Whales Get Up Close and Personal With Boaters
the daily dish
Boaters off Dana Point encountered two gray whales that were migrating off Southern California and had just been courting and mating, according to Grind TV.

According to the passengers, the whales spent several hours brushing up against their boat and blowing their "stinky whale breath" into the faces of those aboard the small craft.
Captain Tom Southern of Capt. Dave's Dolphin and Whale Safari described the two marine mammals as "the best pair of gray whales ever."
Southern and his boat mates witnessed some mating and described it as "not harsh, but very gently playing and rolling on their sides. They kept doing it for more than an hour." Way to go, whales!
The captain said he had never seen anything like it and felt like they were at the center of a nature channel moment.

You're supposed to keep your distance so no accidents occur but whale lovers and crooked tour skippers think they're like coy and deserve to be petted and bumped into with a boat.

I am amazed at the ignorance of the city folk commenting on this page , it is laughable. a whale can kill you in a moment, not that they mean to the are just incredibly large and powerful,

I hope it becomes more prevalent throughout these areas where mother's come with calves and are trusting and gentle to the point where indeed someone could do much harm. It's felt that those who come close to them share the experience with others and thus turn them away from harming them and causes that help them. Some even read more about what is known about them and through understanding turn other Nations - such as Japan's Sei whale "research" can be outlawed. If one comes upon a mating area males can and often do become reckless and a fin or tail is all that's needed to injure people merely desiring to see them up close. It's wise to know the difference and the species in which one is trying to observe. Competing for females can get contentious even for calves already born and several have been injured in amorous displays by males for their mother's attentions. So hopefully, little by little, the ignorance is vanishing. Unfortunately not quick enough when hunters entice them to their ships only to harpoon them for whatever reasons. None of which are worthy of such majestic and knowledgeable creatures.

March 19 2013 at 5:27 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyTo you people talking about the engine running, the prop is NOT moving just because the engine is running, also they left it on in case the whales got violent. educate your ignorance
March 19 2013 at 3:55 PM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down ReplyMy goodness, why so upset? But regardless of props moving or not, the humans should have cautiously moved away and observed from a distance.
March 19 2013 at 7:26 PM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down ReplyThe idiot could have shut off the engine.
March 19 2013 at 3:49 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI thought that same thing Toni. At least the guy could have turned off his engine.
March 19 2013 at 3:38 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyUmm, is not a federal law that you are not allowed to harrass marine wildlife and must stay within a certain number of feet from them? That's how it is off the Oregon coast, we have whale watching tours but if the coast guard catches you chasing them , you are in big time trouble. If the animal approaches you, it is your duty to move away.
