Many of us dream of working with animals, and still more of us dream about helping animals in need. One lucky couple found a way to do both through their Philadelphia-based pet-sitting business, The Monster Minders.

Getting Started
The Monster Minders began when Carrie Maria placed an ad as a dog walker online while looking at graduate schools five years ago. "It kind of blew up," Carrie tells us, "and two months later, I realized I could make a living walking dogs, and be really happy doing it. So, we [Carrie and her husband, Lindsay] just kind of ran with it, and we now have 18 staff, hundreds of happy clients in Philly, and basically spend all our days hanging out with dogs. It's great!"

The self-proclaimed "accidental entrepreneurs" were blown away to win Philadelphia magazine's Best of Philly, one of the city's most coveted awards, just seven months after starting the company. "We were just gobsmacked. Phone calls started pouring in from tons of people, so that's when we knew we could make a go of it," Carrie says.

And once they knew they could make it in the business, they started looking for ways to give back.

This happens every single time we take our panda cub to the Daily Squee jungle gym. First, he totters around (adorably, of course). Gwen Cooper wasn't looking to add a special-needs pet to her brood when her vet called her well over a decade ago with a story about a blind kitten. In fact, she already had two cats and was reeling from a recent breakup, so adopting another cat wasn't even on her radar.

However, the sightless little kitten changed Cooper's life, even inspiring her to write the best-selling book "Homer's Odyssey," which we interviewed her about in 2009. Now, Cooper is back to chat with Paw Nation about giving a home to a special-needs pet.

Adopting a special-needs pet is intimidating to even the most passionate pet lover. Could you speak to some of the challenges you've faced or adjustments you've made to make things a bit easier on him?
The first thing to remember is that a special-needs pet is still a pet, still capable of loving you and providing you as much joy as any other pet. The only difference between Homer and any other cat I've had is that Homer has forced me to be neater -- I don't want to leave things out for him to trip on. This is arguably a good thing.

Some medical conditions require a lot of extensive care, but if you're talking about some of the more common ones, like blindness, deafness or a missing limb, there's essentially no more dependence than there is with any other pet.

Whoa, mama! Hania, a 4-year-old Great Dane in Poland gave birth to 17 perfect puppies last week, reports The Associated Press.

The pups -- eight male, nine female -- were delivered by Cesarean section in a nearby veterinary clinic at breeder Gabriela Kubalska's request. It was Hania's first litter, and Kubalska wanted to spare her the long labor that delivering such a big brood would entail.

It is truly taking a village to care for all these purebred pups. While Hania is constantly nursing them, another female Great Dane has joined in to help with the feedings, so the puppies stay fat and happy.

Adorable adoptable dogs from the Humane Society of New York rubbed furry elbows with celebrities and were treated to swanky snacks and dog-friendly beer at a St. Pawtrick's Day party. The event was hosted at Kimpton's The Muse New York hotel in conjunction with Wendy Diamond's Animal Fair magazine. Everyday pet owners as well as TV personalities and their dogs were decked out in festive attire, all to benefit the Humane Society of New York.

Guests and their pups were offered green hats, beads and more before stepping in front of the cameras for a photo op. Most were already primped and prepared, as you'll see below, but a few still took advantage of the fun props.

For Cleaning Up Carpeting Mishaps: When we say that the Bissell Spotbot Pet Deep Cleaner saved Christmas for us this past year, it is no exaggeration. Our 60-lb. dog got into something that didn't agree with him and had horrible diarrhea for several days, meaning our carpets took a beating. (Gross, yes, but we know you've been there.) This tool saved us from spending hours (and hours) scrubbing -- you simply put it over the stain, select a setting, turn it on and wait. For small spots or spread-out stains, there's a little hand-held portion, but to be honest, we stick with the main machine. The fact that we can set this down on even set-in stains and walk away, only to come back to a clean section of carpet is still blowing our minds.
