Best Dogs for People with Allergies

the daily dish More on PawNation: Allergies, Dogs, Lifestyle, Puppies, Relationship
Do you really want a canine companion, but have a lifelong battle with allergies? You are not alone, according to SF Gate. Approximately 10 to 15 percent of Americans suffer from dog allergies.

Last July, PawNation reported that hypoallergenic dogs do not actually exist, although many breeders classify their canines as allergen-free. While there isn't a dog breed that is truly nonallergenic, there are several breeds that produce less dander and shed a minimal amount.

The following breeds are recommended for people with allergies:

- Bedlington Terrier
- Bichon Frisé
- Chinese Crested
- Irish Water Spaniel
- Kerry Blue Terrier
- Maltese
- Poodle (toy, miniature or standard)
- Portuguese Water Dog
- Schnauzer (miniature, standard or giant)
- Soft-coated Wheaten Terrier
- Xoloitzcuintli (Mexican Hairless)

If you are an allergy-sufferer and want to welcome any of these dogs into your family, be sure to spend some time with the breed before committing to one. It is important to see whether or not you are able to tolerate them and if they are indeed a good fit for your lifestyle.
