Cat Is Too Relaxed While Wearing Thundershirt

More on PawNation: Behavior, Cats, Funny, Thundershirt, Weird
The Thundershirt, in case you're unfamiliar, is a brand of calming shirt designed to "hug" dogs and cats in stressful situations and relieve anxiety. It's the garment Sam the cat wears in this video, and to be honest with you, we're not sure if the Thundershirt doesn't work for him, or if it works much too well. Sam certainly seems calm, but we don't think the shirt is meant to bring him to a state of ... well, just watch.

There is a nerve called the 'vegus' nerve that runs (partially) along the back of cats - pretty much where the bottom of the thundershirt is hitting. When that nerve is compressed, it causes the behavior seen in the video. For the folks saying their cats did it when they were dressed up - it wasn't because they didn't like it, it was because part of the nerve became compressed. When the item is removed, the nerve isn't affected, and the animal can get up and move. - Vet tech - 14 yrs.

I don't see it as abuse but do not see the humor in watching the cat be uncomfortable.....

"Sam" is not trying to be amusing, and he's certainly not "relaxed" by the shirt. This is how cats react to something uncomfortable on their bodies (I've seen them do this with leashes and harnesses as well). It's their way of saying "I hate this, and I'm not moving until you take it off". It makes for a cute video, but remember the poor cat is really unhappy and not trying to amuse an audience on the internet. They should've taken the stupid thing off immediately.

I totally agree with you. I've had cats all my life and his body language is CLEARLY saying, "I hate this thing!" Cats are a lot smarter than many people give them credit for.

All you constant whiners about this cat being abused. IT IS NOT BEING ABUSED. If you morns want to see what real abuse is, go spend a day at an animal farm factory. What you will see there what humans do to animals..... now that is abuse, more like torture. So please stop with the crap that the poor cat is being abused when it isn't!!

This is very typical cat behavior. When we put a costume on for Halloween on both our cats reacted the exact same way. Most recently, our male cat has been wanting to go outside. After several times of him trying to roam to far, we put a leash on him, very unevasive collar and a leash that he can run several yards with, however, he does exactly what this cat does. He could be out exploring but rather acts like all of his limbs are not working.

really now.. the cat is perfectly fine. I don't see abuse here. people over-react way too much nowadays. and the shirt was in no way cutting off circulation. The cat had the thing on for what.. 10-20 seconds and everyone is acting like it's abuse. geez. what really is abuse is not getting your cat fixed, that's abuse!

It wasn't cutting off circulation or anything like that. The cat hated the way it felt, and refused to move because it was so uncomfortable; typical behavior for a cat forced to wear something it doesn't like. It's not exactly abusive, but to just continue standing the cat up over and over again while laughing, is not very sensitive to what the cat is feeling. Whether you like cats or hate cats, it's not OK to be unfeeling towards a pet for our own amusement.

STUPID! Some folks need to "get a real life"! That "shirt" MAY have "cut of" some muscular sensation in the cat and that caused the cat to repeatedly fall over. It's not really that funny at all... especially when the man repeatedly sets the cat back up on it's feet.

A whole lot of pet owners have lost it with all this "cute" stuff….. talk about needing a life!

Good grief! Leave the poor cat alone. He keeps falling over because he doesn't like the darn thing. It feels strange and he probably is afraid to move.
