CHRIS P. BACON
Location: Clermont, Fla.
Date of birth: Jan. 13, 2013
Chris P. Bacon was born with little hope for a full or long life. That's because he cannot use his hind legs. Unable to care for the disabled piglet, his owner handed him over to veterinarian Len Lucero, who gave Chris a second chance. Lucero cleverly designed Chris a special wheelchair made out of K'NEX toy pieces. As Chris has grown larger, Lucero has designed new harnesses to provide continued mobility for the adorable pig.

Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo in Florida was excited to post a photo on Facebook showing a roseate spoonbill with two spring chicks in its nest on March 11. A week later, a new photo showed there was twice as much cuteness as previously thought, with four hungry beaks poking out of the nest. It wasn't long before the chicks lost their fuzzy down, and their beaks formed the unique shape that gives the species its name.

These three cute baby maras were born at the Artis Royal Zoo in Amsterdam in April. Maras are rodents, the fourth largest species of rodent in the world. To ensure that Tien the clouded leopard cub was properly socialized, Point Defiance Zoo staff spent lots of time playing with the cub during his first few months. Not that anyone would need an excuse to play with this fellow. Over the course of the year, Tien made friends with a Sumatran tiger cub named Kali, and a female clouded leopard cub named Sang Dao, the latter of which is intended to be Tien's mate someday.
