Tom Beradinelli, 70, of Weymouth, Mass., was walking his 8-year-old Boxer, Maggie, near his house last Thursday night when he slipped on ice and fell, hitting his head and knocking himself unconscious.
Maggie ran to a neighbor's house and jumped at the door until she gained the attention of the dogs inside and their owner, Joe Tanko, who knew Maggie and Beradinelli.
"I ran to the door and I saw Maggie with no Tom at the end of the leash," Tanko said.
Tanko found Beradinelli unconscious in the snow and called 911. Beradinelli's fall caused a brain bleed and head trauma. Doctors who treated him said he certainly would have died if Maggie had not acted as quickly as she did.
Beradinelli's wife, Christine, said the doctors told her, "Your husband's alive because the dog went to that door."
Beradinelli has had surgery to treat his injuries, and he remains in intensive care, but appears to be recovering.
