Cat owners, double-check your cupboards and cat food labels. According to the Hunterdon County Democrat, BluePearl Veterinary Partners are urging owners to return or discard bags of certain Diamond Pet Foods after the company announced a voluntary recall that affects 25 states.

Diamond Pet Foods issued a recall on Premium Edge Finicky Adult Cat Formula dry cat food, Premium Edge Senior Cat Hairball Management Formula dry cat food, Premium Edge Kitten Formula dry cat food, Diamond Naturals Kitten Formula dry cat food and 4health All Life Stages Cat Formula dry cat food after the products tested low for thiamine or Vitamin B1, which is an essential nutrient for felines.

Cats need thiamine to keep their nervous systems operating normally. A lack of the nutrient can lead to serious neurological and gastrointestinal problems. The first signs of thiamine deficiency are lack of appetite, vomiting, weight loss and salivation. In more developed cases, neurological problems like a wobbly walk, circling and seizures can arise.

The states affected by this recall are Alabama, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia. Cat owners from these states who have the recalled pet food should discard it immediately.

"If you have fed your cat with the affected product and notice your cat is not acting right, take him or her to your family veterinarian as soon as possible," said Dr. Laura Gibeon, a senior clinician with BluePearl in Manhattan. "Of course, if it is an after-hours emergency, we would be glad to help at any one of our locations."

Specifics on the products affected can be found at the Diamond Pet Foods and Premium Edge websites.

4health-brand products affected include 4health All Life Stages Cat Formula 5 lb. and 18 lb. bags NGF0802 14-Aug-2013, 18-Aug-2013 in the listed U.S. states.

Thanks for sharing this -- sharing on my s/n pages with msg. What does it take for the food industry to stop this happening? So disgusted! We must be able to be sure our loved ones' food supply (and our own) is safe! Whomever is (ir)responsible for these failures should be fired, prosecuted and imprisoned, and fined. Putting innocent lives in jeopardy should be a serious crime.
