Dog Detects Diabetes in 7-Year-Old Boy

A boy who volunteers for an organization that trains dogs to detect diabetes was diagnosed with the disease by one of the very dogs he helps train, according to KBMT-TV.

Seven-year-old Lakenyan Carter has spent his summer vacation volunteering for Drey's Alert Dogs, where dogs are trained to paw at diabetic patients when they experience low or high blood sugar, both conditions being possible medical emergencies. Lakenyan helps socialize the organization's puppies through its Kids for Diabetics program.

Last Thursday, one of Drey's dogs, Marshall, began pawing at Lakenyan, but as far as the boy or his family knew, he was not diabetic. After testing him, however, they discovered that his blood-sugar levels were high enough to diagnose him with the disease.

Diabetes is a serious disease, but with early detection and careful control, it can be managed. Lakenyan is lucky to have been volunteering at Drey's for Marshall to detect his own high blood sugar.

"If we wouldn't have been here, I probably never would've known that he was a diabetic," said Lakenyan's mother, Kenyatta. "The dogs alerted me that he was diabetic."

At the time of this interview, they didn't know if he was T1 or T2. He has now learned that he is T1. People need to educate themselves before talking about something they obviously know nothing about. T1 children need insulin to live, as their bodies do not make enough of it. It has nothing to do with how they look. I know T1's who are all sizes. If you don't have anything nice to say, then you shouldn't comment. Put yourself in their shoes, how would you feel if this was one of your family members and people where making all kinds of comments about them. This is a very nice young man.

True diabeticdogsrule - it's unfortunate children aren't routinely tested for Type I Diabetes on the check-ups their parents do take them on. But, there is aglomerating data that shows overweight children should be tested for Type II dabetes if they're at least 20 lbs above normal weight and not active. Many of these children can be treated with diet and getting off their "duff's" alone. If that means a parent need get up off their couches and take them for a walk - than that's what need be done! That primary or pediatric physicians don't have test systems and ample supply of strips to give parents is an absolute incredulity knowing the utter devastation this DISEASE is on the human body. In children - non-diagnosis is a crime! A child with ANY Type of diabetes may as well have cancer if a parent allows not "misdiagnosis" - but NON-Diagnosis!

more and more children are being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and type 1 is not just young children's disease. Sad regardless but use the internet, do a little research on the subject before assuming and speaking. Overweight children, like the overweight adults who develop type 2 diabetes can lose weight, exercise and make dietary changes and possibly "reverse" the diagnosis. I am one that was super thin and active and ate healthy food when I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 11/21/85. The ignorance of "sugar diabetes" is a generation old now, education is needed.

Obesity does not have anything to do with Type 1 diabetes.

the mother said she would have never known had it not been for the dog... really? you don't take your child to the doctor? And just because someone is out of shape doesn't mean that's the reason they have diabetes. Its doesn't help, sure, but it isn't the sole reason for it. Also, try thinking about how times have changed. Mothers and fathers are practically forced to work constantly just to feed their children and so aren't around enough to cook healthy meals or teach them how to eat healthy and in fact, healthy food is more expensive than getting a couple meals from mcdonalds. So yeah, you can be "sick" of obese families and be crude about other's lifestyles, or you can keep your idiotic opinions to yourself and go eat your protein bar. How dare you be the judge of others as if you are better than someone just because of the way you look?

A 7 year old kid diagnosed with diabetes is type 1 diabetes, My youngest son was 9 years old when diagnosed with diabetes and children this young have type 1 and it is the worst type of diabetes simply because most of these kid diabetics have to take insulin for the rest of their lives

Children that age tend to get Juvanile diabetes, which is a variation of Type one. It tends to be a PIA to control because the child is growing and hopefully very active, and their blood glucose levels tend to be very irratic.

I think the children need to play more and be active - when we were growing up lots of play time no one had or even heard of diabetes- Since computer and video games kids are not active they eat and sit- Lets get them moving and we will not have to bury them or cut them piece by piece later on.

Are you friggin' kidding me? That dog was sniffing all the food particles that were lodged in that kid's fat rolls! I am so sick of seeing obese families, as if the parents didn't learn from their own mistakes. I do not want to pay for everyone else's over indulgances, or lack of self control.
Don't worry, though. With Obamacare, nobody will be held responsible for their actions (or lack of)
