Needy Animal Shelter Finds Help After Donation Blunder

A six-figure mishap turned into a showing of community support for an animal shelter in Collinsville, Okla. According to KWTV-DT, an Arizona law firm was following through with a woman's will that requested $200,000 be donated to an animal shelter in Collinsville, Ill., but the firm accidentally sent the check to the shelter in Oklahoma.

Wrong Animal Shelter Accidentally Given $200K

Ward-Wiseman Animal Haven in Oklahoma thought they had received a well-timed blessing from a caring stranger. Susan Babbitt, the shelter's owner, said the small shelter is living month-to-month, and that the $200,000 could have been a big boost to helping the facility's animals. Sadly, before Babbitt could cash in the check and put it to use, the Arizona law firm called to inform her of their unfortunate mistake.

Babbitt, disheartened but understanding, returned the check and went back to wondering how her own shelter would survive. But a local news anchor heard of the mix-up and spread the sad tale to press in the area. This exposure has led to thousands of dollars in donations for Ward-Wiseman Animal Haven. In the end, this frustrating mistake opened the door to an impressive flow of support and recognition from the community that hopefully will continue into the future.

This is a story of a mistake that can easily be turned into a job well-done...all the Law Office has to do is make a nice monthly contribution, of, say, $5,000 or so...for ONE year (Tax deductible?)...and I have the feeling the generousity of the public would match that, to help the animal shelter survive and keep innocent, defenseless animals alive and well. What do you think?

The law firm MUST follow through on the wishes of the Will, if not, they would be in some serious trouble and would be open for a justifiable lawsuit which they would not win.
This is nothing more than a violation of trust.

Obviously the law firm did follow through on their obligation to follow the wishes of the will- they got the money back from the wrong shelter and gave it to the right one, it was a mistake in the mailing of the check, nothing more.

I think the law office that made the mistake, and raised hopes so much, should "dig deep" into their slush fund for a substantial donation.

As the nations largest tropical parrot shelter( we can understand the lack of support and donations. We are now housing almost 1400 neglected parrots from all over the country. We have no problem taking all of the help we can get.

Sounds some good Oklahoma biker military veterans need to create a yearly run for this shelter and support it. How about everyone sending in a couple of bucks and if a hundred thousand can do that then life should be easier. No one has to make a huge offering but if many of us chip in a little that we can afford in these hard times everyone will get by.

I am an avid animal advocate and I am so sad for this shelter, but I am thankful that there are people out there who do rally for shelters like this and mostly for those precious animals. It was really a blessing in disguise that this mistake happened. It gave awareness to so many animals in need of help and this woman who runs the shelter. I hope the donations keep coming in for her and other shelters as well.
