Cats can be crazy and dogs can get overly excited, but have you ever thought about getting a pet that is truly wild? According to Teddy Hilton, animal lovers are handing over large amounts of cash to obtain wild foxes as pets.

The fox's road from wild animal to furry friend started with the study of wolves. Interested in discovering the transition of wolves to dogs, Russian researchers started breeding foxes for insight. These scientists chose the most docile foxes they could find in the wild and have been breeding generations of these calm critters for years.

Today, the researchers say the foxes are essentially tame, allowing them to sell the animals as exotic pets. Americans are the most eager to bring the foxes into their homes, paying $8,000 to own one of the formerly wild predators.

The experts who care for these animals in Russia say the domesticated foxes are a lot like dogs. These pets love to dig, get belly rubs, play and go on walks. While these animals are now genetically tame, they are not socialized. People who decide to purchase one of these new, exotic pets must be dedicated to training the animal and giving it plenty of space.

I do not agree with the taming of foxes or having them as pets. Those creatures are wild and should be left to live their life as nature intended. With so many dogs - and cats - being abandoned in this country, do people really think we need another "pet" that we can abandon when it doesn't meet our expectations? Besides, I thought that species native to the USA are not allowed as pets in this country.

Animals native to this country can be kept as pets, and often are. In some areas, you have to get a special license. It's illegal altogether in other areas. but for the most part, you can have any pet you want without a problem. There are people who even have tigers, leopards, and camels as pets. I've heard of quite a few people having foxes as pets, including fennec foxes. They are very cute. I could not afford one. I think if the person really wants it for a pet, has the money, and will take care of it for its lifetime, there is no reason they shouldn't be allowed to have it. Taking care of it through its lifetime includes caring for it if it turns out to do things the person would object to, like biting or other natural behaviors. Dogs and cats were once wild animals also. They have been domesticated over time, and foxes have been traveling that same route for quite some time now.
