Although it seems unfair and outdated, breed-specific laws continue to exist in the United States and across the globe in an effort to reduce the number of dangerous dogs. The laws are extremely difficult and costly to enforce, but many communities continue to outlaw certain breeds they deem "threatening." Organizations such as the ASPCA and the Humane Society are completely against them, stating that there is no evidence that communities are safer because of these laws. Plus, the United States Centers for Disease Control attests that inaccurate dog-bite data makes it near impossible to identify specific breeds. Still, many breeds — particularly Pit Bulls and Fila Brasilieros — suffer from negative reputations. Here are 12 of the most commonly banned dog breeds in the world.
-
Breed: Fila Brasiliero
Why they made the list: Fila Brasilieros are extremely intelligent and athletic, but terribly aggressive and strong. They are banned in the U.K., Israel, Denmark, Norway, Malta and Cyprus.
-
Breed: Alaskan Malamutes
Why they made the list: Alaskan Malamutes can be trained, but they are not for just anyone. They are extremely active and demand a lot of exercise. Because they have a strong prey-drive, their instinct is to hunt down anything they feel endangered by. This can result in fatalities.
-
Breed: Doberman Pinscher
Why they made the list: In a recent study, conducted to determine whether there are breed differences in aggression, the Doberman Pinscher ranked relatively high on stranger-directed aggression. Their aggressive behavior was displayed depending on each situation, but overall, their size and strength makes them a potentially dangerous dog breed.
-
Breed: Czechoslovakian Wolfdog
Why they made the list: The Czechoslovakian Wolfdog is quick, energetic and extremely fearless. They have a very high prey drive and are extremely unpredictable. They do not make for good household pets and should be kept far from children.
-
Breed: Neapolitan Mastiff
Why they made the list: Although many people do not associate Neapolitan Mastiffs with dangerous dogs, they are illegal to own in Singapore. In order to own one in Romania, one must pass a psychological evaluation. The 200-lb. dog can be dangerous when fully grown and should not be around children.
-
Breed: Presa Canario
Why they made the list: In 2001, a 33-year-old woman was killed by two Presa Canario-Mastiff mixes. In 2006, a 30-year-old woman was killed by her own Presa Canaria. Last August, a woman was killed by several dogs in Georgia, two of which were Presas. They are prohibited in Australia and New Zealand.
-
Breed: Pit Bulls
Why they made the list: Allegedly, several studies conducted have resulted in evidence indicating that Pit Bulls are responsible for many human attacks. One study concluded that Pit Bulls were responsible for 42–45% of dog attacks, with children being the victim 70% of the time. Pit Bulls are restricted widely around the world, from Miami to the entire U.K.
-
Breed: Tosa Ken
Why they made the list: The Tosa can weigh up to 200 pounds and can reach up to 32 inches in height. Because of its size and stature, they have been banned from the United Kingdom, Trinidad & Tobago, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Cyprus, Malta, Turkey, New Zealand and Malaysia.
-
Breed: Perro de Presa Mallorquin
Why they made the list: Like their cousin the Perro de Presa Canario, Perro de Presa Mallorquins are extremely intelligent and powerful dogs. They are not easy to handle and were bred to be fighting dogs. They can stand up to almost any challenge and if they are not taught to be obedient, they can become extremely dangerous creatures.
-
Breed: American Bulldog
Why they made the list: These strong-willed canines are banned in Denmark and Singapore. In 2009, a five-year-old girl was severely mauled by an American Bulldog. In 2011, one was killed after attacking children on a school bus.
-
Breed: Rottweiler
Why they made the list: Rottweilers are very self-confident dogs that a strong will to guard their owners. They are an extremely powerful breed that can sometimes act dangerously. In 2011, four of thirty-three recorded dog attack fatalities were caused by Rottweilers. They are banned in Poland, Romania, Portugal and Ireland.

I would just like to sound off with a PITBULLS are not a breed people. Most people mistake breeds of dogs all the time. I have worked in Animal Control in 2 different states and both places people mistake many breeds as Pitbulls. I have personally witnessed similar breeds to the " Pitbulls" that were a cause of injury or destruction. In multiple instances it was a black lab. Many people see a stocky, muscular, large headed dog automatically its a "Pitbull". So the category is banned. Which is not fair at all. That's playing a race card or discriminating against a name.

BIG DIFFERENCE. ie Border Collies would not entertain any idea of biting a human. Their whole psyche has been molded thru SELECTION of breeding partners to herd sheep, period. Yes, they can do agility but NOT protection work.

Most of you have LIMITED experience & are NOT professionals so are only giving opinions. Most pure breds are NOT well bred. A Registration is only a birth certificate & NO sign of careful selection, knowledged of the breed blueprint or dedication to breeding correct dogs. The BIG probs with PBs are : their reproduction is NOT in the hands of those with knowledge of correct dog BREEDING & 2) they don't just BITE... & let go. THEY SAVAGE : KILL & MAIM. Not 1 million PBs are worth the horrible death of their owner or having the feet chewed off of an innocent jogger. The dog scene in the US is a shambles. Americans are grosely unsophisticated about dogs. Spend a month in Germany & you will see real dog breeding, real dog people, proper facilities & responsible attitudes.

It really annoys me when people say these dogs are dangerous because there not its there owners. Any dog can be dangerous like a border collie or a jack Russell. So don't just blame it on the strong dogs. And I would advise a to have any of tho dogs !
March 27 2013 at 4:32 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIve raised american bullies for 13 yrs with my kids , grandkids, and other various ages of peopl and have never had a dog bite/attack. March 12 2013 at 11:59 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI live with Presa Canarios. I have all my life. If you raise them from puppies, they are softies with a jumpy attitude. Even if they are adults, they are still big bundles of love. If you are looking for one, try Petfinder as your first resort. I recommend a male that is Spayed, Neutered and Possibly has ears cropped WELL. Emphasis on well. My Male Presa has stubs for ears because of the crappy job someone in the city did for me. I recommend a young dog because the only live 10-12 years.
March 05 2013 at 8:17 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyInteresting to see the unexpected Bloodhound listed. Funnily enough, I've had nine dogs, and known/spent a lot of time around hundreds of them. The most aggressive of mine were the Maltese (she would have had to be kept in solitary confinement if she were any larger), and the Bloodhound (adopted after he retired as a police drug dog, and he had always been the alpha dog of his kennel...so he was very assertive. Bit my little brother the first day day we got him for petting his back while he was burying a bone. Sometimes he'd growl at you if you came and petted him when he just wanted to lie around and be left alone.) Other than that...well, I was nipped by a friend's German Shepherd once. My mom also knew a couple of highly aggressive Shepherds.
March 04 2013 at 6:15 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyBut me? I love and respect all dogs, of all breeds. They ALL have the capacity to be aggressive, to protect and defend themselves, their family, or their property from perceived threats...and they all have the capacity to be sweet, loving, caring, well-mannered friends. I'm no more prejudiced against American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, or ANY of the various "Pit Bull," Molosser, and other most commonly banned or restricted breeds than I am against...well, Maltese. :P BSL is BS; ban deeds, not breeds.
Hi just sounding off on behalf of the Pitbull best type of dog ever. It breaks my heart to think that a Pitbull wound ever harm someone. You show me a Pitbull that bite someone and I'll show you a a million pitbulls that would rather kiss you than hurt you... Thanks Pitbull lover forever!!!
