STOP THE STRAYS

The local government in Mexico City started a sterilization campaign for spaying and neutering stray dogs and cats. Pictured is a cat waiting for its turn for surgery in the Las Golondrinas neighborhood. 

JUMPIN' FOR JOEYS

Kangaroo mothers Sheila and Daisy stand with their joeys at the Brookfield Zoo's Australia House exhibit in Brookfield, Illinois. The joeys were born last year, and have started to emerge from their mother's pouches to explore their new surroundings.

At the Tennessee Aquarium, an awesome snake-necked turtle strikes a pose for the camera.

In the U.K.'s Chester Zoo, "Hari Hi Way" the baby elephant received his name. Woohoo!

LIVE FOR LOCUSTS

During stock taking at the zoo in Duisburg, Germany, a red-handed tamarin feasts on some delicious locusts. Over 3,000 species are counted at the zoo.

AN OTTER WAY OF LIFE

In Arizona, at the Reid Park Zoo, an African Spotted-Neck Otter shows off its natural aquatic abilities. 

LION LABRADOODLE ON THE LOOSE

A Labradoodle named Charles is pictured with the Virginia Zoo's executive director in Norfolk, Va. The dog had received a haircut to look like the lion mascot of Old Dominion University. However, local residents who had seen the crazy haircut had reported a lion on the loose. Too funny!

HE LOVES ME …

At the Reid Park Zoo in Tucson, Ariz., a tortoise enjoys rose petals as a tasty treat. The flowers make great snacks for these herbivores. 

POLLY WANTS LOVE

Parrot owner Abdul Wadud poses with Princess the macaw outside a court in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Princess is lovesick after being parted with her male partner due to a dispute between their owners. Since separated from her mate on Jan. 3, Princess has been refusing food. We hope everything works out between the two.

TOYS FOR TIGERS

At Zoo Praha in the Czech Reublic, a tiger is seen carefully inspecting a toy that had been made for him last week by zoo visitors in a special workshop.

PARADE KICKOFF

In Miami Beach, Fla., elephants from the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus parade along Ocean Drive in a sneak peak performance for the opening of the circus. 

WILL BE CUTE FOR WATERMELON

A brown bear snacks on watermelon while cooling itself in a pool at the zoo in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. 

LITTLE GIANT

In the U.K. at the Chester Zoo, a baby giant anteater is the zoo's newest arrival. This adorable youngster was born on Sunday to mom Bliss. 

KOALA CUDDLE

There are three koala joeys in this picture! The trio are now of the age where they no longer need to have their mothers with them, and have moved in together to form a nursery group at the Taronga Zoo in Australia. So cute!

BONOBO BABY

Yasa the bonobo gave birth yesterday to an adorable little baby. The little one and its mother are doing well, and visitors at the Zoo Leipzig are now able to see the duo. 

THE YEAR OF THE SNAKE

LAY OFF THE FLIES

An African bullfrog is measured by a zookeeper at the Dresden Zoo in eastern Germany during an annual stocktaking. During the inventory, the animals are counted and placed on scales. 

OWL LOVE

At Zoo Atlanta, a milky eagle owl owlet hatched on December 24. It takes about 48 hours for the chick to completely make it out of the egg. So cute!

HOT BATH BABY

A Japanese macaque sits with its baby in a hot springs bath to keep warm from the cold weather at a zoo in the Everland Amusement Park in Yongin, South Korea. 

HEDGEHOG HELPER

In Indiana, at the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo, Aldo the hedgehog is the newest program animal. 

GREAT TRANSITIONS

Lily the baby elephant is having a nice integration into her herd at the Oregon Zoo. She will no longer need "viewing hours" with the herd. 

TAPIR BIRTHDAY

Ulan the Malayan tapir turned one yesterday! Little Ulan loves to swim with her mother in the exhibit's pool at the the Tampa Lowry Park Zoo in Florida.

SQUIRREL RESCUE

After a small grey squirrel became stranded in a pond in Watford, Hertfordshire, England, three fire engines arrived with a ladder to help save the rodent. The little squirrel managed to make its way up the ladder and onto dry land. 

PYGMY PLAYTIME

At the Tampa Lowry Park Zoo in Florida, Zola the pygmy hippo enjoys a nice, muddy playtime.

MARMOSET MAMA

At the Whipsnade Zoo in England, a silvery marmoset carries her baby as she looks through a window to check for food. 

STEP-BY-STEP

Strawberry poison dart frogs exhibit amazing behavior at the Smithsonian's National Park Zoo in Washington D.C. The mothers carry each of their tadpoles one-by-one up a tree to a pool of water in a bromeliad. Amazing!

SPRING IS NEAR

In Australia, at the Taronga Zoo, reticulate gila monsters are starting to show signs that hatchlings may be on the way. The lizards have been boring down into the soil, which is a common behavior shown previous to laying eggs. 

PELICAN PRETTIES

At the Tierpark Zoo in Berlin, two newborn pelican chicks are presented to the media. The babies were born this month and are currently being raised by hand. 

GOT MILK?

A sleepy and adorable female lion cub shows off a milk mustache after being bottle-fed at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, Nebraska.

A WALK IN THE AARDVARK PARK

At the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, Neb., a female aardvark calf is on display for all to see. You can help name her! Too cute.

BE MINE

At the zoo in Dortmund, western Germany, a young male red panda recently got matched with a new female partner. Here, they are pictured together sitting on a tree at their zoo enclosure.

HUNGRY AND HEALTHY

Beautiful panda cub Xiao Liwu munches on bamboo before a health examination at the San Diego Zoo. The health examination went very well. Little Xiao Liwu is happy and healthy!

PENGUIN POSES

At the Zoologischer Garten Zoo in Berlin, a jackass penguin poses for the camera in its enclosure. The endangered species inhabits in the wild on the coasts of southern Africa.

ADOPT ME, PLEASE?

At an event in Taipei, Taiwan, rescued stray dogs wait to find their forever homes. An animal protection group gathered with local celebrities to help raise awareness of adopting stray animals instead of purchasing them.

BEAUTIFUL BRAZILIAN BABY

Gorgeous Brazilian tapir, Celestynka, has some fun in his enclosure at Zoo Brno in the Czech Republic. He has grown quite a bit, and loves to run around and play in his snowy outdoor enclosure.

MUDDY BUT MARVELOUS

At the London Zoo, a muddy bullfrog is inspected during a photo call for a stock take. More than 17,500 animals were counted in the zoo's annual head count.

FOAL FROLICS

In Switzerland's Zoo Basel, the rarest animal at the zoo has given birth. A Somali wild ass foal was born on Dec. 27, 2012. The baby, named Jana, is noted by her keepers as being extraordinarily lively. She is gorgeous!
