Miller is suspected of killing his wife and daughters earlier this month. On the run, he has been one step ahead of authorities pursuing him. But detectives have located Gigi, who was being cared for by a woman who says two hikers found the dog before she agreed to care for her.

"It would be greatly beneficial to this investigation and the search for Shane Miller if the location Gigi was originally was found at was known," said Humboldt County Sheriff's Lt. Dave Morey.

Morey said that because Dachshunds have such short legs, Gigi couldn't have traveled far from where she was abandoned. Knowing where that was would allow detectives to narrow the scope of their search for Miller.

Unfortunately, the woman who was taking care of Gigi did not exchange names or contact information with the hikers that she says found the dog, so their identities remain unknown. Humboldt and Shasta County Detectives hope the hikers will contact them at the following numbers: Shasta County (530-245-6025) or Humboldt County (707-445-7251).

Gigi was found healthy and uninjured. She remains in the care of the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office.

    It's a cat owner's nightmare to find a beloved pet's body on the side of a road, killed by a passing car. Karen Jones of Kent, U.K., experienced that dreaded day when she and her family found the body of what they took to be their cat, Norman.

    "I hadn't seen Norman all morning, because he often goes roaming around," said Jones. "So I had a feeling it was him when I saw the cat by the side of the road."

    It was a fate Jones always thought was inevitable for her scrappy outdoor cat. Norman had been known to get into fights with other cats, and last year he came home one day with a broken leg.

    The family brought Norman's body home with them to honor the cat with a proper funeral. Jones' 22-year-old son Harry spent hours digging a grave, and the body was interred with Norman's favorite toy mouse. As a final touch, the family placed a porcelain cat figurine on the ground to mark the grave site.

    Jones naturally thought the cat funeral marked the end of her time with Norman, so it gave her quite a surprise then next morning when he bounded into her kitchen as usual, ready for breakfast.

    Jones went outside to see if the cat had emerged from the fresh grave, but she found it intact. Norman wasn't a zombie, then, and clearly he wasn't dead. Jones realized she and her family had buried some other cat, one they didn't know.

    "It was exactly the same size, same color and had the same face," Jones said of the dead cat, comparing it to Norman.

    Next: Loyal Dog Watches Over Owner's Grave

    The family celebrated Norman's "return from the dead" with an equal degree of ceremony as they displayed for his burial. Jones' brother even wrote and performed a song called "It Is the Day of Norman's Rising."

    Jones' relief is tempered by the knowledge that what may be someone else's pet has died and the person doesn't know it. She has tried to find the owner of the buried cat.

    But mostly, Jones and her family are happy to have more time with Norman. "The whole family is just delighted he is home," she said.

The photo was taken by someone who fosters dogs for the shelter we support and I noticed the donkeys were in very poor condition, so I contacted the person who posted it for more information. He explained that the owner of the donkeys was a drunk who had threatened people who attempted to rescue the donkeys before with an axe and a knife, as well as a massive dog.

He also told me that there was a third donkey who got hit by a car and while still alive, the owner came to cut its throat with a knife as he refused to have the vet come and tend to the poor donkey. I felt I had no choice but to put the donkeys out of my mind as I couldn't expect anyone to risk their own life to help them.

A few weeks later, I was in Serbia with others from the Forgotten Paws team as well as founders of Happy Endings Sanctuary. I told them about the donkeys and their crazy owner and together we decided we should go and see them in person.

With the help of our Serbian friends we found the mother and foal. The mother was tethered with no shade or available water. The daughter stayed with her. They were very sweet and gentle and enjoyed the attention but looked incredibly sad. From the river nearby, we brought two buckets of water to the mother who eagerly drank them.

