Yes, baby bunnies are the cutest thing ever. Pet stores, feed stores and even some garden-supply shops are filled with rabbits just waiting to land in an Easter basket. But things don't always work out so well once the rabbits come home. According to some estimates, 90 percent of rabbits brought into American homes for the spring holiday will end up euthanized.

Want to keep your new pet from becoming a statistic? Paw Nation checked in with the experts at 3 Bunnies Rabbit Rescue in East Hartford, Conn. to find out what you should consider before you bring home that Easter bunny. Ask yourself these questions:

1. Do you have the room?
"People need to realize a rabbit does need room, does need exercise, does need socialization," says Mona Reopel, co-founder of 3 Bunnies. If you can, opt for an X-pen rather than a cage to allow the rabbit substantial space.

2. Are you able and willing to rabbit-proof your home?
Rabbits can be litter trained and allowed to roam around the house like a cat or dog, but it's their natural instinct to chew. Reopel warns that computer cords, TV cables and even table legs are easy pickings for your rabbit.

3. Do you have any allergies?
Rabbits need hay 24 hours a day, and that means its constant presence in your home. While most pet owners think of dander as the number one-allergen -- and dander allergies can be triggered by a rabbit -- Reopel reports the larger concern for most families is asthma and seasonal-type allergies that might be spiked by the hay.

You're not the only ones who fell head over paws for those delectable Shiba Inus bouncing around in front of a Web cam 24 hours a day, seven days a week back in 2008.

The award-winning cam has been joined by hundreds of other pups vying for your hearts at live broadcast site UStream. Largely in the homes of breeders, some of the cams are being used to market puppies to potential owners, some to allow would-be owners to track their new friends from birth until the day they can come home, and still more to open up the breeding process to ensure transparency in all that happens during a puppy's life.

As Ed Pelto -- owner of Olde English Bulldogges in Woodbury, Minn. and the person behind the Pelto Bulldogges Puppy Cam -- explains to Paw Nation, avoiding a puppy mill is a lot easier when you can watch every moment of a dog's life live on your computer.

"There's no hiding anything here," Pelto says. "With all the controversy, all the news and with these cams, how people still end up buying from puppy mills, I just don't understand."

But there's a lot more to puppy cams than just folks looking to weed out the bad breeders. As Pelto says with a laugh, "Everybody loves puppies, don't they?"

They love them enough to have pushed the Shiba Inus to the People's Voice Award winner in the Viral category for the 13th Annual Webby Awards. And they love them enough that animal owners have been putting their pups on camera far before those balls of fur made for a frenzy.
Continue reading The Stories Behind Those Crazy-Cute Puppy Cams

Permalink | Email this | Comments

I Work With Animals: Tracker Who Finds Lost Pets

Filed under: I Work With Animals!

What animal lover hasn't daydreamed about ditching their desk job and applying for a job at the zoo? Or at a doggy daycare? Or tracking gorillas in Africa? We sure have, but since most of us may never actually get to work with the animals we love, we thought we'd introduce you to a few people who do.

Name: Laura Totis

Age: 47

Title: Pet tracker and owner of LJT Pet Tracking and LJT Training

How long have you been tracking pets?
I started officially doing it back in 2002.

Describe what a pet tracker does.
For the most part we can help people find their pets just with a phone consultation or some Internet advice. Making posters, figuring out the logistics, what exactly happened with the animal missing, some personality factors that would affect what may help or hinder recovering the pet. We sometimes end up bringing in a search dog but that's just one little tool in the whole process. If we do that, then we need an article that smells like the animal so we can tell the dog what we're looking for.

Do you generally track in a suburban, city or rural setting?
Sadly, animals are lost in all kinds of settings. I've had searches in New York City, and I've had searches out in wilderness parks.
Weighing in at over forty pounds, this English rabbit might just be the biggest bunny the world has ever seen.

Ralph, a Continental Giant rabbit, eats about $15 worth of food a day, says his owner Pauline Grant. The bunny consumes Weetabix cereal, crackers, apples, carrots, cabbages, toast, sweetcorn and huge bowls of rabbit food. Grant told the U.K's Sky News that she's still awaiting official confirmation of his stats, but she's hoping he will make it into the Guinness Book of World Records.

