Swan Rescue Halts NJ Turnpike Trafficthe daily dish
It's nice to know you are always sharing the road with an animal lover. According to Gothamist, a truck driver on the New Jersey Turnpike pulled over to help an injured swan on the roadway, which was eventually shut down to help the animal.
Fred Kowal was hauling debris in his truck when he spotted two swans waddling by one of the exits. Once he realized one of the animals looked injured, the trucker pulled over and took action. As he approached the birds, Kowal noticed that one of the swans, probably a male, appeared to be protecting his injured travel buddy. The other swan had several cuts around its foot, which made it uncomfortable for the bird to move.
Kowal attempted to herd the swans away from the bustling road and into a nearby swamp. Unfortunately, the healthy swan headed out into traffic instead, forcing cars to come to a crawl to avoid hitting the bird.
Part of the turnpike eventually was shut down so Kowal and another driver could move the animals to safety. Kowal stuck around for a few minutes after to ensure the adorable troublemakers stayed put.