The daughter was overall in okay condition, unlike her mother whose feet had not seen a farrier for years. The foal wasn't tethered, so could walk about and get a drink from the river. The older donkey's feet resembled peasant shoes and curled upwards. The poor girl couldn't walk properly. Both of them had a million burrs in their coats and their hair had fallen out where they both had rope around their necks.Immediately we knew we couldn't walk away. We had to help the donkeys. After speaking to the locals, we found out that the mother donkey has been there for at least five years! How she survived, we don't know. The temperatures in Serbia go into -20 degrees in winter and she had no shelter.

We left the donkeys and went away planning where to put them and how to get the owner to give them up. With the help of Zoo Planeta in Serbia, we found a lovely family who would foster the donkeys, but we would be responsible for all their costs from feed to the farrier. Now we just had to deal with the owner.

After many phone calls, eventually we reached an agreement. The man would sell us the donkeys for 300 euros and sign a contract with witnesses stating that the donkeys had been sold to us. As much as we did not want to give him the money, that was the only way these donkeys could be saved, so the five of us put our personal money together and became responsible for the two neglected hairy beasts!

We couldn't wait to get the donkeys to their foster home. For the first time in years, these donkeys will receive care and attention as well as be fed and watered appropriately. The farrier has been booked as well as the vet for their overall health check up, vaccinations and deworming.

Smith discovered a dog and kitten snuggled up together in a ravine. It was clear that the dog had been nursing the kitten, treating it as her very own.

Smith believes that the dog could have walked down the hill by herself, but thinks that it just "couldn't get back up with the kitten, and I don't think it was willing to leave the kitten."

PAWS animal rescue has decided to keep the two together. They believe that the dog is at least 5 years old and that the kitten is just a few weeks old. According to Smith, the dog has been nursing, tending and cleaning the kitten. The dog is most likely going through pseudo-pregnancy to produce milk, but doesn't have enough to provide for the kitten properly.

The dog seems to be a pet, so PAWS will give its owner 14 days to claim her. If no one does, the pair will be put up for adoption.

The study, published in the journal PLoS ONE, is the first report of the virus H1N1 in any marine mammal.

Researchers are now being advised to wear protective personal gear when working around marine mammals, to avoid the possibility of infection.

"H1N1 was circulating in humans in 2009," lead author Tracey Goldstein said in a press release. "The seals on land in early 2010 tested negative before they went to sea, but when they returned from sea in spring 2010, they tested positive. So the question is where did it come from?"



"We thought we might find influenza viruses, which have been found before in marine mammals, but we did not expect to find pandemic H1N1," said Goldstein, an associate professor at the University of California at Davis. "This shows influenza viruses can move among species."

Goldstein and other UC Davis researchers have been studying flu viruses in wild birds and mammals since 2007. For this study, they tested nasal swabs from more than 900 marine mammals from 10 different species off the Pacific Coast from Alaska to California.

They detected H1N1 infection in two northern elephant seals and antibodies to the virus in an additional 28 elephant seals, indicating more widespread exposure. Neither infected seal appeared to be ill, indicating marine mammals may be infected without showing clinical signs of illness.

"The study of influenza virus infections in unusual hosts, such as elephant seals," said co-author Adolfo Garcia-Sastre, "is likely to provide us with clues to understand the ability of influenza virus to jump from one host to another and initiate pandemics."

A Reddit user posted a photo of Hero and his owner, Bridget Evans, at their graduation ceremony. The Redditor wrote, "One of the graduates today had her service dog with her who was also in a cap and gown."

Evans saw the photo and identified herself, sharing another photo of herself and Hero in their academic dress.

Evans, who uses a wheelchair, offered more information about Hero, saying he knows more than 40 commands to assist her. "He loves to retrieve objects for me, like envelopes, pens, my crutches, etc. He also turns off the lights, opens doors, and he pulls me in my wheelchair up ramps! I couldn't have gone to college without him," Evans said. She added that Hero enjoyed the ceremony and all the attention he received, pausing for pictures with other graduates "every 10 feet."

