It's a Christmas Miracle! Man Reunited with Dog After Five Years

Christmas magic arrived a little early this year for a dog-lover in Indiana. According to the Daily Mail U.K., a man was reunited with his beloved Shih Tzu, Bandit, five years after the animal was stolen.

The last time the owner, only identified as Mike, saw Bandit was back in 2007. The dog broke out of the front yard and was snatched from the street by an unknown driver. After countless hours of searching, Mike tried to accept that he would never see Bandit again.

Luckily, Mike got an unexpected Christmas wish. Bandit was recently picked up as a stray not too far from his original home. The rough-looking dog was taken by New Castle Animal Control to their shelter, where he was eventually put on the euthanasia list. But fate intervened and Bandit was taken in by a rescue shelter named reTails.

Staff at the rescue believed that Bandit had already been scanned for a microchip when he arrived at animal control, but decided to double check. Good thing they did, because a quick look revealed a chip with contact information to Bandit's original owner, Mike.

The group then had the privilege of calling Mike and reuniting man with his best friend. Mike was understandably skeptical at first, but raced down to the shelter within ten minutes. When he arrived, Bandit and the rest of the staff were there waiting for the tearful reunion.
Mike scooped his little buddy into a big bear hug, starting to fill in all the time and cuddles lost between them.

I too would like an answer as to why animal control did not find the chip? Does anyone know what happened? I'm not trying to lay blame on anyone, I just want to find out where this all fell through. As a pet owner with chipped pets, I would like to think AC would at least scan for a chip. This dog would have been dead had it not been for the rescue that pulled him; he would have been dead despite having an owner willing to come get him. How many animals has this happened to that didn't get rescued by a rescue group? I am already so paranoid when it comes to my animals, this is not helping my fears.

This is infuriating, why DIDN'T the animal control SCAN THIS PUP???? Why was this dog on the list to be murdered when no one even checked to see if he had a CHIP???? Why push the chips if the shelters REFUSE to scan why is that so hard? NO ONE EVER TRIES TO FIND THE PETS HOMES WHY??????? Pets 911 and all those other organizations have no interest in finding lost animals, so how can we expect the shelters to care. I keep hearing stories that they are giving animals away that belong to good homes, or putting them to sleep all because they are too lazy to scan them???? This is really disturbing.

Wow how did you get your kitty back? I have lost a couple of Cats but I got one back a couple of years ago because I was posting on CraigsList.org It was a miracle she was 3.5 miles from home in the desert in the middle of farms. I am so glad to hear you got the Cat back did he remember you & home? My kitty sure did even after a few weeks. She made herself hoarse because if she would wake up & not see me she would go around the house looking for me & crying. After 2 days she lost he voice. We sure were glad to see her though.

I know the joy & happiness you both felt. I am not happy about what almost happened to his dog though..... Happy Holidays
