According to the Daily Mail U.K., a community in Terre Haute, Ind., is up in arms after the family of a recently deceased blind woman killed her healthy guide dog so he could be buried alongside her.

Sheila Stadler, 68, died of cancer on March 8 and after telling her children that she wanted her loyal Labrador, Toffee, to be buried along with her. However, Toffee was a healthy 5-year-old dog.

To fulfill his mother's wish, her son Andy put Toffee down and buried the animal with his mother a few days after her death. Andy began to receive death threats from the town as well as members of his own family.

"It got totally out of control," said Gregory Reilly, a veterinary assistant at the local Honey Creek Animal Hospital. "The neighborhood was really angry. People were saying they should burn in hell."

Reilly became involved in the controversy after being blamed for putting Toffee down, which he did not do.

In his and the clinic's defense, Reilly stated, "We would never euthanize a dog -- we simply find them a new home. All I did was try to find out whether what the Stadlers did was legal. It seems very morbid to me, but unfortunately -- as the dog was their property -- it was perfectly legal."

Sadly, this is not the first time this has happened. A 2-year-old Yorkshire Terrier was put down so that he could buried with his owner, Donald Ellis.

This woman's son takes stupidity to a whole new level. Any person with a brain would not kill a perfectly healthy anima (in this type of situation and yes I know people kill healthy animals every day)l. And what shelter or vet put this perfectly healthy animal down??? Geezzz why do I read stories like this.

This story ruined my day! How selfish to put a healthy dog down. I'm sure there is someone who would have adopted this noble animal. They could have waited until the dog died a natural death, and then buried it at the gravesite, or had it cremated and ashes sprinkled. What a payback for a dog that served his mistress all his life!

Would have been far better if the son had been killed and buried with the mother. What a selfish S.O.B.

My father passed away, his service animal did grieve, but went on with life. These animals are not anymore more bonded to their human companions then a house pet is.

What kind of sick person would kill a dog so it could be buried with his mother? He should have waited for the dog to die then bury him with his mother.