Evans said she and Hero both earned their master's degrees. She is the founder of Illini Service Dogs, a service-dog program based at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign since 2010. The service allows college students to train service dogs from puppyhood to placement, and offers the dogs free of charge to people with disabilities.

    Why do cat owners not seek regular veterinary care for their cats? In many cases, it may be because they simply don't understand the importance of these visits for their feline friend. Cats are masters of disguise when it comes to hiding the signs of illness. The early symptoms of disease are often subtle and difficult to notice. Especially for older cats, these signs may even be mistaken for "old age". Your veterinarian is trained to look for signs of disease that may not be readily identifiable by the average pet owner. Early intervention of any disease or health condition that your cat may develop can lead to a more successful treatment outcome. In some cases, this may even prolong your cat's life.

    Other times, the hassle of getting the cat to the veterinarian may be the reason for not visiting. Conditioning your cat to his carrier before the trip to the veterinarian can help.

    2. Assuming indoor cats can't get fleas and other parasites

    This is a common misconception. Cat owners frequently (and mistakenly) believe that because their cat lives indoors fleas and other parasites cannot become a problem. Too often, cat owners believe that parasite prevention is unnecessary for their indoor cat. Unfortunately, this is far from the truth. Fleas can find their way indoors very easily, hitch-hiking on your clothing or on a dog that does go outdoors, or finding their way through tiny openings in screens and doors. In addition, intestinal parasites like tapeworms and roundworms can be a problem as well. Mosquitoes can find their way indoors also, potentially exposing your cat to heartworms.     4. Assuming hairballs are normal

     An occasional hairball is not unusual. However, frequent vomiting (with or without hairballs in the vomit), coughing, or gagging is not normal and may indicate that there are health problems other than hairballs. If your cat is displaying these types of symptoms, your cat should be examined by a veterinarian.

Unfortunately, these labels are often misleading. Products with these labels may have been tested by other companies, in other countries, at the ingredient level or at certain stages of development making it confusing for consumers who can be duped into thinking they're supporting an ethical product when they are not.

CHOICE, a consumer watchdog organization based in Australia, conducted an investigation and found that many companies are testing their products on animals without telling their customers.

Investigators examined 55 company websites and found that 40 percent claimed that they or their parent companies did not test on animals, but only a few had any certification from an independent third-party.

They also posed as shoppers and found that many sales people behind the counters at major cosmetics brands, including Lancome and Dior, had no idea whether animal testing was conducted and found that some falsely led shoppers to believe it had not been. One informed them that animal testing was banned around the world. Others were unaware of China's animal testing requirements.

"Cosmetic brands need to be upfront about their animal testing whether it be on their websites, packaging or via employees at cosmetic counters. They are bound by law to give consumers the correct information and we have found many of them are not. CHOICE will be referring this issue to the ACCC [Australian Competition and Consumer Commission]," said CHOICE researcher Zoya Sheftalovich.

The ACCC can take the companies to court, ask them to change their advertising material, or impose a penalty notice on them, reports The Australian.

"Companies should be telling consumers the truth on their labels and on their websites, and properly training their sales staff. Australian consumers who oppose animal testing of cosmetics should be able to make informed decisions about which products to purchase, and this ability is being compromised across the board," said Sheftalovich.

Unfortunately, the problem isn't confined to Australia. Other major companies have come under fire for claiming they don't test on animals, but have expanded into China where animal testing, including skin and eye irritation tests, is required without telling their customers. Last year Avon, Estee Lauder and Mary Kay found themselves involved in a class action suit for falsely claiming their products were "cruelty-free."

Urban Decay was another company that decided not to expand into China after taking some major heat from its loyal customers who love its products because they're cruelty-free.

Ethical companies that say they don't test on animals don't test themselves, or work with suppliers who do it for them. They should also have independent third-party certification.

The Leaping Bunny program requires companies that carry its signature leaping bunny logo to pledge not to test on animals at any stage of development and remain open to independent audits in order to stay certified. The program is managed by the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics (CCIC) in the U.S. and Canada, while the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection manages it in the UK and the European Coalition to End Animal Experiments manages it in Europe.

