A rare Grevy's zebra was born at the Chester Zoo in Cheshire county, England. It is the first Grevy's zebra born at the zoo in 34 years.

UK Zoo Welcomes Rare Zebra

The newborn zebra's name is Merida. She was born to Nadine and Mac, and is their first offspring. The brown stripes with which Merida was born will turn black as she grows.

"She [the foal] is a lively one but mum Nadine is doing a great job so far, particularly given that it's her first - she's certainly earning her parental stripes," said Tim Rowlands, the curator of mammals at the zoo.

The Chester Zoo is a member of a breeding program in Europe for the largest species of zebras. The Grevy's zebra, distinguished by its narrow stripes, is an endangered species. Estimates put the population of Grevy's zebras in the wild at only 2,500.

"Since our female zebras arrived a few years ago, we have worked very hard to breed this highly endangered species, and the arrival of this foal is not only a really good achievement for us and good news for the species as a whole," Rowlands said.

killing animals for enjoyment is a sociopathic endeavor. when hunters are instead killed by the creature they're aiming at is a joy to me.

In describing the zebra, would you say they are black stripes on white, or white stripes on black ?
