Could the Detroit Zoo Giraffe Be Sold for $80,000?

The shock following the city of Detroit's bankruptcy announcement has settled, and now many are wondering about the next step for the troubled metropolis. According to the Detroit Free Press, the city is contemplating selling some of their assets, including a female giraffe named Chardo from the Detroit Zoo.

Facing the largest municipal bankruptcy in American history, the city must find quick ways to chip away at their mounting debt, currently estimated at $15 billion. Detroit's emergency manager, Kevin Orr, is working on evaluating everything the city owns to see what can be sold as Detroit enters into negotiations with creditors. This plan includes one of the city's fertile, female giraffes residing at the Detroit Zoo. This scenario worries many Michigan residents, who have already learned that the masterpieces at the Detroit Institute of Arts could go up for auction to help settle this massive sum.

"That's one of the saddest things about the situation," Kevin Boyle, a Detroit-born historian, expressed to the Detroit Free Press. "You find yourself asking questions like, how do you measure one of the country's great arts institutions against a public park? How do you measure the DIA against the historical museum? You're caught between these terrible sets of choices. How do you distribute the pain? It's really less about minimizing the pain than distributing it."

With over $150 million worth of art, the DIA's collection is one of the most valuable assets Orr has at his disposal, and is among the easiest to sell. The Detroit Zoo's giraffe is something different. Not only does the idea of auctioning off a zoo animal seem somewhat preposterous, but accredited zoos, like the Detroit Zoo, must adhere to strict ethical standards provided by the federal government. These limits will most likely prevent the sale of any of the zoo's animals. Under these standards, the animal's welfare comes first, meaning the creatures would have to go to suitable and safe homes that could take years to find - not just sold off to the highest bidder.

Seeing a price tag on a giraffe may be startling, but city officials say that Orr is just obtaining a full scope of what the city has before entering negotiations. Overall, selling assets may be a temporary fix for Detroit, but the city truly needs severe financial restructuring to emerge from the chaos.

Why was it okay to bail out the big banks? They crashed the economy, they don't create jobs, they create deficit. Not one of them faces and prosecution or prison time, and they keep getting money from the government. Why do we continue to bail out the wealthy? It's not like we are doing anything for those who lost their jobs. They get shamed when the company sells out to China. The wealthy gets more tax breaks and loop holes than the people who actually work to make them their millions.

you know that unions gave us the 40 hour week, workmans comp and mnimum wage right? That the right to work laws take away protections and give all the power to the employers right?

Yes I do. I live in Michigan and slick Rick pass this during a lame duck session that was illegal because it violated the open meetings act. Then again, what did people expect from him. He ran Gateway into the ground and sold bits and pieces of it to China. Great guy we have here. I bet the reason he wants the zoo and the DIA sold is because he has some friends with cash to burn and they would like a masterpiece or an exotic animal. The man has sold the people of Michigan out, so whats wrong with art or animals?

So we're all being punished because a bunch of scum ******* pigs can't control themselves, stole money from the city for DECADES and wasted funds to the point we're going bankrupt! Then we have Orr selling off our art and zoo animals. How about making everyone in high ranking positions take huge pay cuts. Force people who have been paid WAY TOO MUCH to be on the city council to take cuts! No, they said on the news tonight that we're going to have to pay MORE for these idiots who can't pay their gas, water and electric bills. The city gets stiffed on bills all the time and now they're making everyone who can barely pay their bills, pay more to cover the lazy welfare pigs who skip out on their bills and start up new bills in someone else's name! I'm so sick and tired of this city. It's where I was born. It's where I grew up but damn it! It's become a tick to the whole state and possibly the nation.

The Mayors in Detroit last 20 years should all be hung. Unions have always f cked Detroit Union people are worthless for USA, Unions are bankrupting many US cities. Its time to stop putting there let it be waste land. I drive 50 MPG 2013 Fiesta the bet US cars might in Mexico. Crown Victoria makes money for Ford for decades with taxis and police cars. Ford management are worthless. They sold Jag and Volvo. If I ran Ford for 4 years I would I would make Ford the biggest company in the world revenue wise.

Since Detroit is bankrupt it would do well for the city to sell off all the animals they have within the Zoological Park and scuffle all the care takers to animal control. It would save them money.

Are they sell everything they can pay for some municipal employees fat retirement?
I think they should sue the politicians who gave all their assets away because they were stupid or corrupt and wanted to get reelected.
