Rhode Island residents woke up to an unexpected sight on one of their beaches. According to Daily Mail, a 28-foot-long Basking shark washed up deceased on the state's shore.

The sea creature, which weighs several tons, was first spotted by a homeowner in Misquamicut beach, who reported the strange shark corpse to the police.

The basking shark quickly attracted a crowd, with curious onlookers gathering to touch and take photos of the animal. Eventually the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management sent an expert from a nearby aquarium to examine the shark's body. A necropsy to determine the cause of death has been scheduled, as well.

Rhode Island residents have no reason to worry about this as a sign of upcoming shark issues. Basking sharks are filter feeders who feast on plankton, making them harmless to humans, and they are common in the New England area. Basking sharks have bodies that resemble Great White sharks, but can be differentiated by their large jaws and gills.

Currently, experts believe this Basking shark died of natural causes before washing up on shore. While this specimen seems big, it is a normal size for these swimmers. Basking sharks can grow to 45 feet and are the largest shark species, after whale sharks.
