Temple Fish Do Synchronized Swimming
"You know you're very lucky? This is the first time they do a circle. Never ever before."
So says the apparent keeper of this koi pond in Kek Lok Si Temple, Air Itam, Penang, Malaysia. The lucky man in question is amateur videographer Teik Kooi Lee, who began shooting footage of the swirling fish moments before they spontaneously began to form a hypnotic circle. It's not normal behavior for koi, but the speaker surmises they are following the movements of a leader. "Wherever he go, they follow him," the man says.
But there may be a more magical explanation to this unexpected display. "It's like a miracle," the koi pond keeper proposes. Either way, the unusual koi circle is a beautiful moment thankfully captured on video for us to enjoy.
