless dog, who was living in a shelter in Essex and having a hard time finding a home. He received a slew of media attention for being one of only 27 Mexican Hairless dogs in all of England. Well, we are happy to announce that E.T. has been adopted!

A spokesperson for Hillside Kennels told Paw Nation that E.T. will be joining his new family on Thursday. Although many of you had suggested in your comments that he be shipped to the U.S. for adoption, his new owners are local so E.T. won't have to travel too far to find his home. Here's hoping his new fam thinks he's as special as all of you did!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Former Couple Has Custody Battle Over Pet Pug

It isn't just kids who get caught in the middle of bitter custody battles.

A pair of New Jersey exes have racked up $40,000 in legal fees as they battle for permanent custody of their pet pug, Dexter, reports the New York Post. Eric Dare, a New Jersey policeman, and Doreen Houseman, a customer-service manager, headed to Salem County Family Court on Wednesday for a third round of legal arguments.

Dare and Houseman ended their thirteen year relationship and engagement in 2006. Since then, the two have been in a tug of war over six-year-old Dexter. Dare, who was originally awarded custody, claims he let Houseman share the pooch with him when they split. Houseman, who had originally sued for custody, appealed the decision, claiming that Dare had given her the dog after they broke up, reports the New York Post.

According to the New York Post, Houseman won her appeal last March, when three appeals judges disagreed with Judge John Tomasello's original ruling, which compared Dexter to a piece of furniture. The decision set a new precedent: that pets have "special subjective" and "sentimental value," which should have been considered in the initial decision.

According to court papers, the appeals process got even more heated when lawyers for the Animal Defense League and Lawyers in Defense of Animals filed paperwork urging the court create a rule "that requires consideration of the best interest of the dog."
Continue reading Former Couple Has Custody Battle Over Pet Pug

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ugliest Dog in England Can't Find a Home

Filed under: Dogs, Pets News, Pet Adoption

There are only 27 Mexican Hairless dogs in the UK. You'll find one of them at an Essex shelter waiting to find a home.

E.T. -- the pooch's bald skin reminded his previous owner of the famous fictional extraterrestrial -- has been living at the Hillside Kennels in Waltham Abbey for months without any interest from adopters. Dawn Fields, who works at the shelter, told the Daily Mail that his owner had to give him up because she already had two dogs and was struggling to care for them.

"When I first saw him I thought, 'Oh my God, what is that? What an ugly b****r.'," she said. "I thought he had a flea allergy because it makes some dogs lose their fur, but then I found out he's supposed to look like that."

Fields says it usually only takes a few weeks for a dog at their shelter to find a home, but E.T., who has hair only on his face and tail, has been living at the shelter for months despite the fact he is worth hundreds of pounds. "We've put him in different kennels to see if that helps," Fields explained. "We put him in the first one people see as they come in, but they hurry on past him. Then we put him in the last kennel, but nothing seems to help."
Continue reading Ugliest Dog in England Can't Find a Home

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Crikey! Even for dogs, there's no place like home! Nine years after Natalie Lampard reported her dog Muffy missing from her backyard in Brisbane, Australia, she was notified that her pooch had been found -- 1,200 miles away!

According to the Associated Press, when officials from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals were called to inspect a home in Melbourne on suspicion of animal cruelty, they found Muffy resting on a scrap of cardboard.

Luckily, Lampard had microchipped Muffy before the dog went missing, so it only took the RSPCA a few days to track down Lampard's current contact information. "When the RSPCA described her, I told them her name; I knew immediately it was our Muffy," Lampard said. "It was totally out of the blue -- after nine years, I thought she was long gone."

According to RSPCA spokesman Tim Pilgrim, the owners of the home in Melbourne claim they found Muffy wandering the streets a year ago. Muffy was removed from the home and has received treatment for a severe allergic reaction to fleas and should be healthy enough to travel home next week.

Lampard's now 17-year-old daughter Chloe, who, according to Lampard had once been inseparable from the pooch, is excited about the impending reunion. "After the RSPCA called, I rang my daughter and asked her if she was sitting down, then told her they'd found Muffy," Lampard said. "She's over the moon and there'll be a few tears shed when they see each other again."

The only question left is how the dog got from Brisbane to Melbourne in the first place. "Nobody knows," Pilgrim said. "The mystery continues for old Muffy."
Look at these love birds! According to People magazine, "True Blood" co-stars Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer stepped away from the world of vampires and shape-shifters to explore their softer sides at Sea World in San Diego this past Sunday. The couple, who are romantically linked on and off screen, spent time cuddling with a feathered friend at the Penguin Encounter attraction.

Paquin, who plays Sookie Stackhouse, a telepathic waitress, and Moyer, who plays vampire Bill Compton, were in town for an appearance at Comic Con, a comic book and popular arts convention. During a diving competition in China, a woman was rescued by an unlikely lifeguard -- a beluga whale!

Twenty-six year old competitive diver Yang Yun was participating in a free diving contest (without breathing equipment) at Polar Land, an animal park dedicated to creatures that live in arctic weather. The event required each diver to sink to the bottom of a 20-foot pool full of beluga whales. But soon enough, Yun realized she was in trouble: the water's freezing temperature had caused cramping in her legs, and she was unable to swim to the surface.

"I began to choke and sank even lower and I thought that was it for me - I was dead," Yun told The Sun. "Until I felt this incredible force under me driving me to the surface."

That force was Mila, one of the park's beluga whales, who used her mouth to pick Yun up by the leg and then swim her to the surface so the diver could emerge for air.

An event organizer noted that Mila spotted the problem before any humans. "She's a sensitive animal who works closely with humans and I think this girl owes her her life."
Somebody should have explained to Kenneth Lang Jr. that "101 Dalmatians" is not a training video. Last week, Lang was found with over 100 Chihuahuas living with him in his Dearborn, Mich. home.

According to the Detroit News, Animal Control officials made the startling discovery last week when they were called to investigate a man suspected of having feral cats. After finding four kittens hiding under a lawnmower, authorities returned with a search warrant and entered Lang's home. Once inside, they discovered approximately 112 Chihuahuas in the house, and far more tragically -- 150 dead Chihuahuas stored in freezers.

Lang's attorney, James Schmiel, says his client has been undergoing an evaluation and that his client suffered from obsessive compulsive disorder. "Given the situation that they were in, these dogs are in good condition," said Schmier. "He would love to have the dogs back even though that doesn't look possible."

Not likely, since Lang and the puppies were found to be living in squalor with "trash, feces and urine throughout the home."

The case is currently considered a criminal investigation based on animal cruelty law which can carry a sentence of up to four years in prison. The Chihuahuas are currently being cared for by the Dearborn Animal Shelter. Although all 112 surviving dogs have been receiving treatments and proper care at the shelter, they are not yet ready for adoption.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