If his size is confirmed at 42 pounds and 4 feet in length, he'll knock his own mother out of the record books. According to the folks at Guinness, Ralph's dam, Amy, was listed in 2008 as the world's longest rabbit" at 2 feet, 8 inches.

Known for being a larger breed than most, Continental Giants typically weigh between 12 and 16 pounds. The minimum length of a show rabbit is 25.5 inches.

As long as Ralph continues with his voracious appetite, Grant says she'll keep feeding him. How long do you think this record will last?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

SeaWorld Tragedy Claims Orca Trainer

A tragedy that claimed the life of one of SeaWorld Orlando's animal trainers Wednesday has shut down the popular "Believe" shows and "Dine with Shamu" experiences at all SeaWorld locations indefinitely.

According to details released by SeaWorld to CNN, Dawn Brancheau, 40, had just completed a session with killer whale Tilikum in front of a crowd at the Orlando theme park. Although she was standing outside the pool, Brancheau's long blonde ponytail was in reach of the whale, who grabbed it in his mouth and pulled her underwater.

Cited as one of the park's "most experienced animal trainers" in a letter posted by SeaWorld CEO Jim Atchison on the company Web site, Brancheau had always dreamed of working at SeaWorld, In an interview with Brancheau's mother, the New York Daily News reports that the trainer had fallen in love with killer whales 29 years before on a family vacation at SeaWorld and said "I wanna be a Shamu trainer." She'd worked at SeaWorld since 1994, with the orcas since 1996, putting on frequent shows for the public.

Tragedies like these make it clear that although theme parks are an amazing way for us to interact with and better appreciate these fascinating animals, there are serious dangers and concerns about keeping wild animals in captivity.

Brancheau's death is still under investigation, although park officials have confirmed she was held under water for an "extended period of time," and witnesses told CNN affiliates they saw Tilikum violently shaking the trainer's body, forcing her shoe to fly off.
Continue reading SeaWorld Tragedy Claims Orca Trainer

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Animal Blood Banks: Pets Saving Other Pets

You never want to imagine your dog or cat needing a blood transfusion - but there is one group of people working to make sure your pet is covered. They're the folks at animal blood banks scattered throughout the country, a group that likens itself to the Red Cross -- but for pets.

"We do everything the same way," explains W. Jean Dodds, D.V.M., president of Hemopet, the only national non-profit animal blood bank. Blood is taken, typed and stored for shipment to veterinarians across the country. At local clinics this blood supply is put into animals who've lost blood from injuries or is pumped into dogs during surgery. It is also used to treat a host of diseases from anemia to Von Willebrand's (a hemophilia relatively common in canines).

Blood is also ordered by some breeders to be used for puppies whose mothers have died or who are in dire straits, but most blood banks deal strictly with vets.

The goal, according to Debbie Sweany, manager of the Veterinarian's Blood Bank in Southern Indiana, is to ensure the veterinarians have enough blood to serve all their needs. Large 24-hour veterinary clinics in major cities are their number-one clients, but small country vets make orders too -- and they're responsive to the needs of their patients. If a cat is going through cancer treatments, for example, it may need frequent transfusions, and vets will order enough to keep up with that demand.
Continue reading Animal Blood Banks: Pets Saving Other Pets

Permalink | Email this | Comments

New Chastity Belt For Dogs

 PABS For Pets

Preventing pregnancy in an unspayed dog is a huge challenge -- that is, unless your dog is wearing her chastity belt.

Yes, a chastity belt. It sounds medieval - and there is some metal mesh in the construction of the Pet Anti-Breeding System (PABS) -- but dog trainer and inventor Dexter Blanch tells Paw Nation he's just keeping up with the needs of dog owners' today. Made to buckle on the rear end of a female dog in heat, the PABS allows her to get rid of waste but blocks an interested male dog from making too close a connection.

We talked to Blanch from his home in Shreveport, La. to find out more about his "holistic" approach to preventing pooch pregnancies:

When we heard about this, we laughed, but it sounds like it could work.
That's everybody's reaction, and actually I can understand it, really.

How did you come up with the PABS idea?
I've been a dog trainer for 41 years and I knew it was a needed product. But it really hit me one day when I was hunting with one of my registered female dogs and we came across a bunch of male dogs. She was a young dog and was learning so I needed to keep her in the field but her heat cycle came at the wrong time, and I was like, wow, suppose something were to happen.
Continue reading New Chastity Belt For Dogs

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Keeping Your Cat's Teeth Clean and Healthy

They need them to eat, to protect themselves, yet for seven out of ten cats, teeth troubles begin by the time they are three.

