Man and His Bulldog Offer Hugs to Newtown Community

More on PawNation: Bulldogs, Dogs, Heart-Warming, Newtown, Sad
Like many members of the Newtown community, the tragic events that occurred at Sandyhook Elementary School on Friday, Dec. 14 left resident Michael Cragin feeling helpless and devastated. Wanting to do something, Cragin came up with an idea involving his best friend Truman, the English Bulldog. According to NBC News, Cragin and Truman parked their SUV at the local Dunkin' Donuts shop and posted a sign with the message: "My bulldog gives hugs."

Soon enough, families pulled into the parking lot and met Truman's dog hugs with open arms. "He wants to give them that hug and that seems to be what counts," said Cragin. "I hope I can make their day to some extent, that's all."

Cragin is a retired special education teacher and former volunteer firefighter that has lived in Newtown for 30 years. When he found out what had happened, he said, "I just was numb. The fact that so many children were impacted by this is beyond words for me ... I'm totally shaken by it. I can't watch the TV or anything so this is how I opted to take care of it."

Cragin and Truman have now given out more than 100 hugs to passersby. "It's the type of thing that people will for that brief second leave the nightmare behind, just to hug him, and that's what I was hoping on, because I don't know what else to do," he said.
