Dogs Originated in Europe, According to New DNA Evidence

the daily dish More on PawNation: Discovery, Dogs, Evolution, Wolves

New DNA evidence suggests that dogs were first domesticated in Europe between 19,000 and 32,000 years ago, according to the Associated Press.

Were Dogs Domesticated In Europe? Scientists Disagree

The new research is based on DNA taken from the fossils of 18 ancient animals related to dogs and wolves. The fossils were found in Argentina, Belgium, Germany, Russia, Switzerland and the United States. When compared to DNA from modern dogs and wolves, similarities between the ancient animals and the modern canines were revealed.

The findings conflict with previous beliefs that dogs, as we know them, originated in east Asia and the Middle East.

Some experts were quick to acknowledge that the new research doesn't mean domesticated dogs didn't also evolve elsewhere, just that Europe played a more significant role than previously thought.

Most scientists agree that dogs evolved from wolves after the animals began to interact with humans, eventually becoming tame. Because the new DNA evidence predates even human agriculture, it suggests that dog evolution occurred while humans still acted as hunter-gatherers, rather than farmers.

Hey Storm this is for you:
You are seriously mentally ill. I suggest you get anger management and reality checks. Your lack of intelligence and facts are seriously misguided. You are truly as ugly as any fanatic that wants to reek havoc on our country. You ARE a disgrace. You lack any morals or ethical compass. You just spew your token hate slogans out there none of which are facts. I feel very sorry for someone so ignorant, and hateful. Phew any more ridiculous hypocritical statements can you come up with. You are a joke. But keep it up because the silent majority sees people like you and just confirms to them, that people like you are the "UGLY AMERICAN". Pathetic.
To answer the question at hand about dogs and where they come from mine comes from GOD ( dog is God spelled backward). They are a gift to us from God. They do so much for man, yet man is not very responsible to them. That is heinous!

This does not make any kind of sence - the tiny Chihuahua Dog originated from Mexico many centuries before the Europeans came to the new world. Maybe the Chihuahua came to the Americas through the frozen Bering sea that seperated Asia from the Americas...LOL!

Chances are that it did. It has been suggested that maybe even before the time of ancient rome there may have been trade between the two hemispheres, but it's not unlikely at all that humans traveling in hunting groups to the americas brought along their faithful furry companions

This could be partially correct but I think it was the dog that domesticated man, not the other way around.

Note to those who dis-believe the veracity of the article due to misinformation as to the selection process: species change through genetic mutation; changes that make an individual more able to survive and procreate under given conditions become a greater proportion of the species than their unchanged siblings when those conditions come about. If the required conditions come about by chance and under "naturally" occurring conditions the effect is called natural selection. If the conditions come about by purposeful action of humans it is artifical selection and can be many thousands of times more quickly acting. Artifical selection of desired genetic mutations caused the evloution of the many breeds of dogs (also the many types of corn and wheat, etc.); most of the rest came about over millions of yrare of natural selection. Perhaps God made the rules, but mankind used the rules to its benefit.

Man has radically changed many animals, fowls and plants with selective breeding. It seems reasonable that a man interacted with wolves they would only keep those around that were the tamest and that came this would be interbred. I completely buy the idea that man was domesticating the Wolf while they were still hunter and gatherers. This enabled men of that time as a wheel did for man at a later time. It enabled their hunting ability extended their range and gave them a warning system for strangers and dangers.
