Animal-welfare groups rescued 161 cats from a single Colorado Springs, Colo. home on Tuesday, according to Yahoo News. It is being called one of the largest animal rescue attempts in Colorado's history.

Thirteen different groups teamed up to execute the removal effort, which began at 2 p.m. and took four hours. The cats were found in large kennels, and were observed to be relatively well cared for, although a few were suffering from eye infections, and all need to be spayed or neutered.

The rescue groups agreed to keep secret the identity of the cat owner, a woman in her fifties who began collecting the cats around eight years ago. She will not face charges. The location of her home is also not being revealed.

Caring for and placing the cats is expected to cost thousands of dollars. Those interested in donating money and/or adopting one of the cats should contact any of the several rescue organizations involved in the undertaking. They are Almost Home Adoptions, Angels with Paws, Animal Rescue of the Rockies, Colorado Animal Welfare League, Dream Power, Every Creature Counts, Happy Cat Haven, Life Is Better Rescue, MaxFund, Misha May, Pet Project, Wild Blue Animal Rescue, 4 Paws 4 Life and 9 Lives Rescue.
