According to GrindTV, Tyson Royston, the 10-year-old surfer, was in the water when the shark bit his surfboard, lifted him out and pulled him under.
"A shark tangled in my leash and pulled me back, and pulled me under, and I reached down and undid my leash to swim in. I swam as hard as I could," say Royston.
Royston's coach Robert Weaver watched in terror as the events unfolded.
Both Royston and his coach swam to shore unscathed. The 25th annual S.C. Governor's Cup of Surfing was immediately postponed until September 7.
The director of the Southern South Carolina District of the Eastern Surfing Association believes that Royston's quick moves to remove his leash and swim away is what saved his life.
