Moscow Investigating Pigeons' Zombie-Like Behavior

An undead pigeon apocalypse may sound like the next "Sharknado"-esque movie idea, but it's becoming a scary reality for the people of Moscow. According to The Guardian, the Russian city has been experiencing a strange epidemic that is causing pigeons to fall out the sky and stumble around like zombies before dying.

The increasing number of affected birds has caused Moscow to launch an official investigation into the issue, fearing the strange problem could be caused by an avian disease. The city's environmental prosecutor has put Moscow's environmental protection agency and several other agencies to work on the investigation.

Investigators have had difficulty recording the scope of the problem, due to varying reports from citizens. Some say that only several birds have been affected, while others claim large numbers of pigeons are dying in this bizarre fashion. All the reports have described the same symptoms. Pigeons have been spotted with a general loss of orientation, causing them to stumble, fly into things and fall. These unusual behaviors give the disoriented birds the look of zombies.

Experts worry that the pigeons may be infected with Newcastle disease, an avian ailment that can pass to humans. Salmonella infections were found in some of the affected birds. The more dangerous bird flu and parrot fever have not been found. The current hypothesis is that a salmonella outbreak occurred amongst the birds, spurred by hot temperatures in Moscow. Several scientists say these kinds of mass bird deaths happen nearly every summer, but may seem more serious this year since the pigeon population has grown significantly.

Vets predict the outbreak, and the resulting peculiar pigeon behavior, will come to an end soon. But some bloggers are insisting these occurrences forebode the end of times, as predicted by Rasputin, on August 23rd, 2013. In a few days, we will know who's right.

Just a preview: Rev.: 17 Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and with a loud voice he called to all the birds that fly directly overhead, “Come, gather for the great supper of God, 18 to eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all men, both free and slave,[a] both small and great.”
