Sometimes all it takes is a small tweak for your pet to reap huge health benefits (as long as you avoid these 9 Pet Care Health Myths). Boost his health and happiness this month with quick tips from veterinary emergency care specialist and author, Justine Lee, DVM. -
1. A Terrific Toy
If you can't afford day care, a toy is the next best way to occupy your pet. For dogs, a treat-stuffed Kong toy provides hours of entertainment. For cats, try a sisal scratching post, feather on a string, or cat jungle gym.
-
2. A Lifesaving Diet
On average, you can extend your dog's life by almost 2 years by reducing the calories he consumes.
RELATED: Is Your Pet At-Risk for Diabetes?
Ask your vet about your pet's body condition score (a visual rating of body fat), then cut back on up to 30% of his food intake. Use a measuring cup for precise portions.
-
3. Really Clean Litter
To prevent feline urinary tract disease, scoop the box once a day. Opt for clumping litter--and advise completely emptying and cleaning the box with bleach once every 3 to 6 months.
-
4. Playful Panting
Treat your dog to a daily stroll or jog around the block for at least 10 minutes (though 15 is better!). Cat owners, let your kitty go crazy chasing a laser pointer for 5 solid minutes each day (Or, try one of these Games You Can Play With Your Pet).
-
5. A DIY Dentist
Every Sunday, take 2 minutes to clean your pet's teeth. Purchase a rubber finger-tip toothbrush from your vet (and liver toothpaste--pastes made with fluoride can be toxic if swallowed) and brush! The risks of blood infection and heart and metabolic problems are minimized by reducing plaque and tartar buildup.

6. Vaccines
Speak to your vet about skipping unneeded vaccines. Check out our List of Annual Pet Vaccines decide which one your pet really needs. Use the money for blood work to detect metabolic problems that can cause serious illness.

Greta sharing indeed. I would also like to add one more thing to your suggestion that chocolate and dog mix up can prove fatal and make your pets fatally ill. The "Theobromine" content of the chocolates are not good for the pets and have shown the health ill effects as per the pet health studies.

February 17 2013 at 8:05 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI agree with all 6 of the recommendations, but to me the most important one is to be sure to walk your dog(s). I have 4 - I inherited 2 and the other two are 2 are orphans. We walk about 2 miles each day and that helps to keep both them and me healthy. The oldest one is Nacho. He is about 16 by now. We thought he was a gonner a couple of times because of arthritis in his left hind leg and his cough. But I put him on a weight-loss diet and made sure he walked his 2 miles each day and, though he is slower than the rest, he's still very healthy. Once I heard this saying that seems to apply here: "How to you spell love? T I M E.
February 17 2013 at 3:15 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI raised two cats 20 yrs. The secret is regular vet visits. Raise them like kids. Make them family. They will love you the same. Good food. They love to play and they watch tv.
February 17 2013 at 1:15 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI have a 13 year old pitbull that seems as fit as many dogs that are much younger. Always kept the food healthy and consistent exercise. Main trouble he suffered from was chronic ear infections, he even lost his hearing because of too many ear meds or too many ear infections. Just learned about treating his ear problems naturally and wish we had known about this years ago, maybe he'd still have his hearing. It bothers us more than it does him but nice if he could hear. Don't make the mistakes we did, if you have a dog suffering from too many ear infections, go natural and avoid those chemicals in the ears. What we use is called Dr Dogs Ear Oil and he really likes it too. He's also made our lives better, strong and gentle 100 lbs of joy. Hopefully he'll continue to thrive and we'll do our best to keep him that way.

February 17 2013 at 12:41 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyMy girl black Lab lived until she was 14, her hips were bad, she couldn\'t barely hold her urine, poor thing..she ate anything though. I have a big beautiful male black Lab now, he\'ll be four in April, it does cost us a lot to feed him Blue Buffalo Dry and give him a can of natural dog food we found at Petco that he likes that\'s in chunks, he\'s a picky thing, lol. He likes milk bones, animal crackers and pretzels when he can get some of ours but we don\'t buy any salty ones. He gets a taste of anything I\'m eating too, I raised him like a pack dog, I always share with him. It\'s not that we can afford this expensive food, we\'re on a fixed income, my dog will get the best and we\'ll make do with eating less expensive meals and do without things, I\'m not going to feed him that crap that\'s not any good for him. I want him to live as long as he possibly can, he\'s a big part of my life, I love this dog very much. Both of us could take some weight off though, we need to get out together and do some walking, it\'s been so cold and ugly, I\'ve been busy, we\'re planning on moving out of state to where my family is so we aren\'t getting enough exercise right now. He likes to play, a Lab needs entertained and talked to a lot, they need a lot of love and attention, they may be big but they are like little lap dogs on the inside....they like to be babied and fussed over. I love black Labs, they are the most awesome dogs I\'ve ever come across, there\'s nothing like them. They are so intelligent, almost as good as a person sometimes...they really get to know all about you, loving & faithful dogs. They are so worth the best care you can give them.
February 16 2013 at 10:26 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI love all my babies and they are all special. They see the vet 2x's a year. I have one cat that is allergic to so much stuff including cat dander. (a cat that is allergic to itself?) She is receiving allergy shots weekly and she is doing great. But the most heartbreaking news we had today was we had to put one of our horses down and it just breaks our hearts. But we know is she isn't suffering anymore.
February 16 2013 at 9:54 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyRe: Tip #3 and clean litter: you should NEVER use pure bleach to clean ANYthing that your pets come in contact with (bathtub, floor, litterbox, etc.). Their senses of smell are FAR stronger than ours and bleach can damage their nasal passages very easily. Whoever wrote this article should know that.
February 16 2013 at 8:16 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyNot only that, but when the ammonia in cat urine mixes with bleach, it releases chlorine gas, which is very very *BAD*.
February 16 2013 at 9:15 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIt says to use bleach once every 3-6 months, not routinely. All animals cages (or litter boxes in this case) should be sterilized on occasion with a diluted bleach solution. Bleach is the only thing that will kill Parvo... Something a dog can still get, even if it has been vaccinated for it.
