JOHANNESBURG, May 14, 2013 (AFP) - A South African safari firm said Tuesday they had sacked a guide who caused an Internet storm when video of him drunkenly charging an elephant went viral.

The Singita Game Reserve said the man, initially thought to be a tourist, was in fact an off-duty field guide and was "no longer employed by the reserve."

It added that "further disciplinary procedures are in progress with regard to others involved."

The footage, posted on wildlife site Latest Sightings (www.latestsightings.com), showed a clearly inebriated man charging towards the startled animal.

With friends cheering and encouraging him, the man runs at the elephant, which initially swings its trunk towards him, but soon beats a retreat.

"We cannot stress enough that the behaviour displayed in this video completely contradicts Singita's guiding ethos and values toward conservation and wildlife preservation," the reserve said.

Ah, another video of a fool and his friends. He is very lucky that the elephant didn't continue to charge when he took that trip on is azz. What a dangerous thing drinking does to common sense. His friends are just as twisted for urging him on. I wonder how they would of felt if the outcome was much different. Then too it makes you wonder about their humanity and respect for things wild.

Did the man harm the elephant? No. Did the man hurt the elephant's "feelings"? No. All he did was run up to it. The man should not have not been fired for being "insensitive" to the elephant -- it couldn't have cared less. What is this world coming to?

This is a wildlife preserve and he was an employee there. Charging the elephant like that was showing aggression from the animals point of view and next time a person who is innocent could be killed when and if they accidently cross paths because of this mans actions. This elephant now sees people as a threat. This is how these preserves make money...by tourism.

It is not funny at all. This man exhibits clearly his lack of sensitivity toward animals... He is lucky the elephant did not fire him first.

It is not funny at all. This man's lack of sensitivity toward animal is obvious. He deserved to be fired. He is lucky that the elephant did not fire him first.

What this man did was amazingly stupid. The comments of those wishing death upon him say all that needs to be said about their humanity (or lack of it.) You've been exposed.

Management responding studiedly to stupid act of drunk man taunting elephant, the elephant couldn't lose. The man had everything to lose management could have made a mint off this if -played correctly.