Finding products with its signature logo is easier than ever and choosing them sends a message to companies who refuse to give up animal testing.

David Raichlen of the University of Arizona and his colleagues wrote that "a neurobiological reward for endurance exercise may explain why humans and other cursorial mammals habitually engage in aerobic exercise despite the higher associated energy costs and injury risks, and why non-cursorial mammals avoid such locomotor behaviors."

In short, we're fools for exercise because it can feel good.

Raichlen and his team made the determination after studying endocannabinoids that circulate throughout the body. If the word reminds you of cannabis then you're not too far off, since these are the same chemicals found in marijuana. They function as neurotransmitters, affecting the brain by sending reward signals to it.

The study looked at humans, dogs and ferrets. Dogs are considered to be cursorial animals, meaning that they have legs adapted for running. While ferrets can speedily skittle around, they are non-cursorial.

After working out on a treadmill, the people and dogs in the study had "significantly increased exercise-induced endocannabinoid signaling following high-intensity endurance running."

The ferrets didn't feel bupkis, except for perhaps being tired.

Humans and dogs, on the other hand, both likely experienced runner's high. While the study didn't involve cats, felines are cursorial animals too. It's therefore very likely that they get the runner's buzz as well.

Jogging with your dog and taking your cat out for a brisk walk on a leash are activities that can benefit both you and your furry friends. Keep at it, because you have to reach a certain threshold of aerobic activity before the high feeling kicks in.

The Postal Service creed says that postal workers won't be stopped by snow, rain, heat or gloom of night, but it says nothing about dogs. "If our letter carriers deem your loose dog to be a threat, you'll be asked to pick up your mail at the post office until it's safe to deliver," said Ken Snavely, acting postmaster of Los Angeles. He added that dogs that roam the streets freely could affect delivery to entire neighborhoods.

Of course, letter carriers aren't the only ones attacked by dogs. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, dogs bite 4.7 million Americans every year, and more than half of the victims are children. The Postal Service participates in Dog Bite Prevention week (May 19-25) to educate the public about dog bites and how to avoid them.

The Postal Service and other partners in National Dog Bite Prevention Week offer the following tips for avoiding dog attacks:

-Never leave a baby or small child alone with a dog.
-Don't run past a dog. The dog's natural instinct is to chase and catch you.
-If a dog threatens you, don't scream. Avoid eye contact. Try to remain motionless until the dog leaves, then back away slowly until the dog is out of sight.
-Never approach a strange dog, especially one that's tethered or confined.
-Don't disturb a dog that is sleeping, eating or caring for puppies.
-Anyone wanting to pet a dog should first obtain permission from the owner.
-Always let a dog see and sniff you before petting the animal.
-If you believe a dog is about to attack you, try to place something between yourself and the dog, such as a backpack or a bicycle.
-If you are knocked down by a dog, curl into a ball and protect your face with your hands.

    It's not an everyday occurrence, but someday you may stumble upon injured or abandoned wildlife in your own backyard. It may be a baby bird who fell from a tree, or a squirrel who seems dazed and confused. Your instinct will probably be to use your limited resources to assist in any way you can when you find a wild animal, but you probably won't know just what to do. We'll tell you when to get hands-on, when to leave well enough alone and when to call in the professionals if you find a wild animal in need.

     WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND A BABY BIRD

    There is a widely believed old wives' tale that says if you find a baby bird, you must not touch it or it will be forever rejected by its mother. This is false, but there is a kernel of truth to it, and like a lot of white lies told to children, it was probably concocted with good intentions. If you find a baby bird, the best thing to do probably is, in fact, to leave it alone. First of all, it's relatively common for fledgeling birds to wind up on the ground before they master flight. Second of all, a grounded baby bird's mother is probably near and aware of the situation, but is staying away due to human presence (i.e., you). You should, however, determine if a baby bird you find is a fledgling or a nestling. A nestling is a particularly young bird who still has fuzzy fur instead of feathers. If you find a nestling on the ground, you should try to locate its nest and replace it there. If you can't find the nest or it's destroyed, improvise a nest made from a small basket or plastic tub lined with paper towels or pine needles. Leave the nestling in the makeshift nest for its parents to find. Whether you find a nestling or a fledgling, keep your pet cats and dogs indoors and away from the baby bird. (Snopes)

    WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND A SQUIRREL

    If you find what you believe to be an injured squirrel, try to confirm signs of injury. If it seems dizzy or dazed, is walking in circle and/or is bleeding, it may have suffered head trauma from a fall, an attack, being hit by a car, etc. Don't try to handle the squirrel with bare hands, but wear thick gloves and try to scoop it up by covering it with a towel. Be very gentle. Place the squirrel in a box or cage with a t-shirt or other soft material for bedding to keep it safe, and call a wildlife rehabilitator as soon as possible. If the squirrel is a baby and seems unhurt, leave it in its place for the time being and observe it. Its mother may be close by and will come to retrieve it. If the mother doesn't come in a reasonable amount of time, look for her or her nest. If you find either, put the baby gently in a box or suitable container, and place that near the mother or the nest where she will be able to see it, making sure there are no predators in the area.     WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND A BUNNY

    Sometimes what may appear to be a small and helpless bunny is actually big enough and old enough to be on its own, and probably doesn't need your help. If a bunny is 4 inches long or bigger, has its eyes open and its ears up, it is perfectly safe, barring any obvious signs of injury. If you do find a very small bunny alone, return it to its nest if you can locate it. If you find a nest of bunnies who appear unattended, they should be left alone, as their mother is most likely out foraging for food. Observe the nest from a safe distance without disturbing it. Watch to see if the mother rabbit returns. You can use two sticks to make an 'X' over the nest. If the sticks aren't moved within 12 hours, the mother has probably not returned to the nest.     WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND A RACCOON

    It's certainly not uncommon for raccoons to invade people's property, scavenging for food in trash cans and dumpsters. They may carry disease and are pests, for the most part, so homeowners generally view them as problems, not guests. But you're an animal lover, so if you find an injured raccoon alone and helpless, you may have the urge to help it. Resist the urge. Raccoons - especially adults - should not be handled, touched or approached. A raccoon may be aggressive and can attack even if injured. Call animal control or a wildlife rehabilitator. If you find a baby raccoon abandoned, place an upside-down laundry basket or something similar over it. The container should be secure enough that the baby raccoon can't move it, but light enough that its mother can move it if she returns. Observe the baby for a few hours to see if its mother comes. Raccoons are excellent parents and don't usually let their young out of their sight, so she's most likely nearby. If after a reasonable amount of time you believe the baby is truly on its own, contact a wildlife rehabilitator. (Humane Society of the United States)

    WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND A DUCK OR DUCKLING

    OK, Tony Soprano, you've got some ducks in your pool. Don't have a panic attack about it. If you see ducks in your pool, simply shouting a bit and shooing them away should do the trick. Keep your pool covered to prevent them from coming back. If a duckling is in your pool, however, it may not be able to fly away on its own just yet. Build a simple ramp in the pool to let the duckling exit and find shelter.