The key to healthy feline teeth is regular at home and professional cleaning but many well-meaning pet owners don't know how important this is. And it's not completely their fault. "Most veterinarians don't address dental health in cats," says Dr. Michel Selmer, veterinarian at Advanced Animal Care Center in Huntington Station, N.Y. A vocal advocate for the importance of dental health in pets, Selmer devotes 20 percent of his practice to oral issues.

In honor of Pet Dental Health Month -- and for the sake of 70 percent of American kitties -- Paw Nation asked Selmer for tips on how to keep your cat's mouth in good shape.

The process starts when they're kittens, with pet owners using a finger cot or gauze and toothpaste made specifically for them. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) recommends dipping your finger in tuna water before rubbing it on your kitty's gums to make the experience more pleasant. If you're uncomfortable, or you have just adopted an older cat who won't stomach your finger in his mouth, a once-yearly cleaning at the vet's office is recommended by the AVMA, beginning after a cat turns two.
Continue reading Keeping Your Cat's Teeth Clean and Healthy

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Top Reasons Dogs and Cats Visit the Vet

Your dog's ears may be better at hearing than yours will ever be --- but taking care of them comes at a price.

According to an evaluation of veterinary claims filed with the Veterinary Pet Insurance Co. (VPI), canine ear infections were the leading cause of vet visits in the United States. In 2009 alone, VPI -- the company that insures almost half a million American pets -- received about 68,000 claims for ear related vet visits. The average cost per visit was $100.

Also among the company's top reasons for doggie vet visits were skin allergies at number two, followed by skin infection/hot spots, gastritis/vomiting and enteritis/diarrhea.

In cats, lower urinary tract disease was the most common concern -- the VPI counted 3,700 claims for cats with urinary issues, costing their owners an average of $260 a visit. The other common reasons felines went to the vet included gastritis/vomiting in the number two spot, followed by chronic renal failure, hyperthyroidism and diabetes.
Continue reading Top Reasons Dogs and Cats Visit the Vet

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Top Dog Names for 2010 and Beyond

Fido, your old-school name is old news. The same goes for Rover and Spot. Our (two-legged) friends at the Daily Beast say that a new batch of trendy and celeb-inspired monikers are about to be all the rage at the dog park.

In the run up to Westminster, they called on a name expert to predict the popular tags we will be choosing for our new pooches in 2010 and beyond. The name Casey came in at number one as a generally friendly name that's equally appropriate for male and female dogs. Vampire obsessed Twi-hards will be sparkling at the news that heroine Bella is being honored with the number three spot, while fans of the kiddie hit "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" have driven Chloe, its main character's name, to the perfectly respectable number nine position.
A Rhode Island man who performed surgery on his own dog to remove a cyst on the aging Lab mix's leg is facing animal cruelty charges. So why does Alan MacQuattie blame it all on the economy?

The Vietnam vet told TV station WPRI he didn't have the money to pay a vet for the dog's care, but he didn't want 14-year-old Nakita to suffer. Using what he says was training from the Army, MacQuattie injected the dog with Lanacane to numb her pain and got to work removing a cyst on her hind leg.

When animal control and representatives of the Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RISPCA) received reports of the at-home surgery, they showed up at MacQuattie's Barrington home and found Nakita with a wound on her right leg. The group's chief doctor told WPRI "poverty is no excuse" for what MacQuattie did.

The dog was taken to a local animal hospital where a second surgery was performed, while MacQuattie has pled no contest to charges of unnecessary cruelty to animals and unauthorized practice of veterinary medicine. But he maintains what he did was the humane thing -- and animal control has allowed him to have his best friend back.

Estimates from Consumer Reports put the average cost of a vet visit for an older dog or cat at $340, but there are options out there for pet owners suffering in this ailing economy. The Humane Society of the United States maintains a list of organizations that offer everything from pet-food assistance to offsetting medical bills.

Some veterinary schools also run low-cost clinics for pet owners. Check with the American Veterinary Medicine Association for one near you.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Study Says Cat Owners Are Smarter Than Dog Owners

A new study out of Britain is bound to make the fur fly. Researchers claim to have proven that cat owners rule -- and dog owners? Well, they don't drool exactly, they're just not as bright as the cat owners.

