Fisherman Catches Creepy-Looking Fishthe daily dish
Sometimes we need a reminder that the ocean is as unknown to us as outer space, and its creatures can be as strange and unsettling as any space alien could be. This week, fisherman John Denton has reminded us by catching a very unexpected piranha-like fish, according to KBOI.
Denton fishes in the lake behind his Arlington, Wash., house regularly, and is used to catching familiar fish like trout and bass. But on Sunday, things took a turn for the weird when he reeled in something unusual. "The thing went crazy," Denton said. "I got it kind of close and kind of went, 'That don't look like a bass.'"
Denton brought his catch to a nearby Cabela's outdoors-equipment store for safekeeping until someone from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife could identify the creature. The fish turned out to be a pacu, a relative of the piranha, except herbivorous, with square, human-like teeth instead of the piranha's famously pointed, razor-sharp teeth.
Pacu fish are native to the warm climates of South America, which means this particular fish was definitely a stranger to the waters of a Washington lake. Fish and Wildlife officials say the pacu must have been abandoned in the lake by an owner who no longer wanted it. It's anybody's guess as to how long the fish had survived there.