    It's very common to see a mother duck with her ducklings in residential neighborhoods and streets, in which case you should trust the mother to keep them safe unless you're sure there is imminent danger. If you see ducklings on their own and their mother does not appear after a reasonable amount of time, try to corral them into a ventilated box and contact a wildlife rehabilitator immediately.     WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND AN OPOSSUM

    Generally speaking, if you find an injured opossum, be it an adult or a baby, the best thing you can do to help it is to simply call a wildlife rehabilitator right away. If it's particularly cold and help is not on the way immediately, you can cover the opossum with a cloth or blanket. Before you call for help, though, be sure the opossum is really in distress, especially if it is young. It may not be as helpless as you think. If a baby appears to be abandoned but is not injured, leave it alone and monitor the situation to see if its mother comes for it, or if it simply moves on under its own power.     WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND A BAT

    First and foremost, never touch a bat with your bare hands. If you find a bat on the ground, it's not necessarily injured. In early summer, a young bat may simply be chilling out while its mother moves her young around. Injured or not, a grounded bat may spread its wings defensively and hiss if approached. Be cautious. Secure the area to keep the bat safe from predators, because even if the bat is not injured, a neighborhood cat or other animal could wander by and do harm. Touch a small tree branch to the bat's feet. Its grabbing reflex should allow it to take hold. If the bat appears unharmed, use a ladder to very slowly and carefully place the branch with the bat at least six feet high in a tree, choosing a spot where the bat will be concealed by foliage until it is ready to fly away. If the bat appears injured or you don't feel comfortable moving it, contact a wildlife rehabilitator. (Bat World Sanctuary)

    WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND A BABY DEER

    People often find deer fawns by themselves and assume the baby animals have been abandoned, when this is usually not the case. In fact, a fawn on its own is not only normal, it's how they're meant to be. Adult female deer give birth in seclusion, and during the first weeks of a fawn's life, its mother will keep relatively far away from its bed site. This is because if a predator happens to find the mother, it (hopefully) won't also find the newborn. For these reasons, the best thing to do if you find a deer fawn is to leave it alone and not touch it, because it's probably perfectly fine. If you believe the fawn is cold, injured or otherwise in distress, monitor it from a distance for about eight hours. If its mother does not return to it, it may be an orphan after all.     WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND A SKUNK

    If you find a skunk, your strategy should be very similar to when you find a raccoon - i.e., hands off. However, you may come across a baby skunk or skunks. A line of baby skunks may likely be walking nose to tail, which looks adorable, but if their mom's not around, it could mean trouble. Skunks have crappy eyesight, so if something frightens a mother skunk and sends her running, her babies can lose track of her easily. If you find baby skunks without their mother around, place an upside-down laundry basket or something similar over them. The container should be secure enough that the baby skunks can't move it, but light enough that their mother can move it if she returns. Observe the babies for a few hours to see if their mother comes. If she shows up but can't move the basket on her own, approach very slowly and quietly so you don't frighten the skunks and get sprayed. The mother will stamp her front feet if she becomes alarmed, so watch out. If the mother doesn't come for her babies in a reasonable amount of time, call a wildlife rehabilitator.     WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND A MARINE ANIMAL

    If you find an injured or stranded marine animal on or near the beach, do not touch it. Your desire to help is laudable, but not only will you almost certainly be doing more harm than good, your actions will also be illegal under the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972. Seals, sea lions, sea otters, whales and dolphins all are federally protected by the MMPA. If you see a harbor seal pup that appears stranded, know that it is normal for these pups to be out of the water either for warmth or to wait while their mothers forage for food. Observe the animal from a safe distance. If it is clearly injured, is in distress or is left alone for more than 48 hours, call the Marine Mammal Stranding Network at 800-853-1964. (PAWS)

    Hip dysplasia is a crippling condition most frequently seen in large dogs, although it can also occur in small dogs and even cats. The hip joint is a ball-and-socket type and in a healthy animal, the ball or head fits tightly into the socket, resulting in smooth and pain-free movement.

    With hip dysplasia, the joint is loose, causing unstable and often painful movement. Over time, the instability results in debilitating arthritis. The cause of hip dysplasia is complex, although we do know that genetics plays a big role. For instance, certain large breeds such as German shepherds are more prone to the disease.

    Also, recent studies have implicated nutrition and rapid growth in a puppy as factors in the development of the disease. These results have led to the development of special diets for the rapid growth stage of large breed dogs.

