    1. TASMANIAN TIGER

    Former Habitat: Australia, Tasmania, New Guinea

    How They Came To Be Extinct: Although a theory suggest that a mysterious disease was to blame for the animal's extinction, a recent study believes that humans were solely responsible for the demise of the Tasmanian Tiger.

    Last Year Seen: The last known Tasmanian Tiger died in an Australian Zoo in 1936.

    2. WOOLLY MAMMOTH

    Former Habitat: Siberia and North America

    How They Came To Be Extinct: A recent study found that hunting by humans, along with climate and habitat change, were what caused the furry beast to become extinct.

    Last Year Seen: The giant creature disappeared from the earth about 10,000 years ago.

    3. DODO

    Former Habitat: Island of Mauritius off the coast of Africa

    How They Came To Be Extinct: The Dodo lived for centuries without enemies on the island, until humans arrived in the early 16th century.

    Last Year Seen: The last Dodo bird was killed in 1681.

    Former Habitat: Bering Island

    How They Came To Be Extinct: After being discovered by a Russian expedition in 1741, the Steller's Sea Cow was hunted for its meat at over seven times the sustainable limit.

    Last Year Seen: The mammal became extinct in 1768.

    Former Habitat: North America

    How They Came To Be Extinct: The once ubiquitous North American bird was wiped out due to deforestation and over-hunting for their meat.

    Last Year Seen: By the 1890s, the Passenger Pigeon had almost completely disappeared.

    Former Habitat: Northern Africa and the Middle East

    How They Came To Be Extinct: European hunters killed off the antelope throughout the 1900s.

    Last Year Seen: The last remaining Bubal Hartebeest was shot between 1945 and 1954.

    7. JAVAN TIGER

    Former Habitat: Indonesia

    How They Came To Be Extinct: When Humans took over the island of Java in the 19th century, they destroyed the animal's natural habitat and deforested their entire land. In addition, the animal was hunted and poisoned by natives who considered them pests.
