Police arrested a man in Florida on Saturday for stealing a prize-winning French Bulldog and 15 French Bulldog puppies worth a total of $80,000, Reuters reported. The dogs were recovered and returned to their rightful owner in Miami.

Vigil Philip Birch, 29, will face charges of grand theft and dealing in stolen property for the dog theft that took place on New Year's Eve. Birch says that he did not steal the dogs, but bought them from a friend for $2,200 each. Birch claims the unidentified friend who sold him the dogs is the true thief.

The adult dog who was stolen is El Che. Breeder Marcelo Cicuta, El Che's owner, says the dog has won awards at several prestigious dog shows, including the 2010 Westminster Kennel Club dog show.

The American Kennel Club lists French Bulldogs as the third-most stolen breed of dog in the United States, and says they can cost up to $2,500 each.