    The Symptoms

    Don't assume that just because your dog is lame in his hind limbs, he has hip dysplasia. Only your veterinarian can make the proper diagnosis.

    The first signs of hip dysplasia may appear as early as 4 months of age and as late as 10 years. A dysplastic dog may have stiffness upon rising. The stiffness usually gets a bit better after moving around. He may hold a hind leg up or drag it. Bunny hopping while running and waddling while walking are common. Many dogs are reluctant to climb stairs or play Frisbee, because these activities apply a lot of force to the joint.

    Your veterinarian can make a preliminary diagnosis based on a physical examination. For a more

    definitive diagnosis, especially on a younger animal, x-rays are used. These require anesthesia, since it can be uncomfortable to put an affected dog in the position necessary to make the diagnosis.

    The Treatments

    for hip dysplasia are aimed at relieving discomfort and pain and preventing the progression of arthritis. Until recently, surgery had been touted as the only hope for dogs with hip dysplasia. But at a lecture at the Tufts Animal Expo 2000 in Boston, veterinary orthopedists recommended effective medical therapies. Although there is no cure for hip dysplasia, a combination of the treatments outlined in the following slides can reduce your dog's pain and allow him to lead a near-normal life.

    Weight loss

    Weight loss is essential! Extra weight means more pressure on the hip joint at every step and, therefore, more pain. Weight loss alone can result in pain relief in a majority of animals. Try weight-reducing diets and carrots or string beans as low-calorie nutritious treats. Your vet can help you design a program, or you can start by trying these delicious and healthy pet food recipes.

    Low-impact exercises help your dog stay active without enduring too much pain. Try some of these options:

    -Stick to low-impact exercises, such as walking and swimming.

    -Walk in water, tall grass, sand, or even snow; this forces the dog to fully raise his legs to decrease stiffness.

    Post-workout recovery

    A dog suffering from hip dysplasia needs time to rest and recover. Remember these tips to prevent injuries:

    -Try to exercise your dog every day.

    -Don't vary the exercises too much; this can overload the joints and cause pain.

    -At the beginning, some anti-inflammatory medication may be helpful.

    -Your dog may get comfort from cold packs on the hips immediately after 20 minutes of exercise, warm compresses 10 to 15 minutes twice a day, or a heated bed at other times.

    -Always provide a soft, comfortable bed for your dog

    Disease-modifying agents. Available in both oral and injectable forms, these agents enhance joint health by providing the necessary precursors to maintain and repair the cartilage components of the joint.

    The oral products are not subject to FDA requirements. As a result, the various products differ in content and effectiveness. Check with your veterinarian before using one of the following.

    The injectable form polysulfated glycosaminoglycan (Adequan) is approved for use in dogs and horses. It is injected into a muscle twice weekly. Studies suggest that it may also reduce lameness and pain and increase range of motion in dogs with hip dysplasia. None of the disease-modifying agents have any serious side effects.

    Anti-inflammatory and analgesic medications

    The most commonly used treatments in dogs are the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), because they reduce joint pain and inflammation.

    Buffered aspirin, because of its low cost and availability, has been the most frequently prescribed drug. Its tendency to cause stomach ulcers and gastrointestinal problems has led veterinarians to lean toward other NSAIDs. But because of the possibility of side effects with all of the NSAIDs, it is recommended that they be used only short term for acute pain. These drugs are not approved for use in cats; before giving your cat an aspirin, get advice from your vet.

    When to Consider Surgery

    If you've tried all of the above, and your dog is still in severe pain, surgery may be necessary. The type of surgery recommended depends on your dog's age, severity of arthritis, general health, temperament, and your finances.

    The common techniques recommended are triple pelvic osteotomies (which reshape the hip joint) in young dogs, total hip replacements in older dogs, and as a last resort, removal of the femoral head or ball of the joint, after which the body forms a painless false joint. Get the opinion of your veterinarian and a veterinary orthopedic surgeon if possible.