In a large-scale study aimed at tracking the type of domesticated animals Brits preffered, The Daily Mail reports that that cat owners were found to be generally smarter than their canine-loving counterparts. The study results showed that those with college degrees (aka the "smarter" folks) were 36 percent more likely to have a cat living in the house than those without degrees. Some speculate this is because the university graduates were more likely to work long hours, and chose cats because they are lower-maintenance than dogs.

But before you dog owners get riled up, you should know that in other recent research you've come out ahead -- cat people were found to be more likely to be neurotic, while dog people were found to have a conscientious and agreeable nature.

The big question is: where does that leave people who own both cats and dogs? Are they in the "smarter" category or the "dumber" group? Kathy Steuber, the owner of a chocolate labradoodle named Finley and two rescued cats named Frady and Phoebe, has an alternate answer - she believes that at times, her pets may be smarter than she is. "I'm outnumbered by my furry friends, and sometimes they do gang up on me!"

Here's yet another sign that the economy has gone to the dogs: A thief in New York City held up a West Highland white terrier this week and made off with the pooch's parka.

With a snowstorm set to wallop the New York metro area, the New York Post reports 10-year-old Lexie was tied outside the Ace Supermarket in Park Slope, Brooklyn while Lexie's owner Donna McPherson ran in to quickly buy some milk. When McPherson came out from the store, she found her white Westie shivering in the cold without his wool jacket. She canvassed the neighborhood looking for clues to who could have done this, but so far no luck.

Despite their double coat, Westies are used to spending much of their time inside near their owners, making it harder for them to tolerate the cold. The American Kennel Club recommends dogs with coarse coats -- including Westies -- wear a sweater when they're out and about in the winter. With temperatures in the 30s in New York City this week, the missing sweater meant Lexie was one cold canine.

McPherson is still hoping to catch the criminal, but she's happy it was a $25 coat that went missing and not her priceless best friend. West Highland pups can be found on Puppy Find at anywhere from $200 to $875, although demand for older pups like Lexie is low.

McPherson gave two new coats to Lexie to make up for the mugging. By the looks of the forecast for the Northeast this week, he's going to need them.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Cat's Escape Earns Homeowner $1,100 Ticket

 Connie Osborne

Connie Osborne thought microchipping her cat, Griffon, would protect her kids from the heartbreak of losing their kitty if he ever escaped. And it did. It also earned the North Las Vegas, Nev. family a ticket for $1,100.

The Siamese mix snuck out of the house the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, Osborne tells Paw Nation, and by the time the family realized he was gone, everything had shut down for the holiday. So it was a major relief two days later when Osborne received a call from microchip company HomeAgain. Griffon was safe and sound at the animal shelter across town. He'd been picked up by animal control less than a block from her house.

Osborne arrived at the shelter with a cell phone picture to prove Griffon was hers, along with her microchip paperwork. They told her she'd have to pay $55, a charge that covered the cost of his overnight stay, some vaccinations automatically performed at the shelter and a $25 fee for animal control having to pick him up. All of those fees were understandable. But then she was told that she needed to speak with animal control at the police station where she was given a ticket for allowing her cat to get out.
"At that point I was thinking, 'I'm a good citizen, I'll sign the ticket,'" Osborne admits. "When I actually looked at it the next day, I broke down in tears." The city of North Las Vegas had fined her $1,132, and when she called animal control hoping it was a mistake, they told her that was the standard fee.
Continue reading Cat's Escape Earns Homeowner $1,100 Ticket

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Amanda Seyfried Is In Love -- With Her New Puppy

The star of "Dear John" has a new guy in her life -- and its serious. "He's the love of my life," Seyfried says.

The lucky fella is an Australian shepherd puppy named Finn, Seyfried revealed on Unscripted. "He's a little guy with a big heart," the actress told her "Dear John" co-star Channing Tatum during a chat about the film and their personal lives.

He won't stay little for long. Male Aussie shepherds traditionally grow to about 20 to 23 inches tall, according to the AKC. Seyfried is expecting him to be at least 50 pounds, at which points she admits she won't be able to pick him up.

The highly intelligent dogs are known for being especially attached to their owners, so maybe it's good that Seyfried is slated to have time opening up in her schedule for some one-on-one with her favorite pup? The "Big Love" star is confirmed to be leaving the HBO series sometime this season.
