Lost Dog Owner Threatened With Fines and Jail Time for Putting Up Flyers

Usually a struggling dog owner looking for a missing pet finds support from his community; Shawn Slater found the opposite. According to King5.com, the Marysville, Wash., man has been threatened with possible jail time and fines for putting up posters of his lost pet.

Slater's three-year-old Rottweiler, Nanna, went missing over the Fourth of July holiday weekend when she was scared off by neighborhood fireworks. While squeezing out of her fenced-in yard, Nanna also managed to lose the dog tags she was wearing.

Slater and his family immediately began the search for the dog. Finding Nanna was not only important for Slater's peace of mind, but his overall health. This particular Rottweiler is a certified medical alert and service dog, helping Slater cope with post traumatic stress disorder, seizures and anxiety.

As part of their effort to help find Nanna, several of Slater's friends posted flyers around the area, including on utility poles. Because utility poles are city property, this action is illegal. The signs caught the attention of a police officer, who called Slater and informed him that if he posted any more flyers he would be given a $250 fine and a day in jail per sign.

While Slater understands the law and is willing to comply, he hopes that authorities understand that this search is for more that just a pet dog. After receiving criticism for how they handled the matter, local police say they are going to make an effort on educating people about the laws against posting flyers on city property.

Unfortunately, Nanna still hasn't been found. If you live in Slater's area and have seen an untagged, 127-pound Rottweiler with classic markings, please contact him here: shawnslater@live.com.

ANYBODY who posts at least "several" flyers ANYWHERE for ANY reason has always had to answer to the law at some point! Even free USA has laws. Live with it. By the way,he just got better exposure for the dog. Now even Muscovites can be on the lookout for Nanna. Isnt she a beautiful dog. Good luck,Shawn. Hopefully the next story we see is you two have reunited!

Yet another cop who needs to be fired. Why hasn't the chief of police and the mayor called this citizen to apologize for this officer's atrocious behavior? I'd love to see a jury trial for an offense like this.

My cousin does line work for the phone company, and has to climb the pole with posters in his way, it's hard for him to climb when there are posters, job postings, tag sales, etc. So honestly I side with the law. Don't wanna jeopardize my cousins safety for posts...

And cops wonder why the public doesn't like them. This cop is either on a power trip or he has a two digit IQ.

Cops need to stop stirring **** up for a dollar.Let the man find his friend. If a police canine went missing they wouldn't be worrying about what is the city's and what isn't.But because he is a civilian they have to make a huge deal out of it.Stop cock riding you stupid police and let him continue his search. The city has officials to represent it they don't need faggot 5-0 butting in.
